I took the tour today. I live very close to the new Sandy Springs location at the Prado which opened on May 4 2012, an is the 100th gym they've opened in the US. I was hoping that I would like the gym (and the price) enough to join. Full disclosure: I've never been a huge gym person, but as it's right around the corner I was hoping that the close proximity would more than offset my lack of motivation to regularly workout at one.
First off, this place is truly HUGE and impressive, with 175,000 + sq ft of space on 3 massive floors, plus lots of outdoor space on the roof and around the outdoor pool area - it certainly does not feel "packed in" like an LA Fitness. The 3 pools (2 indoor, 1 outdoor) are awesome, and offer plenty of lap lanes as well as a few recreational areas for kids. There are water slides and fountains at the outdoor pool, as well as an impressive amount of space and pool chairs for laying out - I can't imagine them all being filled at once...ever. The outdoor pool is heated and is open from May -October according to the person that gave me the tour.
Speaking of the tour...even though there are no long-term contracts, the little offices they use for "explaining" the membership to you make it feel like you're being talked into buying a car. That first impression made me feel like I was once again walking into a high-pressure sale at a gym by someone on commission. The guy was very nice, but I would have thought that a gym this nice would be less typical in their process.
There are 3 levels, the highest of which has 2 nice basketball/ squash courts, and a very cool sundeck with plush patio furniture and sunshades on the roof for just hanging out, reading, sunning, eating, etc. I believe they serve beer and wine up there as well, if I remember correctly. There's also a small Bootcamp class area on the roof with artificial turf. There are nice dedicated rooms, for yoga, hot yoga, pilates, and other classes. There's also a room for "TRX" which I interpreted as something vaguely similar to Crossfit, except that you just use your own body weight for most of the exercises (they don't have formal group classes for this yet). The machines are all probably nicer than you would expect, and there are tons of them. Probably more than a casino has slot machines, but they don't feel cramped at all - ellipticals, treadmills, bikes, rowers, etc. and they're extremely nice, new, and high-tech . Most have dedicated flat-screens attached to watch TV and/or plug in your headphones, iPod, etc. There's a very nice cafe on the first floor which serves healthy food and has wi-fi, and there are several saunas and steam rooms, including one co-ed. Basically you could spent all day at this luxurious place (the Sandy Springs location is open from 4am - midnight every day).
The reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating is the price - based on the description above, I know that you would expect it to be expensive to pay for all of this, but I was a little shocked that the $132/ mo. fee didn't include some of the classes (Bootcamp is a ridiculous $175/ mo. ON TOP of the base fee). There are no contracts (a good thing in my opinion), so every individual membership is month-to-month at the $132 rate, and they claim they give no discounts, even to corporate members (I think they have a different couples/family rate, but I don't believe it's much less). The Sandy Springs location is called a "Platinum" club, and this membership will get you access to any of their other clubs, whereas if you join a "Gold" level club (e.g. Woodstock), you would only have access to other Gold clubs, and not the Sandy Springs location. The guest fee is rather steep at $25/ visit, and you only get 8 guest passes per year. So don't expect to bring your non-member friends/ family in to enjoy the place with you often. Finally, they charge 2 one-time fees to join: $129 "admin fee" and a $99 "enrollment fee". Currently (as of early May 2012), they're waiving the enrollment fee. Gee thanks.
Finally, one interesting point - I called a different location to check pricing and learned that the Platinum membership (i.e. Sandy Springs) also gives you access to a big indoor/ outdoor tennis facility in Norcross that the company recently purchased, as well as some golf access (I didn't ask where). I was surprised that I wasn't told this during my tour.
All-in-all, it's an incredibly nice, upscale club with many plush amenities if you can afford it...or can get your company to pay for you. read more
