I went into Johncy's with low expectations, anticipating an array of slim Jim's, beast light and many items I normally find in my grocers freezer, but came out a better man having learned the joys that lied within! I discovered that Johncy's was not simply a crappy store with a hilarious name, but rather a promised land of potations fit for a king or working class hero, which ever showed up first! Enough with the thesaurus.com words - fact is, the selection of solid microbrewery beers here is excellent. A step down from John's (seriously who isn't), but on par with any other place in town, if not even half a step up given the excellent variety for purchase. It was a lot like looking at the menu at Reds on any given night, but where the bottles were at your beck and call rather than only spoken to through a waiter. We didn't venture far from the beer aisles, but the wine and liquor selection seemed fine. Prices were very reasonable for the quality stuff you're buying and with a selection that's ever revolving, you've got plenty to choose from. To the back right is an amazing selection of larger bottles of microbrews that range from light to dark, to fruity to holly. Second only to Jon's and a couple spots in Seattle in variety and with a taste for any palate. To the left in the back are the six packs that again range from known to mysterious. The management is making a concerted effort to rotate the selection and seriously, it's rad. They're building the Iowa microbrew selection and have a great variety of regional and beyond brews. They also provide catering and will do a beautiful and professional job, going above and beyond with the quality of their food selections and presentation. The store is a fun and cozy place to shop, and they usually have samples...the deli is the highlight of the store with so many yummy treats you won't be able to walk away without at least a few goodies. You can purchase a cup of fresh coffee and there is a soup and salad bar (not sure the hours for the latter, though). The store isn't super easy to find, but there is plenty of parking. The beer selection is pretty subpar for a specialty store. The back wall is lined with cooler that are rivaled by the BP station across the street. The only out of the ordinary beers they've got are in one cooler near the counter that have some good local beers as well as some single bottles of Russian and Latvian beers. I did discover that Latvia makes one mean Lager however! The've got a decent number of sundry items including margarita salts, olives and what not. Overall, not an impressive beer store and with a number of others in the area, they're going to have to up their game to compete.

But, I was only here to buy gas for the rental car (and take a bio break), as I neared my Iowa City destination. When I attended the University of Iowa, Tiffin was its own "sleepy" town outside of Coralville, of which I appeared a few times as a guest of my parents at the old Lark Restaurant after a Saturday Hawkeyes game. Now Tiffin is basically a suburb of Iowa City, with many of the fast conveniences that this offers. One practical road trip meaning here is: the cheaper and more convenience, the better.
