I am writing this review in the hope that someone in executive leadership, corporate customer…read morerelations, or an appropriate outside organization will take notice and help resolve a situation that should be relatively straightforward. My vehicle was recently struck by another vehicle in a parking lot. I was traveling at a very slow and controlled speed when the other vehicle entered the parking lot at a considerably higher rate of speed. Because my vehicle was blocking the driver's intended path, the other driver attempted to drive around me. During that maneuver, they turned their vehicle directly into mine, causing damage to my front bumper and headlight. I initially contacted my own insurance company. After reviewing the circumstances, I was advised that the other driver appeared to be at fault and that I should first pursue a claim through the other driver's insurance rather than immediately use my own coverage. The initial communication with Direct General Insurance was actually smooth and professional. However, there was an issue that concerned me from relatively early in the process. I was suspicious that there could be a problem with the driver's insurance coverage because the person operating the vehicle was not listed on the policy. I specifically raised this concern with a Direct General representative and asked about the potential coverage issue. Based on that conversation, I was led to believe that everything was in order and that the claim would be covered. At no point did I understand that I was going to be left in a position where my vehicle could remain damaged while Direct General and its policyholder worked through a potential coverage dispute. Unfortunately, once it was formally determined that there was a policy coverage issue, the communication and assistance I had been receiving essentially stopped. I now understand that Direct General is trying to determine whether the policy will be rescinded or whether the driver will be added to the policy retroactively. I understand that Direct General has an obligation to investigate its policy and determine whether coverage applies. What I do not understand is why the innocent party is effectively being left in limbo while that internal coverage determination takes place--particularly after I proactively raised the coverage concern and was led to believe that there was not going to be a problem. At this point, I am not asking Direct General to ignore its contractual obligations or make a decision without conducting an investigation. I am asking for reasonable communication, transparency regarding the status of the claim, and a timely resolution so that my vehicle can be repaired. I am a disabled veteran, and having my vehicle damaged through no fault of my own has created an additional burden that I simply should not have to carry indefinitely while an insurance company and its policyholder resolve an issue between themselves. The driver who caused this accident made a reckless decision that put the safety of others at risk. I was operating my vehicle slowly, cautiously, and responsibly. I should not be the person left bearing the consequences of someone else's actions or an insurance coverage dispute. I am simply asking Direct General to do what is reasonable: investigate the claim, communicate with me, make a coverage determination, and either accept responsibility for the covered loss or clearly explain the basis for denying the claim so that I can pursue the appropriate next steps. I sincerely hope someone in Direct General's corporate or executive customer relations department sees this and takes the opportunity to help resolve the matter. I don't want special treatment because I am a disabled veteran. I want fair treatment as an innocent third party whose vehicle was damaged in an accident that was not my fault. At the end of the day, I just want my vehicle repaired and returned to the condition it was in before this accident.
