Lidl is a German discount grocer that operates over 10,000 stores in Europe and is presently spreading to the US. The presence of Lidl will have an effect on its German rival Aldi. The grand opening is today in Eatontown,NJ. Their motto seems to be: Rethink Grocery. Their aim is reduced prices while selling quality products. Obviously on opening today there is a lot of hoopla etc. there are many greeters at the storefront with many giveaways. I shopped hear minimally and I felt the prices were very reasonable. This is an interesting store. I haven't frequented too much. It's not on my top 5 but when I'm in the area I'll shop here and I've never had a problem. I still have to get used to Lidl. read more

They are often out of milk at 4:45 pm! There's never more than one register manned at 5pm when it's so busy! Why is that? And while we waited on a very long line, a woman asked the manager Mike if he could open up and he said "I'm a manager" and kept on walking. He ended up over by the flowers, pretending he was rearranging them. Others have mentioned, it's very inconvenient to have to wait on a line at the only register that has a cashier, if you are paying cash. It seems like a very poorly run store. Even during the worst of the pandemic, the sanitary wipes dispenser was always empty. That's just laziness. read more

I found Lidl to be quite a step up from their similar competition. A strong, selection of foods, household goods, candies, and other wondrous things. There's a very well equipped bakery, a nice selection of produce, and dry goods. Anyone who shops here is bound to fill up their basket with things they didn't even know they needed when they walk it. It's just that good. read more

The store has groceries and other things. It reminds me of Grocery Outlet on the West Coast. There are refrigerated foods all around the walls of the store and boxed and other items in the middle. You never know what you will find as the stock changes. If you understand this, you can have fun looking for better prices on many items in the store. If you expect a large variety and the same products on every visit, this is not the place to shop. read more

I shop at Lidl every week. Most items and produce are lower than typical prices at other stores. Don't think though that lower price means poor quality. Product quality including their brand is good and they sell many organic goods. Treat shopping at Lidl as an experience to try European foods like chocolates, stroopwafel, speculoos, Jaffa cakes, German donuts and other German sweets... and the packs of pocket tissues you'll only find in Europe! For EU folks, you know what I mean. And they also have a bakery, fresh croissants, cookies, pretzel bread and Portuguese pastel de nata. Really a little taste of Europe! So if you can't find those products that's typical in a US store, you can always drive there and get them. read more

Heard about this place from a friend so I figured I would check them out. Almost like an aldi's but not quite. I will admit this store is huge and overwhelming, but truthfully not impressed. Prices are all over the place and they didnt really have much. Basically it was alot of a little nothing. Produce didnt look good at all, prices weren't that great. If you know your prices this place isn't that awesome. The set up of the store is confusing and all over the place as far as non perishables. They did have alot of name brand things which was cool but the prices weren't any better than a grocery store. They dont have choices on products which is crappy. It's not even close to comparable to Aldis which in my opinion is sooo much better. I was truly let down by this place and ended up leaving with intent of going to aldis. I was not impressed. Aside from everyone being confused by the lay out and trying to find things not a place I would like to return. I will stick with my store. I've been there 3-4 times .You really have to be super careful buying produce where as the produce manager doesn't care about the condition of the fruits .bought a nan bread it had green mold festering in it.A quality run place would have thrown the produce out, the oranges were dehydrated.The cashier who was at the register was deflecting my questions and im not a fan of having a dollar store type of products being sold there .Better to go to a more organized grocery store .You may spend a little more but maybe you get what you pay for. read more

This place isn't bad. The prices, for the most part, seemed pretty good. The isles are wide and the shelves full if product that's clearly marked. They also carry general merchandise toward the back of the store. Checkout wasn't so pleasant. My wife went to the self checkout since we only got a few things. If you stand too close to he register it freezes up. If you swipe your items too fast, it freezes up. So basically a manager had to check us out at the self check-out. Oh, and bring bags. They charge 7-10 cents per bag. Just a heads up. And just so you know, the people "protesting" outside aren't protesting. It's a union informational picket line. Apparently this is a non union store, like Wegmans or Walmart. So if that kind of thing bothers you, wait a few more months and they'll stop picketing. read more

Rancid meat, refused refund. We bought a leg of lamb with a sell by date of 2/3/23. It smelled awful when we opened it but we rinsed and tried cooking. It was clear that the meat was bad and we had to throw it away because it was stinking up the apartment. Customer service refused refund even though the purchase was shown on my husbands account. I guess we were supposed to bring the stinking meat back to the store with us. read more

The store copied the concept of aldi, which they do not give a shopping bag. But, the quality of food is much better than Aldi. Most of the products are organic foods, from local markets or German foods. Therefore, you may not know the brands. Their price is much cheaper than whole foods market. If you like to shop at whole foods market, give it a try. read more

Just had the worse customer service experience at Lidl. Wanted a $2 price adjustment with my receipt on russet potatoes. Manager refused said sales run Wed to Wed. Then cashier was going to charge me for 12 quantity when I told her it was 11. So we had to recount product. All rung up and bagging, I decided to check the receipt, different item, she had rung 6 quantity when there were only 5 in the box. Instead of refunding me the price, I had to go get another one which I really didn't need. I had been enjoying this store up to today. Now I'd be hard pressed to return. There are so many other choices in my area. Note to management: obviously cashier on checkout 1 does not know how to count and she's unpleasant as well. I have my receipts if you want to know who she is. She shouldn't be on register 1. Highest traffic. She is incompetent and unfriendly. You weren't even busy this Sunday afternoon when I was there. So in case you don't get it management. No excuse. While I'm at it. I was there and so was my husband opening day. My husband and I have worked retail at the registers , stocking, night crew. Your management crew opening day was atrocious. Blocking the aisles, talking amongst themselves, ignoring foot Traffic. Today, your stocking crews atrocious. No heed for your Customers, get out of my way and let me restock the bananas. Ooh you want Bananas? You can wait till I'm done. read more

Just not enough groceries in this store. I was looking for tomato sauce(they didn't have any). Too much wasted space. Junk in bins that looked like dollar store itemsuch as little candles. I do think their bakery, produce & floral department was very good! So Lidl I is now closing Best Market in Holmdel. Bad move Lidl! I have visited Lidl in Holmdel a number of times - trying hard to find something really good about this place. I love floral department - this is the best of the entire store. Produce is disgusting - water in the sealed produce bags that are going to expire in 1 day. Don't buy your 1/2 & 1/2 as this also will expire within 1 week. Did u ever buy a case of water there? The plastic bottle is so flimsy it could melt in your car if it's over 75 degrees. I truly don't know how one can shop in this place. Very limited selection. Not many registers open. The store has good produce, but that's about the best thing about it. What is disturbing is that they advertise specials but when I've gone in for them, they are always "out". i.e., they never had them in the first place. It is just a trick to get you into the store. For example, the sale that started yesterday advertising 99 cents-per-pound chicken legs as well as a 10-pound bag of chicken leg quarters for $5.99. Neither was available. They had the signs up over a completely empty case for the chicken thighs, trying to make it look as if they'd HAD them but just sold out, but I doubt very much they ever had any if they're already "gone" the day after the weekly sale began. The leg quarters were nowhere to be seen, not even a sign. False advertising, baby. Same with advertised paper towels. None. Zilch. A sign with a big empty pallet that I suspect never held anything, lol. Also weird that they don't carry a basic item like half and half at all. This was my first stop when I came in to town to get groceries and I felt like a couple things were overpriced and I could definitely get cheaper somewhere else, the selection of fruits and vegetables were good. I felt like the store could've been a little bit cleaner but it's OK. read more

2 trips here & both were disappointing. 10 cash registers & only 1 open. Self check-out doesn't accept cash. Better bring your own bags because they don't provide any but will gladly sell you some. This place is okay. Nothing fancy, just the basics. American grocery stores have a lot of "variety", but it's basically just a bunch of the same stuff packaged by different brands. In Europe, there's not as much brand variety. That's how it is at this store. Not vegan-friendly unless you're a raw vegan. Just your run of the mill things people buy, like frozen dinners, meats, dairy, cookies. Bring your own bags or buy some of their's. People are always outside protesting because they want you to buy local, even though I guarantee all of their clothes are made in China. read more

I looove the fresh bakery! They bake all kinds of items 3X a day!! You simply cannot beat that ANYwhere!! (I highly recommend the croissants, baguettes and apple turnovers located in bakery when you walk in on your right.....) I am a long-time Aldi's shopper and was pleasantly surprised. I thought produce was good & they had a decent-sized organic section compared to Aldi's. They also carry slightly more brands too which are also cheaper then other, larger (non-competitor) grocery stores. Some bread that is marked down is good, however one bread item was eh (non on-site bakery, it was in the middle of the aisle as a mark down). Staff is hit or miss, but what do you expect? Customer service in grocery stores, or any store for that matter, is largely the same no matter where you go, I think. I can I have great or poor service at Macy's, Aldi's, my local grocery store or here. It depends on who you get. In fact the people in the store approached me and asked if I needed help, checkout is checkout, no awards there. Then again the girl at Aldis barely mustered a smile last week and they are usually friendly so it depends on the person and the day. All of these low cost stores (this one & Aldi's, for example) are not the same as Acme or a super store such as a large Shop Rite, but if you need the basics for less plus a few items (bakery, hygiene, seasonal, frozen stuff), you can find deals here. I won't take any stars off for selection because it is not a regular, full-sized store so selection cannot be compared fairly and service was great on the floor. They came to me! Try it. Love this store, it is so fun because the merchandise selection changes often. The prices are incredibly low. They have a large selection of organic fresh produce and a gluten free section. You never know what gourmet products you will find from another country . They also carry name brands. read more

Completely disappointed on my 2nd visit. Went for the grand opening week greeters up front and excellent customer service. Yesterday a completly different experience. First at 12:30 in the afternoon the front door was locked, I had a bang on it to get a manager to reopen it no one seemed to know why it was locked. Upon check out I asked where the bags were they told me they don't give bags I would have the purchase one. During my 1st experience not only were there free bags but there were baggers Why wouldn't I expect that every time? Very misleading. I asked for a manager and asked as a courtesy if they could give me a bag this time only, I would understand in the future what the policy was, the manager just said no and walked away. Not a pleasant customer service experience to say the least. As for a shopping it has a strange set up but there are some bargains and some things average price. In my opinion a strange assortment of products with food mostly on the side aisles and the middle aisles non food with some food mixed in a very difficult shopping experience also within each category the selections are very limited. After the way I was treated I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. read more

Some food items are a win, especially the prepackaged cold cuts and shrimp. Customer service is awful! You bag your own and bring or buy bags. I once tried to get just a plant for my mother, and went to a self-checkout, which I normally shun. The front-end manager practically pushed me aside to clear the register for another customer ! lousy customer service. They have orange sale signs on the products but when you go to check out, they ring up full price. If you don't watch every item rung because you are bagging your groceries you will be overcharged. If you go back the next day to get a price adjustment you have to get on line and they have to call a manager who goes to look for the sign which was taken down because it was the last day of sale. If you do a return and you used one of the $5 off coupons, they will void the coupon too, even if your remaining items still meets the $25 purchase requirement. So in essence they refund you the discounted price, not the price you paid. read more

Went there last night. Got a few items that are cheaper than elsewhere. Chips, popcorn and bread. I was going to buy the steak they had on sale, but it had no USDA grade and the staff could not find out. Clean store, better than Aldi, produce looks better than any Trader Joe's I've been to. Still misses a lot of the food variation that any standard supermarket has. read more

A lot of these reviews will not he honest. Shoprite is trying to push them out. They have been protesting outside for weeks.. so I expected to find a lot of silly bad reviews on here. I go to this store almost every other day. It's awesome. The food is amazing, and the prices soooooo much better then shoprite and other local stores. After shopping here I went to shoprite and walked out. I couldn't see spending my hard earned cash on the overpriced stuff in that overloaded place. Lidle might not have everything but their prices and quality do it for me. I also love checking out all the non food items they have. I have bought some great shoes, clothes and even plants. All great quality and so cheap.... Never have I experienced bad customer service, and like I said I shop there A Lot! This store is not ment to have everything but if you get used to it, you will rarely need to go to another food store. They are ment to help you save money and supply you with great quality and they do. Their bakery is out of this world and I think I have already gained 5 lbs on their chocolate/hazelnuts filled croissants... and I'm ok with that!
