I visited Lil Rugratz Daycare to inquire about care for my two-month-old. Tami was friendly during the tour, and I appreciated her welcoming attitude at first. However, I was told there wouldn't be an infant spot until January, and in order to hold that spot, I'd have to pay $100 per week (for 5 months) -- totaling over $2,000 -- just to reserve it. This fee would not go toward tuition, care, or anything else. I paid a $55 enrollment fee at the time but couldn't shake the feeling that something didn't sit right.
After reflecting on it and comparing with other local daycares (most of which only charge a small one-time holding fee), I reached out to let her know I couldn't justify paying that amount -- especially while also paying for a nanny and another daycare. That's when she suddenly said a spot would be opening September 1st, even though she had just told me January. I responded expressing interest, but she never opened or replied to my message.
As a first-time mom, I now feel this may have been a manipulative or predatory tactic -- either the spot never existed, or it did and I was being pushed to pay unnecessary fees under false pretenses. Either way, it felt deceptive and left me deeply uncomfortable.
Even if she were to reply now, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my child in her care after this experience. Parents, please be cautious. Trust your instincts and ask questions -- especially when someone is asking you to pay hundreds (or thousands) upfront for nothing in return. read more
