For eight years, my wife and I used Liberty Tax in Burke, VA, with satisfaction. We appreciated their responsiveness, customer service, and integrity under Monique M.'s ownership. However, this year's experience under new ownership was a complete disaster prompting us to switch tax preparers permanently. On February 14th we contacted Liberty Tax via email to file our personal and two business returns. They promptly replied with a link to upload our documents, which we did on February 18th, confirming via email. They acknowledged receipt on February 21st, stating a preparer would contact us soon. Unfortunately, that's where things went downhill. Despite no contact, I emailed them in March as the business tax deadline approached. No response. I called repeatedly, leaving voicemails, but received no call back. Finally, on March 15th (the business tax deadline!), I spoke to someone (Lily) to inquire about our business and personal returns. She initially couldn't find our documents but eventually informed me Bryan was working on our personal return, while Annette handled business returns. I requested to speak with Annette but was unable to. I ended up scheduling a call on April 2nd with Annette. However, she never called us. I called the office after waiting 10mins. I was put on hold, and then was told Annette just got out of a meeting and would call me back. She never called back and I called the office after waiting for an additional 1hr. I ended up speaking to Jame who stated he and Annette were working on my business returns but needed two more documents. I obtained them promptly from our CPA (who clarified these weren't necessary to file) and sent them to Liberty Tax. Despite follow-up calls, I received no updates on either our personal or business returns. Emails went unanswered as well. On April 15th (tax day) Bryan contacted me regarding our personal return. He stated he was wrapping up our personal returns and working on one of my business returns. I'm not sure how he was "wrapping up" our personal return as this was our first time speaking to him. He sent us a draft personal return that he asked us to review an sign so he can efile by the deadline. However, upon review there were several inaccuracies, missing business information, and it showed a state tax obligation. I pointed out the errors and explained the missing business return information. Since our business returns affected our personal return, we couldn't e-file. Bryan proposed filing an extension, which we agreed to. He couldn't confirm if our business extensions were filed. Also surprisingly, when I requested for a K-1 for my business partner after all returns were filed, he didn't know whether I provide it or if Liberty Tax provides it (tax preparers provides this document). On the same day, Lily called to file a $100 personal return extension fee. My wife and I questioned the charge due to their negligence and lack of communication. Lily waived the fee but mentioned the state tax payment due by May 1st, which we handled ourselves. We also emailed for updates on the business returns but received no response. After a week of silence following the extension filing, we contacted them again, leaving unanswered voicemails. Finally, on April 24th, an anonymous sender from Liberty tax emailed us (cc'ing Bryan, James and Annette), stating Bryan informed everyone that he was pending me and my wife's signature to efile (even though I explained to Bryan why we couldn't sign) . Also, anonymous sender stated they would review the documents we provided and see what else was needed with Annette and James. We never received the promised list of requirements. I promptly responded addressing my concerns about my returns and the lack of communication. I never received a phone call or email after my reply. Disappointed and frustrated, we contacted a new CPA/tax preparer. They were shocked by our experience and completed both our personal and business returns in two weeks. We received a state refund instead of the tax obligation Liberty Tax communicated, and most importantly, our new preparer discovered Liberty Tax never filed the business extensions, potentially leading to nearly $1,000 in penalties per business. Thankfully, they filed a penalty abatement waiver with the IRS. If you're considering Liberty Tax in Burke, VA, we strongly urge you to look elsewhere. We wouldn't want anyone to experience the lack of professionalism, communication, negligence, competence, and integrity we encountered. read more

The cost was more than I anticipated, so make sure to ask for an estimate up front. A smaller tax company would be less expensive, but this place was flexible with scheduling and met with me twice in person. When reviewing the draft return, Annette spent an hour with me answering all my questions. They have some inexperienced junior preparers doing the prep work for them so I'd make sure to follow up by phone and email when you have a question or request of them. read more

Definitely call to get an estimate for your tax return before enlist their services. They were able to get my tax return done in a week which is great but they charge too much money for a simple tax return. Lynn claimed that my tax return was complicated because I have income from a family trust but all the info were provided by the bank already so all she needed was to use the info to fill in my return. My previous tax preparer took too long to produce my return because it was too simple and they wait until the last minute to take care of me. They only charged me around $300 for the service. This time I paid $412 to Liberty to do my. it's time to go back to Turbo tax next year. read more

I filed my taxes here the last 2 years. 2019 and 2020 were complicated tax years for me due to a pending divorce, the sale of a home in 2019, and filing jointly in 2 separate states. While I usually use turbo tax I thought my situation would be better handled by a live person that knew what they were doing (because I definitely don't). In 2019 I worked with (I think her name was) Emily and she was fantastic. She answered all my questions, got my returns filed on time and got my little refund to me. I gave them 5 stars on Google last year. So this year I brought them my similarly (but slightly less) complicated scenario. The only difference this year was that I had not sold a home, so logically it should have been easier.. but I think it makes a huge difference who you work with in this office. The lady I worked with this year had a difficult time getting me logged into their system, couldn't find last year's return, had me upload the same documents multiple times, went weeks without sending an update. Finally after reaching out multiple times Mary called my husband and told him he had to sign a form in person in her office. He lives 30 miles from the office and had to take a day off work to make that happen. So he called the morning of their appointment and Mary wasn't there. She had taken the day off unexpectedly (which is fine - I get it) but she didn't set up anyone to cover her appointments..? And nobody could access her files.. so he wasted his PTO. This was all like 2 days before the May tax deadline this year so I called and spoke with someone else in the office and she said they would try and figure out what form it was that needed his ink signature on it and call us back. She did, and said it was ok because the returns were already filed (we weren't notified of that) and this was some other form that was needed because of filing separately for the state returns, and they could just mail it to him for signature. So our returns were filed on time, my husband got the form to sign in the mail, liberty tax billed me for their servicea, and I thought all was well. Then just a couple of days ago I received **delinquent tax bills** in the mail. I wasn't given the option to send payments with the returns. Like I said - I definitely don't know what I'm doing and that is why I chose to pay $500 for tax prep services.. Obviously I don't care about the $10 in penalties I owed to the state and the IRS but getting a delinquent tax bill after such a long process with such poor communication was scary and disappointing. Why they wouldn't have suggested sending payment with the returns or giving me instructions on how/where/how much to make the tax payments is just beyond me. TL;DR - expensive, disappointing, and not super competent. read more

I usually do my family's taxes, but this year we had a couple new forms to deal with so I played it safe and dealt with professionals! My preparer was thorough, asked all the right questions, and even gave me a few minutes to run home and grab a couple extra documents. Most importantly, the price I was quoted at the beginning of our sit-down was the price we were charged, even though the actual cost was a bit more. I normally go to HR Block for my tax returns and I used to live in Virginia Beach where the Headquarters are at, that's how I found out about Liberty. I have been dreading and delaying this task, but I grabbed my pile of tax related papers and brought into this office yesterday. They got it done quickly and PAINLESSLY - a little bit over an hour. They are very professional and friendly. One team member did the work and his supervisor checked the numbers twice. I got QUALITY SERVICE at a very FAIR rate! Its a great feeling not having the tax due date hanging over my head. Their location is at the intersection of Shiplett & Old Keene Mill, near the commuter lot, the Pohick Regional Library, Shoppers, IHOP and a bunch of other businesses. The parking was steps from their door too. Their office is nice and clean with lots of sunlight. Let me just state that I have done my taxes online for about the past eight years. When doing them this year online, I came across many discrepancies with the major online tax solution competitors (getting refunds, owing, etc.) and therefore decided to have my taxes done by a professional this year to assure peace of mind. I happened to stop by a competitor of Liberty Tax Service and asked them general questions about my situation with moving, and they were completely clueless on how to handle my situation, not to mention the lack of knowing how much their services costs for clients. I therefore turned to a great source, Yelp, to hunt for "the one" tax solution center. I came across many reviews, most of them being mediocre at best. When looking at Liberty Tax Service, I noticed that they had exceptional reviews, and I was somewhat weary about that. I happened to get a next day appointment and was immediately responded to by Monique with my initial inquiry. Having lots of anxiety built up about having my taxes done, I was quickly greeted by Monique and her staff. I sat down with Erik and he was able to clearly explain the benefits of using Liberty Tax Service, outlining all costs for preparing, and finally was able to go ahead and start with my return. Erik was great to work with and was very personable and professional. He explained everything in detail, what I would be owing, any potential refunds, and what steps I needed to take to wrap everything up. However, with a purchase of a new house, some modifications to the heating and cooling system, and a move, I thought I'd let an expert take a shot. Liberty Tax Service in Springfield (corner of Old Keene Mill and Sydenstricker), did not let me down. Monique and Andrea were personable, professional and, most importantly, very knowledgeable about this year's tax code. They explained the costs and process, educated me on the various forms and paperwork I needed, and then went about filing my tax return in a manner where it was clear my interests (i.e., my refund) was their first priority. They even made calls to the local businesses involved in renovating my home to get additional information. Monique (the franchise owner) offered to do some additional accounting analysis for me free of charge so that I could anticipate my tax obligations next year! Can't say enough good things about this place!!! Because of misplaced faith with another tax service, I was in dire straights. This place was the solution! Both representatives I worked with- yeah, it took two of them to sort through the mess- were phenomenal. They made sure everything was correct, made sure I understood the process of what's and why's and even helped me out when it came to talking with a representative on the phone. When I see all 5 stars, I typically think friends and family are rating, however, I decided to go and check out this Monique that everyone rated so highly. Long story short, she is well deserving of the rave reviews and I don't know her from a can of paint. I did my own taxes online for the first time and had a hefty amount that I owed both federal and state. I thought it must have been an error. I went to Monique and much to my dismay she confirmed it was correct. She took time to thoroughly review the return although the I had them prepared through another online service. She is extremely knowledgable and e en was will to take the time to help me fill out document, which I can't image anyone else would do without charging a fee. She is also a CPA.
