Prior to signing off on this quote I question that someone should come back to assess the estimate again and I was told that it would not be necessary. Thereafter, I signed off on the contract for the quoted price of $3,850.00. There was concrete that had to be broken up to have the shower installed which was done. Digging started and my wife was informed that they had to build a wall. I was not home at the time this wall issue was addressed. My wife called me and informed me of the wall that was needed. I gave the ok to let them add a wall. Later that evening I was shocked to hear that a 5' wall was an extra $400 that was not in the original quote. Donnie stated that he didn't realize that there was no wall present when he did the estimate. Had the work not started I would have cancelled the work because the price was not what was agreed on. This was very disappointing to see the price increase this dramatically. I arrived home after work, and I was shocked to see that the wall for the shower was actually in the doorway. Now the bathroom entry door only opens half way so we have to enter sideway. Towards the end of the job Donnie stated that they could install another door to open outward or move the doorway. I did not agree to the additional work because the extra charge for the wall was snuck in. The shower was installed and works fine. The job is now complete and I was informed that I would not be charged for the toilet valve that they broke. In my opinion this obligation was not met, and under duress I paid the extra $400.

TLDR: Charged us $550 to replace a single circuit breaker. Would never use them again…read more Contacted Unity Power Services (UPS) a few months back to have them install runs for a tankless water heater. Also had them re-run a 60A circuit from a not-used hot tub to a junction box under the house to prepare for a future relocation of the kitchen. Work was done well and priced fairly. A few days ago we switched from propane to a new induction stove and needed a 50A circuit for the new stove. I reached back out to UPS based on past performance and cost. Full Disclosure: Our mistake was not asking for a written estimate before agreeing to the work. We are honest people and based on the previous experience with them we didn't feel the need. We we contacted them we told them they could just move the 60A circuit from the junction box back a few feet and wire it into the stove. After that call we moved the existing propane stove out to make it easier for them and ensure they didn't have to deal with the propane part at all. Upon doing that we found a previous installation of a 60A circuit already in place. As a result, all that ended up being required was a swap out of a 60A circuit breaker with a 50A breaker, connect the 4 wires from the new plug into the new stove, plug it in, test it, and be done. All of that was done by UPS and the stove is working. In addition, when they went into the crawl space they noticed the existing wiring was hanging down so they stapled it up to the floor joists as per code. The run is less than 20' so I'm guessing between 12-20 staples total. They also noted that the receptacle was oriented in the vertical position near the floor and needed to be horizontal to clear the space in the new stove so they turned it sideways. That is the extent of the work performed, replace a circuit breaker, turn a receptacle sideways, and staple about a dozen-ish times. Here's the thing, they sent 2 people out and it took them 2 1/2 to do this work. The bill was approx $550.00! How it took 2 professionals 2 1/2 hours to do that is beyond me. I've done a ton of my own work, even studied electrical in vocational school for couple of years. It's a 30-60 minute job for one person. As of today, 8/27/2024: One source states the average cost to replace a circuit breaker is $100-$260* Another local company offers a $69 special to replace a circuit breaker.** *According to home guide **Tristate Home Services We called them and politely conveyed that we believed the cost to be excessive and thought an adjustment was in order. We asked why it took 2 electricians ("we always send 2"). We asked for clarification on the length of time it took ("we had to figure out what was going on and then we didn't have a 50A breaker on the truck so we had to go back to our office to get one") They they pointed out that they didn't charge us for the trip back to get supplies they didn't have as though they were doing us a favor. Again, they knew the job was to create a 50A circuit but they didn't bring a 50A circuit breaker? We were then told "you have already paid". This was the most insulting as it insinuates "we have your money so we don't care". We were then told "I have 5 hours into this job so I don't see a need to do anything". Anyone can bill 5 hours. Just work slow. Not our issue his crew took a ridiculous amount of time to replace a circuit breaker. Or was it intentional? We will never know. We ended the conversation relaying to them that we aren't the kind of people to sue but that they had lost a customer and a reference and in fact quite the opposite. To add insult to injury, they took our perfectly fine 60A breaker without asking. When I brought that up they didn't have the decency to apologize and offer to return it. Unbeknowst to them however is that we've decided to tear down the house and rebuild next spring. We were using these smaller projects to identify contractors that we will use for that build. And in this case, weed out ones like UPS. I would recommend not using this contractor. If you do, I hope our experience provides you with the information you need to not be taken advantage of as we feel we have been. Two stars because the work was actually done.
