Unassuming burger joint hidden behind another building. We found ourselves there pass from corpus to Laredo. To my surprise the food was exceptionally cheap compared to what I've seen i'm most cities. But more surprising than that... the shear quantity and quality. You don't have many choices to eat in Freer, so it is fortunate that the town sports one of the great, locally owned cafes in Texas. "Ya Ya's" homestyle burgers is one great burgers as are the fresh peeled and sliced fries (ask for them instead of the frozen fries). That is what I get every visit on my way to Houston or Laredo. You know it's a really good burger if you find yourself thinking about later in the day... Me and some 8 guys were in a caravan heading south from Round Rock for a retreat on a Friday and suddenly hunger struck! I scanned google maps for food and spotted the Liberty Cafe in Freer. "Hmmph," I said, "Looks pretty good." Trusting my instincts, we decided to try it. Actually drove past it once! It's not on the main drag in Freer and its tucked back off the secondary road. Hard to spot? Maybe. But the building looked decent with some respectable curb appeal so we pulled over and stepped inside. We were greeted right away and seated by a very friendly face. The place felt very clean. (It's worth noting the bathrooms were clean and up-to-date.) The menu had lots of options for Tex-mex and American food plus there was a beef ribs special that day. I just asked the lady for a recommendation and w/o hesitation she suggested the burgers. This is when it got cute... She said, "We have two kinds of burgers; regular and 'homemade.'" I asked the difference and she said, "The regular is like what you get everywhere and the homemade we make here. We hand pat the meat and season it ourselves." No contest! I'll take homemade! I ordered a single homemade cheese burger and my friend next me got the double. She said, "Do you want fries? We have two kinds, 'regular' and 'homemade.' Regular are like frozen fries you can get anywhere and 'homemade' we cut a potato ourselves, season and fry it." Well guess which one I picked! The burgers were off the charts good! My friends double was massive! (But he's a big boy, he took it. It had to 3/4 of a lb at least!) My single was thick (1/3 lb maybe) and cooked just right; seared and soft in the middle. The bun and toppings were both fresh. I enjoyed every bite and there was nothing left. I think the soda was from a can not a fountain, I don't recall. Others in my group got the special which they liked, but didn't love. Another guy got ground meat tacos in soft corn tortillas and he was licking his fingers. They offer a good salsa with chips on the table when you sit down too. The bill was a fair price--we were all satisfied! We agreed this is definitely a stop we'll be making again! Very welcoming atmosphere and staff was very friendly and always around when we needed something. The salad bar was small and simple but it had all the ingredients I like on my salad so I was satisfied. My husband ordered the Carl Walker and said he would have never thought those flavor a would go together but they were really good. I ordered a homemade burger and it was amazing. I am a big burger fan and not many impress me but this was delicious. I only ate about 3/4 of my burger but trust me, if it would have fit, I would have eaten it. This place is awesome! I drove through Freer all the time in college and I never new about this place. It's definitely going to become a must stop every time I drive through! The restaurant is very clean, the wait staff is very attentive, and the overall ambience is very family oriented. I had the Liberty Homemade Burger with cheese. It is seriously unreal... I made the glorious mistake of asking for double meat. They brought a delicious heap of hamburger with cheese, mushrooms, and bacon. The patties were so big I had to remove one and eat it separately. The fries were hot and made to order. The burger patties are fresh and made in-house. Best of all, the prices are very reasonable. Overall great place! Homemade burgers here are a must! read more

My wife and son stopped here for lunch while passing through. It is a nicely furnished restaurant with a small town atmosphere. We split a large Mexican platter. It was excellent Tex-Mex! Came by to try the famous burger everyone was praising. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't worth the hour drive from Laredo. I had the liberty homemade burger with grilled onions cheese and mustard and homemade fries. Again it wasn't bad but honestly dairy queen across the street had more flavor. I was expecting a certain kind of seasoning that just stood out and made it be known hey you can only get this here. Same with the homemade fries. For my taste buds they had no flavor at all. My kids had a mixed chicken and beef fajita... not what I expect... rice and beans had a sour taste but they didn't taste like they were bad or anything probably just the flavor. My husband had the chicken fried steak was normal tasting for that. With the chicken fried steak and the burger there is definitely plenty in portion side. They also serve complimentary chips and salsa... I love hot... this stuff is hotttt. And the tea tasted instant ... I don't care for instant... I would come back if I was already in Freer but I would not make a special trip. And I would probably go to Dairy Queen first . The service though was very good.
