I've never seen anyone in this restaurant before, but decided to give it a try today. If you reserve a table - and order à la Carte - you get 20% off the final bill. They will try to slip on an "optional" 10% service charge, though!
The Beef Rendang was meltingly tender, with many layers of flavour. The Seafood Sizzling [sic] had a generous amount of green-lipped mussels, scallops, prawns and squid in a delicious real oyster sauce with onions and red capsica. Mixed seasonal vegetables in a sambal sauce were done to perfection, if a little ambitiously-priced at £6. Jasmine rice was authentically sticky, but lacked perfume. I had rambutans (stuffed with pineapple!) in a sweet, aromatic syrup - good - and my other half had filter coffee, which didn't impress overmuch. We shall definitely go back, though. The mains were very good, and the flavours subtle; far too often, "fusion" cuisine relies on chilli heat, whereas galangal, tamarind and lemon grass impart a delicacy which allows the natural taste of the main ingredients to come to the fore.
The service was friendly but discreet. We were the only customers there, which is why I've scored it 5 for ambience!
With a bottle of San Pellegrino the total cost was roughly £17.50 per head. read more
