After a late lunch at the Tin Goose diner, came over to this very nice aviation+ museum. First, you can tell by the ladies working the front desk - admission, you're in a great place, when you comment you don't have your readers with you and it'll be difficult to read the information at the exhibits. Without missing a beat, Valerie offers her pair. Her only request is that I return them when I leave. . So very kind of her. We pay the admission, and begin the tour. There was a lot to see and I would definitely give yourself at least 90 minutes to see both areas. There is a hangar also to see the bigger planes. There were many nice tributes, and we got a kick out of the Hogan's Heroes memorabilia. The vintage cars were a bonus. I can't wait to tell my dad he needs to take a drive here just for the classic cars! I think one of the first cars he drove was the '57 bel aire convertible. The yellow one here is in pristine condition. Also loved the vintage Bob's Big Boy side of window drive up sign. Classic! The attention to detail and restoration is truly a labor of love for many of the items here. In the hangar, there were quite a few volunteers. They were busy getting things ready for Father's Day weekend! The ford two motor plane will be taking passengers for a nostalgic ride. This museum is an amazing tribute to the put in bay, Lake Erie aviators. There is also war memorabilia! The investment that continues in this amazing museum and the diner attached is remarkable. I'll be telling my aviation, car enthusiast friends and people looking for something neat to do to come by, enjoy and donate to help these pieces of history to continue to be available for generations to come! A small but simply amazing aviation museum! Other reviews have done a wonderful job of describing the planes and items on exhibit and they have done a wonderful job. The people who volunteer and work here IMHO are what makes this a simply amazing museum. From the fine people that greet you and buy tickets from and work the gift shop. The fine folks working and restoring tanks and finding the time to inform and answer questions. When I apologize when noticing it was minutes from closing time, instead of being rushed out the door I was given a "behind the ropes" tour of planes that included getting up close and personal with the most impeccably restored B-25 I've seen. To our surprise our guide turned out to be the Director of Operations for the museum. His unassuming nature and will to give this history teacher a tour well past closing time speaks volumes of his love and dedication to both the museum and its visitors. One of the best museums I've been to and would encourage a visit. read more

Great museum. Wonderful exhibits, actual planes, jeeps, boats, a tank in two hangers from World War II, vintage cars, and lots of memorabilia, including some from Hogan's heroes and the squad car from the Andy Griffith show. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The pictures online don't do it justice. We did not realize it was so big. It did not look that big on their website. I remember when these folks were raising money to build a museum, and I'm glad they've succeeded. I stopped by on a road trip; made sure my route passed this. There are two hangars, with a fair walk between them so plan ahead depending on weather and who is in your group. The entrance and gift shop are small, then you head into a medium-sized room with artifacts and displays on local aviation history, focused on Island Airlines and its Trimotors. The small hangar through the doors only had a couple of planes in it when I visited, a T-6 and a Cub, but I'm guessing there are sometimes more in there. Both were beautifully restored, and accompanied by cars from similar eras: an old Chrysler and an MG-TC. The main event is in the big hangar out back: two Trimotors being restored, a B-25, an Avenger, a Culver Dart (built in Columbus,) and many aviation artifacts. Plus, inside and out there are assorted military vehicles, and a PT boat. So, yeah, a wide variety of exhibits. Lots of things, and the museum itself, seem to be works in progress. Give them a few years- most everything is done by volunteers. Well worth a visit, and a detour if you're anywhere nearby. Check the website for events, rides, etc. Why not 5 stars? Well, I had hoped they had a flying Trimotor, and more planes in general. Jeeps and motorcycles are cool too, but not the main draw, for me anyway, at an aviation museum. Oh, and there's a little cafe/diner. I wasn't hungry, but the menu has some interesting stuff on it and it smelled good. Homemade pies in a case by the door. read more

Fine, local aviation museum, specifically World War II aviation and related militariana. Beautiful building, just east of the local airport, still a bit empty but worth a visit if you're heading to the islands. There are really four segments of the building: a nice entry hall with seating, restrooms and "donation" visitor welcome desk; a gift shop; a display case room; and the hanger, which was open to the tarmac when I visited. Won't take more than an hour, if you pore over EVERY little thing. (If you want a real, chock-a-block aviation experience, the National Museum of USAF at Wright-Patterson in Dayton is perhaps the best on earth, and hey, whattayaknow, ALSO in Ohio.) I'd love to be there during an air show, when all the old flying leather-heads come out to play. They are in the process of restoring a Ford TriMotor "Tin Goose" plane that was part of the old Island Airlines, ferrying folk and freight over to the islands. Also on display was a sweet Tuskegee Airmen P-51 "By ReQuest", a B25J Mitchell bomber, a quirky and I'll bet unreliable BMW-inspired Ural motorcycle with sidecar, military ambulance, a surprising array of German military gear, but not a whole lot else. It's a pretty small building. The suggested donation is five bucks, kids are free, so I think you get about five bucks worth of interesting artifacts, probably more if you actually fought in dubbya dubbya two, the fightin' war, the Big One. (Yeah, I'm old. I'm not, however, THAT old.) I hope they'll eventually have a bit more information displayed next to each item, as I really had to dig just to find the few things I've identified above. Kinda looks like your uncle's garage, if he was really, really wealthy and way into WWII air warfare. And if he is, can we go visit him? A neat trip with friends or family, the Liberty Aviation Museum offers a bit of variety compared to other activities in the area. The Museum is located at the main hanger of the airport and neatly enough, is designed as if it were a 1930's terminal. It offers a wide variety of memorabilia from local hero's as well as several WWII era motorcycles, trucks, cars and planes. The weekend we went there, they were offering flights on one of the 8 surviving 1920's Ford Tri-Motor planes. In addition to the new museum and terminal, there is also a new old school dinner and plans to build a WWII boat museum in another hanger just near. I will definitely be coming back for that! A word of advice, the museum and airport have many events during the summer. Check out the calendar and plan on crossing a few things off the bucket list at one time! read more

Such a great museum. Just opened last year, every time I come back they have added so much to it. Lots to look at. Great place to stop by and check out while you're up in the islands. The staff is friendly, but the museum is small. It contained only a few airplanes! They also have a diner, but I did not eat there.

A hidden gem! Really, such a fun time. We were driving I 80 from Chicago back to NY and when googling things to do along I 80 the liberty aviation museum came up. Myself and wife and our year and a half old child had such a nice time there. There are many old planes and restorations going on. The theme of the museum really does take you back in time, very well done and classy. Then when you are finished with the museum there is diner attached which has great food and one of the best milkshakes I have ever had. Definitely would recommend anyone traveling I 80 to take this detour and check this place out. read more

We took a day trip from Toledo to Port Clinton this past weekend to visit The Liberty Aviation Museum that had been featured on WNWO tv 24. When we had completed checking out the museum, we went to The Tin Goose Diner, which is inside the main hangar. The diner was clean and well lit, and moderately busy for late afternoon. I ordered the GEE BEE,a very generous portion of house made chicken salad, with lettuce and tomato on a fresh and flaky croissant with potato chips and bread and butter pickle chips . We also got a side of Tin Goose Eggs, which are beer battered Wisconsin cheddar cheese bites with a side of marinara sauce. My teen didn't want to eat anything, so he had a Vanilla Milkshake. When the waitress brought it to the table and left the silver mix cup on the table he didn't know why, being from the generation that gets all their drinks from a paper carry out cup or plastic bottle. All in all, it was an enjoyable and memorable afternoon. If ever you are in our neck of the woods, be sure to visit The National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio. read more
