I was totally blind sided by how rude Mike Cody was to me. My father used his company for decades when his father ran the business and his father was a very nice man and had a great repair with my dad. The only thing my wife and I could figure out why he was such a jerk was he must have some past issue with me. I have no idea what that might be. Also, he quotes $700 for my taxes. He had previously told me that was his minimum and the work on my taxes were far easier but the $700 was his minimum. My bill ended up being $1500 with no heads up that the cost would more than double. As a reference, my account for this year is charging $450. Make your own choice. read more

Good: Mike Cody is responsive and knowledgeable. Bad: I was deceived regarding cost to do tax return. Initially cost was discussed, however charged rate was more than double for a personal return (not an LLC or Corp.; do not have estimated taxes). I was billed more than nine hours. It is true he lists his rates on website; Senior CPA and EA hourly rate is $215 per hour. Suggestion: Review his rates. Get a quote in writing. This was a very expensive lesson. I wondered how an accounting firm can be in business for 28 years and have only 2 reviews on Yelp. One was from yesterday, and the person has never written another review. Red flag, it's a friend. The only other review from 2019 also has almost no other reviews. Another friend. I came to realize that it was most likely listed under the firm's former name before Mike Cody became a partner in what I think was his father-in-laws firm in 2016, and took over when Mr. Lieb retired. That's the only way there's only fresh, friendly reviews on here. Because Mike Cody is unbelievably arrogant, and rude to clients who's family has given Mr. Lieb tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in business over the years. If I EVER spoke to a customer the way Mike Cody speaks to his, I would be fired on the spot, and rightly so. The thing is that Mike doesn't know that my husband's father was a long time client of the firm before he passed away. Mr. Lieb's firm handled all of his company's accounting, as well as his personal accounting and those of his family. When my husband's accountant suddenly retired, he decided to go back to Lieb's out of convenience, but unfortunately now Mike is in charge. My husband's business is small, and his finances not terribly complicated, so they quoted their minimum to him, which was higher than he paid in the past, but decided to go with it because he didn't have a lot of time to shop for a new accountant. Let me first say that my husband is the nicest, kindest, gentlest, most soft-spoken person, who is never rude to anyone, even to me when I deserve it. Everyone is his friend, and no one ever says a bad word about him. When we got into sending documents and signing papers, even the most innocent, innocuous question from my husband was met with derision from Mike. When I read them, I was in a state of shock. I told my husband, "this is really weird. I've never seen anything like it. It's almost like he has some sort of personal vendetta with you. Do you think he knew your dad and didn't like him and now he's taking it out on you? This just doesn't make any sense." He said, "I don't think so. My dad always dealt with Mr. Lieb. I don't think he interacted with Mike". The firm made mistakes on both the federal and state forms which resulted in us not getting our full refund, and a tax bill from the state. When we emailed them to tell them, Mike blamed the mistakes on both the federal government and the state, and lobbed more snarky venom at us for merely asking questions. Well, if it was the government's mistake, why do we have to sign new, revised tax forms? If the forms were correct, the govt should have just fixed their mistake I would think. We didn't dare ask Mike this question, lest we have to absorb his nastiness at us for even asking. They fixed the problem and we got our money. When the bill form them came and it was nearly double what we were originally quoted (granted, we added a few things, but not double the work), and we asked why, there was just more rudeness with Mike saying that if we didn't like their price, we could take our business elsewhere. No worries about that buddy. We will be. Was just waiting to get my money before telling you where to stick it. I realize that we are small fish to Mike, so he doesn't care. But what he doesn't realize that the person he treated like dirt is a client whose family has done business with his firm for many years, and still has family friends who do business with him. When we told one of them our saga, they said, "yeah, Mike can be like that sometimes". I said that I hope he was just having a bad month, going through a tough time or something and taking it out on him. The friend said, "naw, that's just Mike". When I asked him why he still does business with him, the friend shrugged and said, "I'm too lazy to switch". The thing is, the reason my husband had stopped using them in the first place is that unlike his other accountant, Mike didn't ask a lot of questions looking for tax savings, or offer any suggestions on reducing taxes, etc. He wasn't really a consultant, just a tax preparer. Maybe he does for his large clients, but doesn't want to be bothered with small business clients. I don't know. But I do know that there are plenty of accountants out there that will treat my husband with the same respect that my husband shows to everyone else. Take your business elsewhere. They don't want or need it here. Oh. I am so grateful for this company that I'm writing my first yelp review. I have complicated taxes because I have multiple W2's as well as 1099's. I had been with a tax attorney for a few years and everything he did sounded correct and I liked the fact that he was an attorney which made me feel safe using him. Unfortunately, he had not been doing my taxes correctly which resulted in me losing thousands of dollars. When I asked if we could redo and amend my taxes, his response was "your taxes are already done. There's nothing else we need to do" except now I don't have a savings account because of the mistakes he made. I met with Mike and Melissa at Lieb, Cody & Co and they were able to immediately see the mistake. They amended my 2017 taxes and were able to recover my losses from that tax year. Not only were they able to recover my losses, they made changes to my deductions for 2018 and I actually got money back this year! This company has been very responsive to my calls and questions and they'll even review my earnings before tax season to make sure I'm on track. I used to dread tax season, but they're very organized and provide a checkoff list so I know exactly what is required of me. Another thing I like about this company is that they're knowledgeable about small business' and rental incomes because I plan on buying rental property in the future.
