Our Kitchen Project: (Just Completed) My wife and I had been wanting to have our kitchen remodeled for several months. When it finally came time to do it, we started going through the process of trying to find the right contractor for the project. We spent several weeks researching until we came across Yorklyn Construction. Once we met Ben, we felt like the search was over. The advice, detailed thought he put into our plans brought a sense of comfort to us. The quotes were fair and where we hoped they would be. Starting with Ben, our experience fanned out to the rest of folks working for Yorklyn. Tom, who managed our project, was absolutely in touch with our thoughts as the project transitioned from demo to the "rebuild". He did a better job of "detail nitpicking" than I could have. From the beginning they stated it clearly, "we want it done right for you." They certainly lived up to that and exceeded it. The carpentry work with the cabinets they constructed all the way down to the floor thresholds / transitions were perfect, and I mean perfect. I'm sure a lot of contractors hold similar standards, but where Yorklyn pulls ahead is with how they treat your property, residence and your family. You become a bit more than a customer. To Whom This May Concern: Typically, we are not people that post reviews. Oh, if we really don't like something we have been known to speak up directly to the company. We have to have very strong feelings to post in a public forum. After all, saying something about a person's lively hood should not be taken lightly. Often people are quick to criticize and slow to praise. We would like to change that. We have a house that was in need of updates and repairs. We also where in desperate need of storage. We invited several companies to come by and tell us what they thought and to give us a bid. Two companies that came by and told us the project was too big for them and no bid the project. Finally, it came down to two companies from the area, Yorklyn Construction being one. Yorklyn shot straight with us. They told us the truth, not what they thought we wanted to hear. The bids came in pretty close but Yorklyn impressed us with their candor and professionalism which gave us confidence that once they agreed to something they would meet their commitments. We were told that the process would be long (several months) and that we would basically be living in a construction site. Like I stated, they shot straight with us and it was a big project. Side note, they did everything they could to minimize any discomfort and were respectful that this was our home. We did have hiccup's but Yorklyn's staff and the sub-contractors where great. In a project this size there are hundreds of small decisions, but I can honestly say that everyone involved looked out for our best interests. If they thought we were making a wrong choice, they spoke up. For example, we chose the color of grout for the shower in a showroom. The tile guy put in the tile but thought we made a mistake with the color of the grout. He didn't just go and let us make a mistake. Instead he spoke up and brought it to our attention. He and the project manager discussed it with us and made suggestions that we elected to follow and are happier for that decision. We had a similar experience with their painter. Trust me things look different in a sample catalog or a showroom than in your house. I also wanted to say that their carpenters are great and their cabinet guy is amazing, very skilled and exact, a true craftsman. Our cabinets are just wonderful. We can also tell you that on the rare occasion that we did express displeasure, they made it right and when a problem was our fault, they were fair. Several of the Yorklyn staff and sub-contractors feel like friends. We have very warm feelings for these people. We have grown to trust them. Not only would we recommend them, we will call upon them in the future when we need skilled professional trades people. Often in business "quality "is defined as meeting or exceeding a customer's expectations, in our book, Yorklyn's work and the people that make up this company are the definition of quality. When it came to picking a contractor my arms were in the air as I didn't have a clue. I looked online and in the phone book and saw Yorklyn I I at least know that I had heard of them and they are still in business so I gave them a call and set up an appointment for a salesman to come to our home. The salesman was very friendly, well spoken, and addressed our job very well. We got an estimate in the mail for siding and replacing the flooring material on three porches with a composite board that I knew was going to be expensive but I'm done painting them. The siding was a two story job to protect 114 yr old brick that back that many years ago weren't fired hot enough and were starting to crumble a bit from moist weather. We signed on and they started a 2-3 weeks later and were here for a 2-3 weeks. They did a decent job but there were a few things that they didn't understand what we wanted and I called and talked to the owner and he was very responsive, came out and looked at the issues, and had everything taken care of within a few days. I'd rate them at 4.5 stars if I could. Everyone that worked here was nice and friendly, no attitudes, and quality work. read more

Yorklyn Construction Company Inc. Summary: May 2010 my house was damaged by hail. October 2010 I started to look for a company to make the repairs. On December 29th and 30th Yorklyn Construction Company Inc., replaced the roof, siding and everything in between. I am very happy that I choose Yorklyn Construction Company Inc. I feel that I received quality material, installed by quality people at a reasonable price. Detail: First I would like to acknowledge that before this I had no prior knowledge of Yorklyn Construction Co. or any of the people who works there. I also must say that I know that I am a very picky / particular person and I know that Donald Carr (President of Yorklyn) will smile that little smile of his when he reads this. I started by looking in the Yellow Book selecting 6 or 7 firms. My preference was to find one that had a local office so that if I needed too, I could camp on their door steps. Next I would show up out of the blue at their office too see what their organization was like. At most, as soon as I walked through the door they were on me like stink on a skunk asking personal information doing the hard sale. When I entered Yorklyn that did not happen, I walked around looking at displays when I had a question I walked over to a counter and a lady (now known too me as Patty (office manager)) promptly appeared and started to answer them. As I told her what I wanted she gave the brochures I would need to review and explained each to me. One of which was very beneficial in helping me find the product I needed to do what I wanted to do. Next I had Donald Carr (I call him Don now) and the others contractors come to our house to go over the insurance estimate and see the house. I gave each a copy of the insurance estimate. Out of that some just said that they would do if for the amount on the estimate but would not put anything on paper. Others were not experienced or even heard of the insulated vinyl siding I decided I wanted to put on. Don submitted his estimate which I then rewrote in another format with the detail I wanted, and then submitted that to my two top choices. The other company lost favor when they were huffy about me asking question like what if I went with this choice or changed to that, saying they would not keep rewriting the estimate (even though they only wrote one). Don on the other hand keep working with me giving me rough ideas as to what the changes I talked about would cost and we ended up with the estimate I wanted with the detail of the material to be used. At that point it was a no brainier and I signed with Yorklyn. This is to show why you should be there when the work is being done. As they were starting to put up siding I noticed that they were putting "J" channel (track to stick siding into) up next to the windows. I ask if they needed to do that when the windows were to be boxed in, that's where 2 in wood topped with flashing is put around the window to add to its appearance, they replied that their work order from the contract did not have that. So I got a copy of my contract and even though Don and I had talked extensively about it, it in fact did not make it onto the final contract that I signed. I had missed it, so I was sweating bullets thinking what a blunder I had made but they called Don and he said yes it was suppose to have been in the contract, so they then called their dispatcher and had the additional material delivered and the windows were boxed, problem solved. Through all of this, all the people working there were always very polite, very industrious and even though I am hard of hearing I could easily understand everyone. Some other things I really like about Yorklyn and Don, before the install, Don called to keep me informed as to what was going on and during the renovating its self, Don stopped by once or twice each day to check with me to see how it was going and to work through any problems or questions. Finally the cooperation did not stop when they had the check in their pockets. Week or so after they were done I stopped in to return siding samples and had voiced a concern (minor one) I had with Patty, later when I stopped in again to see Patty for copies of all the material guarantees, Don and the subcontractor who did the work were there and said they had some solutions to run past me. Last note: after I had signed, a neighbor asked me who he should look at and I told him to contact Yorklyn. He did and he too signed and even though he was not eyes on during the work like I was, he told me that he too was happy with the service and the work they did. We had a front porch added on to our house a few years ago. We went with Yorklyn because they seemed to be well known in the area. I was unimpressed with the people we worked with and their arrogance and dismissiveness of our concerns. I have two major concerns with their work. One, they actually made the steps going on to the porch two different heights. So the first step is huge, and the second is super small. To me, that doesn't make sense. Secondly, because they did not put breakers in when pouring the concrete, which would allow them to control where it might crack, we now have a giant crack down the center of our porch. When we tried to discuss this with them, they first dodged a number of phone calls and then tried to tell us that "concrete cracks, that's just the way it is." Well I'm sorry, but cracking less than a month after completion, when it could have been prevented is unacceptable to me. We had to harrass them to send someone out to fix it. They came and did half the job, and it now looks worse than when they started. I will never again have any work done by this company. read more
