I've been with Liberty Mutual for my auto insurance for probably 30+ years (with only one claim, I might add). Last week I rec'd a letter from LM stating they are done with CA. They encouraged me to embrace their partnering insurance company, Safeco (I distrusted the name immediately), who would be picking up my coverage in May after LM goes wherever they're going. (Hell comes to mind.) Then, a few days ago, I rec'd my new Safeco policy, which indicated my annual premium will *double*! (See? I told you the name sounded nefarious.) Turns out Safeco (which is still owned by LM) uses Companion, a so-called agency to provide its customers with brand new agents. (Again, the red flags flew high at hearing this unbeknownst-to-me company name!) Enter A.J. Franco (he insists on just "A.J."), who admittedly is just another grain of salt in the sea. A.J. confirmed my assertion that regardless of who owns whom, it's basically LM that approved Safeco's request to raise policyholders' premiums (up to but not to exceed a 65% increase!). Boy did I get lucky that my policy premium only went up 50 percent, right? A.J., who by no fault of his own is tangentially tied to LM via Safeco via Companion, certainly wasn't shocked at my disclosing dissatisfaction with how things have been handled. Long story short, I told Mr. Franco what I thought about LM's duplicitous "passing the buck" to a greedy, unappreciative insurance company like Safeco, and told him that as of May 20 (my expiration date), I'd be looking elsewhere for my auto insurance, as I cannot and will not support Safeco/LM in any way any longer. To his credit, Mr. Franco offered to help find me a lower-priced insurance policy carrier, which is basically what Companion does. Yet, of course, this means A.J. will be sleuthing through Companion's network of insurance companies, so by extension undoubtedly through Safeco/LM's approved network. I'm now being introduced to some company called Mercury (AGAIN, the name is ridiculously sinister), that, according to A.J., might be able to help me, though for the record, nothing was put in writing. (Shocking, right?) After I pulled myself from what felt almost assuredly like the turbulent spin cycle of a high-powered washing machine, I agreed to review any and all policy options (which I admit A.J. did provide in a timely manner). What's my point? (Yes, I have a point.) I guess I'm just looking for recommendations for a decent auto insurance policy provider, if one exists at all. I'd also welcome others to share their experiences with LM (or Safeco... or Companion... or even Mercury). As for companies like State Farm Insurance and Liberty Mutual, who I don't blame for wanting out of CA, I do blame them for clandestinely arranging for subsequent coverage that's indicative of highway robbery at best, should the company be trying to assist at all. This all said, do any of my fine CA neighbors have a recommendation? Is there even an insurance company left in CA that can deliver a fair policy? Over the years, I've checked with Liberty Mutual insurance for auto insurance quotes. They have never been less expensive than my current insurance. Upon receiving a flyer through my credit union, for less expensive car insurance, through Liberty Mutual, I decided to try again. This time, after giving the person all my information, including my vehicles, they tell me that one of my vehicles has a "branded title" (which means it shows as a "rebuilt" title or "salvaged" title). This is not true, and despite holding the paper title in-hand, that shows a clean and clear title, the person at Liberty Mutual dismissed me and declined to even offer a quote. After the phone call, I checked with my state's MVD, and that particular vehicle specifically shows "No liens", "No brands". Maybe Liberty Mutual is a good choice for some, but judging by their ratings, it doesn't appear they are doing so well. In my opinion, they are a waste of time and even when I've received quotes from them in the past, they have always been at least 50% higher in cost than my current insurance. read more

They bought State Auto and summarily cancelled my homeowner's insurance. No explanation. Just try to call them. You can't. Their robot phone is awful. The letter they send you has no useful information on it at all. After reading other reviews, I can see why. They're useless. Liberty Mutual sucks so bad! When I call I can't get through the first 3 times at least because their system doesn't recognize my phone number. The agent I complained to said "yeah it's been broken for months". I have multiple policies with them atm (not for long) and they literally have the wrong policies associated to the wrong properties on their app which caused them to duplicate a claim I made on one property to another. Did you know that insurance companies post claims to LexisNexis and guess what? They made me call them to correct the problem they created. I have tried more than 3 times to take a car and a property off my umbrella policy and they just keep losing the documents they are requesting. I have found that the more an insurance companies pays telling how great they are is inversely proportional to how good they actually are. I have been with Liberty Mutual since 2002 and I will not renew this year. This year I had my very first claim since owning various homes since 1984. More games. The fact that you don't have enough people to service your claims is your problem. This is a business arrangement. I pay a premium, and you cover it. They raised my homeowners by nearly $700 a year even before my claim. I am guessing they will either cancel me or raise my premium significantly for my modest claim this year. This was my first experience having Jewelry Insurance, and I am 100% positive it can not get ANY WORSE than this. Liberty Mutual Group has to be by far the worst and most unprofessional Insurance agency on the market. I am an artist with VERY valuable jewelry pieces, when I trusted Liberty Mutual Group to have insure my jewelry I had full faith in them doing so, until life happened and a chain and pendant was stolen from me. I was assigned an insurance claim agent by the name of Dena Neuman, and not only was she incredibly rude on the phone, but she was doing her very best to take as long as she possibly could to put my claim and questions on hold or not ever respond in total. When my jewelry was stollen, I did everything I was prompted to do to fulfill the claim procedure, send documents, make a police report, send receipts, send pictures, etc. I was then gave a specific amount of coverage that I was allowed to utilize and replace my stollen items, so I had a jeweler do so. The jeweler remade my pendant, and I added a chain to utilize the entire claim amount. So after the pendant was made, the receipts and invoice were sent off to Dena Neuman, and all of a sudden connection goes blank, no answer, no emails, no response for days. She then responds and asks for more paperwork from the jeweler that he sent, and I myself sent over MULTIPLE TIMES, I even went as far as faxing them physical papers. Than Ms. Neuman had a vacation planned, and she ordered for NO OTHER INSURANCE AGENT to handle or discuss my claim with me. So my jewelry and claim was stuck in limbo until she was finished having herself a ball in another country. (or probably just at a casino gambling away insurance claim money) I bugged the office so much while she was gone, that they finally emailed me back, but it was useless because they knew nothing about the claim and was pretty much copy pasting policy rules as responses. Dena Neuman finally came back from vacation, but I found out because I was calling them and asking for her multiple times, (she was back in office for days and didn't reach out to me by the way) we finally got the chance to talk on the phone. Let me tell you, the moment Ms. Neuman realized what customer she was on the phone with, her attitude flew through the roof, and her patience with the situation was lower than her grandmothers blood pressure. That's a bar. The conversation went completely one way, which was MY WAY, solely because I had all of my facts in order, I had every step on my end handled, and I even had HER MESSAGES WRITTEN BY HERSELF on hand ready to read back. The whole issue was she only advised the claim department to send an amount of $7,008.00 to go towards my replaced pendant and chain, but my policy limit was placed at $8,300.00, which I was told to utilize, BY HER SPECIFICALLY. that $7,008 didn't even cover the pendant alone, so for months my jeweler had my pendant and chain in his office with a payment that wasn't enough to even cover the entire bill. I had to fight with Dena Neuman, and plead with her to at least send the amount to cover the cost of just the pendant being made. It was like the claim money was coming out of her childs tuition money for college, she was trying her very best to only allow the claim department to send AS LITTLE MONEY as they could. Eventually I left her speechless in the back and forth because she realized I wasn't going to allow her to not honor what was promised to me as a valuable customer, I agreed to let the extra chain go, and miss out on the utilization of the FULL CLAIM amount promised, and just get the rest of the pendant price paid for. Ms. Neuman gave in and finally said, with the worst attitude possible; "So how much do you need to pay for the pendant?" .... I told her, and she replied.. "Okay I just put the order in, give it 2 days" AND JUST LIKE THAT MY PENDANT WAS PAID FOR. The entire problem was fixed after an argument, turned into discussion, turned into a step by step how to manual on how to honor your word, it was that simple. Ms. Neuman just refused to send in a request. If I had the patience to go through a law suit with these people I would, but honestly Im praying this extensive review stops all of their business, that would put my soul at ease. The reason people insure their belongings, whether that be a house, a car, some jewelry, or life insurance, the whole point is to be able to feel protected and taken care of when SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS AND A CLAIM IS MADE. This issue with Liberty Mutual Group showed me, that they only value the customers policy price being paid for, not the actual customer or their business. Lastly, as soon as my claim was made, they dropped me as a customer and refused to insure with me at all. Nobody should ever in life trust this company, and anyone that knows Dena Neuman, should make sure they keep all petty cash and valuable items out of her reach, she probably steals and helps you search for what's missing. read more

They are so friendly and helpful, they handle claims extremely quickly, they communicate well with their customers, and make you feel valued. I changed to them from another insurance company a couple years ago and saved me over $1000 a year. Their website is set up great and very easy to use, I can make any changes that I need to without even having to call my agent. I would highly recommend them!! read more

Do not be surprised at the low reviews. This company simply doesn't care about its policyholders. With a car claim, we got months of runaround, after which they finally agreed with our position. When we redid our house (new roof, cement siding, etc.) they told us it had the same fire risk as before (huh?) and wouldn't reduce the rate. Then recently we received a letter out of nowhere cancelling our homeowners policy because of "poor accessibility for firefighting" and wildfire risk, even though we've been insured at this address for 20 years and are on a public street! I've been a customer of Liberty Mutual for 14 years for both auto insurance (two cars) and homeowners insurance. I was recently advised that they are not renewing my homeowners insurance due to concerns about brush in the neighborhood. I have never failed a brush inspection that is performed yearly by the Oakland Fire Department, and we pay thousands of dollars each year to keep our trees and landscaping trimmed. The claim services are horrible. I was not able to get hold with anyone about the claims for more than 2 days. I tried calling the service line, the claim center and the agent direct line. I tried the emails and the live chat but not able to talk to anyone as well. I asked for assistant from Progressive and they transferred me to the claim department but it was on hold for 5 hours and still no remaining on the line without anyone answering it. After 2 weeks of the claim, I am still not able to get hold with anyone from Liberty Mutual to provide the requested documentation. I would not recommend using Liberty Mutual. read more

I am extremely dissatisfied with my experience regarding claim#705576520 with Liberty Mutual Insurance. Poor customer service with dishonest and rude insurance agents! My ongoing claim process currently has taken over 4 weeks, and I still can't get a resolution! Their driver was cited for a driving violation, making an illegal turn, and my vehicle was left in an non-operational condition. Liberty Mutual claims that through their "assessment" of the facts they are only liable for 85% of the accident. However an Officer made a statement on the Police Report stating he knew there was no way I could have stopped in time. Not to mention my first adjuster guaranteed coverage of my rental costs, and now the second agent is claiming to only be able to pay 85%. If you are ever left dealing with Liberty Mutual Insurance I suggest saving the time and hassle and hiring a lawyer! read more

I purchased a new car in January and worked with Claudette Rodriguez to get a new policy. In addition, I purchased an umbrella policy through her. She entered them both wrong into the system. I ended up driving around with no coverage for 2 months and I'm lucky I didn't get into an accident during this time. It wasn't until I contacted Liberty Mutual today (3/15/16) to see why I couldn't add my auto policy into my online account that I found this out by filing an eService ticket. As for my umbrella policy, it's a pretty straightforward policy - I went with what she recommended and didn't customize the coverage. She got that wrong too, when entering it into the system. The only reason I stayed with Liberty Mutual was because I was so far into the process of correcting their mistakes. Otherwise, I would've switched to another insurance company altogether. read more

Worst homeowners and auto insurance carrier I have dealt with in 35 years. The homeowner died recently and we needed to get a copy of his insurance policy. I am the executor. You can't get a hold of the agent. Constantly leave voicemails, never picks up the phone, and they are nonresponsive. Agent David Fabucci in San Ramon headquarters is especially terrible. We provided Liberty Mutual with the letters of administration (twice!) and he won't even bother to look them up. Does not respond to voicemails or emails. We provided what he requested again, and we can't get a copy of the homeowners policy. By law, as executor, we are the homeowner and insured, and entitled to a copy of our policy. Absolutely the worst service and the renewal premium is sky high. Sometimes you put up with bad service to save a lot of money on the premium, but with Liberty Mutual you pay the highest premium in the market and get terrible service as well. They may have clever TV ads in front of the Statue of Liberty, but avoid this carrier! There is a reason why the reviews for Liberty Mutual in Contra Costa County are terrible. If you are one of the people raving about Liberty Mutual's great rates then you are missing the point of what is wrong with Liberty Mutual. This is a company that has based their sales strategy around aggressive and unethical sales tactics. I recently purchased a house in Burlingame and reached out to Liberty Mutual for a quote with Jeff MacDonald. While getting the quote I let the agent know several times that I would not be immediately moving into the house so that I could renovate. Just one week after having my policy go in force, I was called by Jeff to say that Liberty Mutual's underwriters were going to drop me if the house was not occupied within 30-45 days. Jeff suggested I take a "Chair and lamp" to the house and take photographs to make it look like someone was living in the house. I did not take the bait on this unethical behavior. A couple weeks later I dropped Liberty Mutual after they created a bunch of unnecessary stress in my life. I even emailed several of Liberty Mutual's VPs and their delegates responses essentially indicate that they find all of this to be perfectly fine behavior. I'm now with AAA for homeowners and back to Geice for auto. Unfortunately I lost some of my Geico discounts, but at least Geico is 100x more ethical company. Long story short, don't get fooled by Liberty Mutual's cheap prices and go to more reputable companies. read more

These fools tried to charge me a late fee of $40.00 for paying 6 days late. I told them I don't pay late fees to insurance companies. Upon explaining my position, they were of course insistent and rude. They billed me again-I cancelled my insurance after obtaining a new vendor. It was a matter of principle. They were paid for the service they provided. Charging extra seemed excessive and somewhat abusive. No matter-I moved on and saved 280.00 a year bundling. I never had a claim but thought this a timely wake up call. I left the company convinced they typify those companies that prey on their policy holders-something I will remember. We were rear ended over 5 months ago and I am still having problems dealing with Liberty Mutual. The driver who rear-ended us is insured by Liberty Mutual, who right away admitted fault in the accident. There wasn't much they could say....We were at a complete stop at a red light, minding our own business, and BAMMMMM an SUV crashed into the back of us! I somehow managed to leave enough space in between us and the car in front of us, AMAZING, as I don't make a habit of this because some of those stop lights go from green to red so quick : p and I don't like missing the light. We missed several of the lights on this day but at least we didn't have the front of the car smashed up too. I think I was in shock, my kids were silent for a little while (this does not happen often). They didn't know what hit them. When exchanging the necessary info I asked what happened...apparently, he was sleep driving AGAIN...He said he fell asleep and woke up right before he hit us. As I said earlier...what can Liberty Mutual say? Completely and totally at fault. Since my first contact with them they have given me the run around. I was instructed to take the car to one of their shops asap to assess the damages. When I told them we were sore and experiencing some after affects from the accident they advised me to seek whatever medical attention I think I need, pay out of pocket, and submit receipts for reimbursement that may or may not be covered based on the amount of damage to the vehicle. I was also to purchase a new child safety seat and submit a receipt for that as well. The same with the rental car while our vehicle was being repaired etc etc. etc. When one of the people at Liberty Mutual insisted I take the vehicle to their shop before I go to the doctor.... I got a really bad feeling. I didn't take it to their shop, I am a busy person, and the car still drove, and I didn't like that they were more concerned with the vehicle than myself and my kids. Shortly after my canceled appointment to their shop I received a letter in the mail stating that Liberty Mutual had inspected my vehicle and they see no visible damage so they are closing the claim. I don't know what vehicle they looked at or where but it wasn't ours...the back was pushed under and very visible. As of now my insurance company has been assisting me with the claim, which Liberty Mutual has used as an excuse time after time, and they have not paid the rental car fees which are on my credit card earning interest as I type. They don't recall previous conversations we have had over the phone when I call back in and I guess they just sit there and wait instead of providing any type of customer service of any sort. The claims dept. has trouble getting documents from the fax machine to the files and can't tell me what they have paid for or when they will pay the rest. Unacceptable! I have never been in the position where I thought I'd have to file bankruptcy till now. I was unaware that if I rent my home out I needed different insurance, understandable now that I've lost everything. My tenants burned down my home. Liberty denied my claim even though there was a subrogation claim thru renters insurance. After getting my denial letter I went to work filling on my own against my tenants renters policy. They offered me an offensive amount in which I cannot fix my home or even walk away from the loan. I politely emailed my liberty insurance agent and asked for advice. I'm surprised that liberty got such low reviews but then again reading them, they weren't based on the service they received from their agents but claims itself. Which of course is another story and anyone who filed a claim with an auto insurance will pretty much have the same story no matter what insurance company they file it as. My review on the other hand is the service I received from Thomas Vertin. I did an online quote with liberty and the rates I received online was way off than what I was suppose to pay. Tom spent the time going through the quote and left me a nice VM letting me know what the correct rates were. But because I was at work i couldn't get back to him until about 30 minutes before they closed on Friday evening. Tom took the time to go through every aspect of the policies (home and auto) to make sure everything thing was up to my standard, even though he already had plans for the weekend, the reason why I find his service was so great was because it was almost 7 before I said lets do it, an hour past closing time yet he was still willing to help me. He walked me through the esign process, didnt try to over sell me on any of their other products and made sure I had the right amount of coverage. Do not insure your condo/auto with Liberty Mutual - they are fraudsters. Needed a road-side assistance, no response for over 1.5 hrs. Repeated calls were responded with the same statement - "Agent is working on the case". I called a local towing company - they came in 10 mins and the car extraction was taken care of immediately. I was driving to work when a landscaping truck with burlap sacks full of yard waste lost a sack( which according to California law, needs to have a tarp over it if it comes past the rim of the rim of the vehicle)...hitting my car. He and I pulled over and I explained he'd lost a load and he tried to deny it, however, strands of burlap and large twigs stuck in my bumper said otherwise. We exchanged info and I filed a claim. Turns out his employer is insured by Liberty Mutual group. Almost one month later after countless emails and phone calls this insurance company says "my client says they didn't do it sooooo we're not paying for your car." Mind you it was less than $1000 worth of damage. These people employ every shyster tactic in the book to get over without having to take care of their clients faults.
