Excellent family evening at Lid's, and our server Jenny rocked! We all had tenderloins, but had to take half of each home. Yum!

Shannon and Todd are serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day!! You can choose to sit in the dining room or bar. The locals are eating and hanging out here and that's all I needed to know!! They have gaming, but more importantly they have the Wisconsin pull tabs. A fully stocked bar and ice cold beers are ready for your sipping pleasure. We stopped in on 3 different occasions during the weekend. What we ordered: *** homemade hand battered fresh cheese curds- these were the best curds I have ever eaten!! For breakfast the following day: ** 3 egg omelet with fresh ham, tomatoes and cheese with a side of bacon. ** Biscuits and gravy with an over easy egg. Our food was hot fresh, and delicious. This restaurant/bar is exactly how you picture a locals place to be. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and made us feel at home. We were sad to leave as we felt like we were leaving family. This is a must stop while in De Soto!!

I wish they came in different sizes and were homemade crust. Otherwise, basic toppings, expensive add-ons, and not many specialty pizzas. Meh. The jukebox in the bar area is soooo loud. It does not "fit" the crowd of old people out trying to visit. They kept coming out to the dining area complaining it was too loud in the other room. Despite the staff's back and forth, we were not greeted or waited on for 20 minutes. We could hear them BSing in the back, but I think they forgot they were at work. We kept closing the door between the bar and dining room and the staff walking in between constantly left it open. The owners need to "read the room" and adjust the jukebox accordingly. We shouldn't have to YELL over dinner. I wear hearing aids and couldn't hear a thing! Food is inconsistent and owner-after being complimented that the food had improved since they opened only argued that it's the same food they had when they opened, which it is not. Shut up and take the compliment!

When we found this place, we decided to try it out. We didn't know that there was a bit of a gravel path to reach the restaurant but I promise ... it's worth it. We sat at the bar and were immediately greeted by the bartender (I'm sorry but I stupidly forgot her name!) and she was so funny and we bonded immediately being both boy moms. She was beyond knowledgeable of the food and drink menu which is always a huge plus! When we got our food, it was PERFECT. My husband and I are both foodies and I have had countless steaks in my life, but this hands down was THE BEST filet I have ever had. The owner Roumel, who is also the head chef, table touched which is unheard of now a days and we started talking about me being from Cleveland and him being from Chicago and next thing I know we're comparing our 2016 World Series notes. His were obviously better, but it was such a wholesome conversation! His wife Jilaine told us all about the story behind the restaurant and what encouraged them to buy it and the passion behind both of their words were so genuine that you could tell they took pride in their staff, restaurant and food. As a Cleveland baseball fan who got their heart broke by the Cubs, this meal helped a bit to forgive ... maybe not forget but definitely in the right step to forgive!

Halfway between nowhere and the back of beyond along the Mississippi River…read morein far Northeast Iowa lies the very small historic town of Harpers Ferry, where fishing and hunting isn't a sport, it's been a way of life since the beginning of time. And today, we discovered a timeless rural supper club. Read that; 'Bar and Amazing Grill & Pizza Joint'. The Spillway is a destination worthy of a national tour of local greats proving that home town beats big town every time. We passed by this place for years traveling on the Iowa side of the Mississippi between Lansing and Marquette. Then we see that the Spillway is a top five finalist in the Iowa Pork Producers annual best Iowa Pork Tenderloin sandwich competition. Well, what do you do? You go see for yourself, obviously. And Spillway is a major contender. Now, where to begin: The Spillway atmosphere is magnificent. Awesomeness as only a dark old river bar can be. You know you have struck rural gold when you walk into a dimly lit tavern and see over 25 trophy buck deer head mounts on the walls. If eating at the bar isn't your thing, the other side of the place is a well lit dining room of the kind you only find in this region. Nothing fancy, but sufficiently functional to host the Pope to one of the best tenderloin sandwiches in Iowa. We tried both the traditional breaded, and the no-breading grilled with various condiments. I'm a purist. Breaded, generous onions, dill pickles, and yellow mustard. My wife goes for grilled. But, we had the ultimate judge with us. My 92 year old mother. She is a breaded, tomato, lettuce, no onions, person. We all loved our sandwiches. Yes, Spillway is a righteous competitor for the 2023 Iowa title. Mom says hers was the most tender and flavorful pork she has had in ages. And Mom is picky: well earned in her centennial decade. Spillway breading is a light golden crispy crust that reminded me of a really well done tempura, fried to tenderloin sandwich perfection. The onion rings were equally perfect, as were the bar standard crinkle fries. I congratulate Spillway in leaving off the salt. Us older folks appreciate the lower sodium standard. Many thanks. Beyond our target tenderloin lunch today, Spillway's menu is something I'll return to explore. Especially the burgers and that awesome looking thin crust pizza. Could be a national pizza destination too, but needs further research! Value? Just look at the menu picture. Enough said. While I can be as much a beer snob as anyone, spending stupidly for a so-called craft beer, Spillway wins the day. $1.50 PBR long necks. That's VALUE. Say what you want about PBR, but it's one of America's oldest beers and what was good for my great granddad is good for me. Just go with the place and the rare moment gracing you when you find your way to Spillway.
