A New York State Trooper quickly responded and called for a tow truck, as the truck was obstructing traffic. Sam's Towing and Recovery responded and towed the truck with the tow dolly attached 7/10ths of a mile to their yard. They first attempted to charge me $356 (cash only), but after I complained to a New York State Police supervisor, they dropped it down to $324 (cash only). I find it outrageous that a tow truck company which is part of the New York State Police's Rotation Tow Program is allowed to rip off people who have the misfortune to break down on Route 17 in Sullivan County.

My car broke down on Route 17 earlier this week and the State Trooper who responded to my call for assistance called Sam's to tow me to their garage. The distance of the tow was a little more than a mile, but these thieves charged me $378! They would not take credit cards and demanded cash. They wouldn't even drive me the 1 mile round trip to the Bank of America ATM to get cash... I had to walk. Needless to say, I wouldn't let them work on my car (As it turns out, the problem was a bad fuel pump). Instead, I had it towed to Rea Ford's Service Department in Monticello, who sent a tow truck from Monticello to Liberty to pick the car up. How much did the 10 mile tow truck trip from Liberty to Monticello cost me? $150! Avoid Sam's Towing and Recovery/Sam's Service Station at all costs!

I would give them 10 stars if I could. Here's the story. At noon on Memorial Day I checked out of…read morewhere I was staying about 5 miles from Livingston Manor, and my car made it less than a mile before it died with the battery light on on the dash. I figured the battery was dead, called AAA, the tow truck guy came and said the alternator was not working at all. Although AAA had told me the nearest AAA approved garage was 40 miles away, the tow guy said that's ridiculous, Manor Motors if 5 miles away and is very good. We called Manor Motors, but there was no answer -- closed for Memorial Day. Google said they open at 7AM on weekdays, so after 6AM the next day I called every 15 minutes, and at 6:45 Cory, one of the two brothers who own it, picked up. I was desperate to get home that day, and I knew it would take time to get the right alternator and then a lot of time to install it. My car is a Lexus, and book time for the installation is 5 hours because there is a lot of disassembly required to get at the alternator. (On my Camry 4 cylinder it barely takes me a half hour to replace it). Cory said sure, have it towed in and I'll do what I can to get it done today, no guarantees. AAA came in under 15 minutes, by 7:40 Manor Motors confirmed it needed a new alternator. I left the car and walked into town for a coffee, when I came back around 8:45 the car was in a bay already partly taken apart. By 1:45 I was on the road on my way home (about a 6 hour highway drive away). The price was less than I would have paid at home for the repair. The best part was throughout everyone was friendly, nice, supportive, warm. It's funny -- the waiting room (which was very comfortable) looked like a movie set for a 1950's garage (pictures below), and the whole atmosphere of competence, honesty, trustworthiness also felt like it was the 1950's. It was like I had landed in Mayberry. Below are pictures of signs in the waiting room (really comfy worn leather chairs and wi-fi, too!) and one of the old cars (Christine?) in the back.

Their work is exceptional, they are kind, courteous and communicate really well. I was surprised to see that they even detailed the interior of my 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander after doing the body work required from a rear end collision. Their prices are reasonable. I expect to be a happy long term customer. Thanks Manor Motors!

Anytime I called for a tow, Angel's prices have always beaten anyone else's. Sometimes by a lot. Most places charge a minimum of $200 these days regardless of how close you need them to go. I've never known Angel not to give you the price before he goes to pick it up so don't say yes and argue later. Perhaps if you know you don't have the money right then he could work with you but don't be a jerk and then expect favors. My experience has always been fair, pleasant, professional, and quick. If you read the Google reviews that has been everyone else's experience too. It just makes me so mad when entitled people who don't get their way and don't get over on someone then go on a review platform to bash a business or a person's name. I work in the restaurant/hospitality industry so I see things like that all too often and it just annoys me. If you want the truth read the Google reviews. The fairest prices, fast service, follow through with photos when job is finished. As long as you act like a normal human being, pay for the service like you're supposed to then you won't have any issues
