Today I stopped by Michaels to exchange a skein of yarn for a different color and possibly purchase…read moreadditional yarn. When I walked up to the checkout area, there were at least two self-checkout stations available and one cashier behind the register. There were no other customers waiting to check out. Despite this, the cashier spent several minutes talking with another employee standing in front of the register before either of them acknowledged that I was there. Once the other employee stepped aside, I politely smiled and moved my cart up to the counter, but I still wasn't acknowledged. Eventually, without making eye contact or greeting me, the cashier simply motioned with her hands for me to place my items on the counter. Since I also had a return, I waited until there was finally an opportunity to explain why I was there. After the other employee walked away, the cashier greeted me and processed my return. During our interaction, she repeatedly called out loudly to customers entering the checkout area, directing them to use the self-checkout stations, which made it difficult to have a conversation. I had planned to purchase an additional skein of yarn because I had seen an online promotion and wasn't sure whether the sale applied to all yarn or only certain brands. When I politely asked, the cashier responded, "How would I know that?" I was honestly taken aback by the response. Rather than ask another employee or offer to check, she dismissed the question entirely. At that point, I decided to put the extra yarn back and only purchase the replacement skein I originally came for. I understand that retail can be stressful, and everyone has difficult days. However, customers shouldn't feel like they're inconveniencing employees simply by asking for assistance or basic information. A friendly greeting, eye contact, and a willingness to either answer a question or find someone who can would have completely changed this experience. I'm leaving this review in hopes that it's taken as constructive feedback, because customer service is just as important as the products a store sells.

I never wanted to be hired to do it. However .., putting together a soirée for close friends and family is totally my jam and I'm looking forward to seeing the look on my mother's face once she see the GIGANTIC cluster of balloons i assembled ( well actually Michaels did all the work ).., can hardly WAIT to see the look of shock and delight on my mothers face as I've typically gone the traditional route and given her cards in the past.
