I had a very nice, expensive lamp I had imported form Italy that had European plug and wiring. Two electricians that i had used before for home projects both said they do not do jobs like this, so I kept looking and stumbled upon Light for You. We've had two 30 year old lamps rewired (the matching lamps started flickering about a year apart and I've had a bad switch) at different times. A few years ago, we brought an old floor lamp ,that was given to my wife by her family, took it to two other places and even tried fixing it myself, well the owner explain to me that everything that was been used for the lamp was wrong, reason why nothing stayed secured in place ( glass, socket, wire or switch) so we had him fix it, well few years later everything still works great, he also fixed another small lamp for US and recently Our bathroom 4 light bulbs fixture started to malfunction, one light bulb will burn right away , while another started flickering, so call 3 electricians , the all said buy a new fixture and then call to have it replaced, well at $500 to replaced it , I took it to Lights for you and well the owner explain that it was the light bulbs themselves, even when I explain that I had changed them 3 times already, well he said I don't need to fix anything, I don't want to charge you for something that you don't need, he said look lets install my light bulbs and try, so we did , I stood watching my fixture work just fine and still works great, this person is trustworthy and honest, every time I go there there is not upselling or extra labor, just a very honest man running a business, I really hope the community supports small businesses like this one. read more

I called Michael's shop on late Saturday afternoon. I have an Artemide Tizio lamp from the 1980's. The shop is listed on the manufacturer's website archives. After a text of my lamp and that my request for replacing the pivot stems with red insulators, I knew right away he is the right person to do this work. Yesterday I brought my lamp to the shop and Michael not only replaced the two pivot stems, he also replaced a section of the counterweight on the base. To top it off, he also checked my halogen bulb, showed me how to replace in the future and all was done within the morning while I enjoyed breakfast in his neighborhood. We have a light fixture in our dining room that was slowing burning out (3 bulbs, 2 were burned out); the wiring was the issue, not light bulbs. In looking for potential replacements, we really couldn't find anything that we liked. The original fixture had won a design award when we bought it, and the design has held the test of time for us, so we really wanted to fix it. I found Mikhail here on Yelp and went to visit him. He came to have a look at the light, took it and fixed it overnight. It helped that we live in the neighborhood! Efficient, excellent work and reasonably priced. Can't ask for more. My almost 96 year old Godmother asked me to have three of her lamps repaired - two floor lamps and one antique Italian table lamp. I took them to Michael's shop yesterday and he was incredible. He ended up rewiring all of the lamps and he installed new sockets, switches and plugs. He even replaced two bulbs, including one very unusual bulb I could never have found at a hardware store. Michael went the extra step and put new felt at the bottom of the table lamp. He took so much care to make sure everything was done properly, asking me which colors to use for the new wires that go to the various plugs. Michael had the three lamps done within a few hours, charged a very reasonable price and itemized the receipt to the penny. I was so impressed with his work that I returned later in the day with three of my own table lamps which were giving me trouble. Michael found that my pair of Waterford crystal lamps were short-circuiting and showed me the wires where this was happening. He finished my lamps within a few hours and all are working perfectly and functioning safely. It was such a positive experience being in his shop and interacting with him. Michael clearly takes pride in his work and I am so grateful he was able to repair a total of six lamps within one day. Patient 1: a mid-century modern George Nelson bubble lamp that cost me $300 eight years ago. The pull cord broke after years of use, and it took the website who sold me it over a month to tell me the manufacturer couldn't do anything about it (probably because they'd like me to buy another one from them at today's cost of $500). Patient 2: a floor lamp I bought from West Elm in 2005. I've never found anything else that can light my living room so well and look stylish doing it, so I was really bummed out when the power switch broke. This is a long over due and very well deserved recommendation for a Light For You whose proprietor Michael is an absolute gem and master-craftsman. Our Tzio lamp arms had separated and we arranged to bring it to Michael on a Friday afternoon. After looking at the lamp, Michael suggested we also replace the counterweight since a part of the plastic frame had snapped off. He said he would have to order the part and that it would take a few days after that to repair the lamp. He provided a written estimate that was very reasonable. The following Tuesday, Michael called and said that the lamp was ready for pick up...absolutely amazing! Our broken Tzio lamp was as good as new if not better thanks to Michael. I had this Tizio lamp that had been broken for awhile. Not sure where to take it for repair until I decided to call DWR to ask about repair services and they gave me the phone number to call Light For You. With slight apprehension I called the number and Mike (aka Michael) answered the phone. He asked me if I knew what was wrong with it and I told him that it just didn't work when I tried to turn it on; not sure if it was the light bulb, the transformer, or something else was the problem. I proceeded to ask Mike for an estimate. He said that if it was a problem with the transformer then it would be couple of hundred since the whole base need to be replaced; else the cost would be under $100. I thought that was quite fair since I considered the Tizio to be a very good lamp and it would not hurt to have it checked out. Mike is really nice on the phone and was very patient in giving directions to his shop. Since it was a long way to San Francisco, I thought of checking Yelp for reviews. The positive reviews gave me the needed confidence to plan a stop at Light For You on my trip to San Francisco. When it comes to repairs, I judge them on the following 3 criteria: 1. Quality of work: When Mike turned the switch on the lamp, it worked! WTH, I was scratching my head wondering why it didn't work at home... feeling a little foolish... and wondered if I should make a quick exit (since it seemed to work) or hang around and have a thorough check done on it. Mike said to leave it on for awhile to see if it would continue to work and also do a thorough check. Upon close visual inspection (he knows where to look for problems), we found that there was a crack in one of the connector's insulation cap which was the culprit. To make sure it would work at home, I should really fix it. I then left the lamp with Mike to work on and went to the Greenhouse Cafe across the street (which is a really neat joint and has good coffee). 2. Price: Very fair and the final cost was under $50 (even less than the estimate) which made me happy. And as another reviewer mentioned, Mike also offered me quarters to feed the parking meter. 3. Customer service: Mike is very knowledgeable on Tizio lamps and he patiently explained the mechanics of the lamp to me. Showed me how to take it apart and put it back together and most importantly, how to handle/carry it - by that time, I realized that I had mishandled the lamp and was responsible for breaking it (carried it incorrectly and put stress on the connector, duh). Note to self, always carry it by its base gingerly and with both hands. Mike was also kind enough to help carry the lamp to my car. Conclusion: Light For You is as good as it gets. Mike is professional and friendly, and has definitely gained my trust for future business and referrals. Oh, it was really neat that he has no idea that he is getting good reviews on Yelp. He told me that he works with his hand and has no idea about computers, it was fun to see his reaction when I used my phone to show and read him the Yelp reviews. read more

Every so often you stumble across a gem, and this was one of those occasions! I took my Santa & Cole G5 Tripode lamp here after 15 years of use and multiple falls. It had bent legs and the socket was smashed. The shade was also bent. I had taken it to another reputable repair shop a couple of years ago when it was less/differently damaged and they did a pretty poor job. It's a very modern lamp from Spain, and you might not think Mike fixes them, since his shop is full of more traditional lamps. But Mike fixed it within hours - the legs, the socket, and even straightened the very large shade which I'd not been able to do myself, even though it looks simple. And all for under $50 on a $1200 lamp. Finally, he's a friendly and interesting and lovely guy to talk with! I could not recommend more highly! read more

Michael is a throwback from another time when businesses actually cared about their customers. Every time I go to his store I leave with a smile on my face. Equally important, he is great at fixing lights! My wife inherited some German mid-century modern sconces, table lamps, and chandeliers from her grandfather. They were not working, and needed cleaning. Michael painstakingly cleaned all of the crystals, replaced all the wiring, and got the lights working like new. He also helped me shorten an extension for a chandelier I bought at HD Buttercup that was originally intended for a house with high ceilings. Michael came up with a creative solution and, since I wanted to give the light to my wife for her birthday that day, was able to fix it on the spot. He took me down to his shop where the magic happens, and I learned how to repair lights! In another life I would love to become Michael's apprentice and learn the craft from this master!
