They currently carry Purest, a brand that's based in ON, and every Wednesday is gluten-free day; they have pizza and sandwiches that are really yummy. And, today I even scored a GF brownie - delicious. Prices definitely reflect the quality, which I won't complain about - it just makes it a more occasional stop for me.

What I love is the selection of fresh, local produce at great prices. The vendors are mostly very cheerful and friendly folks, and I enjoy making my weekly trips to pick up whatever is in season. I don't pay much attention to the craft/baked goods or jams and jellies - although they all look fantastic. They are not really up my alley, but if you're interested, come check them out. This market will never be the biggest, nor the most varietal, but what it does offer is great local food from local people. In fact, I'll go as far as to say I prefer the simplicity that some of the other reviewers seemed to be disappointed by. There are no frills here, and that's just the way I like it.

There were wooden crates in front of the display empty except for the top one which had the same rotten beans in it. I saw what I thought was an employee from the produce section and I said "your beans are rotten." His reply was " a lot of them in there are". Why would a store like Farm Boy dish up the last of their rotten beans instead of discarding them. I was very disappointed that a store that prides itself on its produce would actually charge for rotten beans let alone expect people to buy them.

First one laughed when we mentioned a dairy allergy. Second told us that our 10 items was too many for the 8 item line, 4 of which were the same item. There were 2 other cash open each with a line of 3-5 with at least half full carts. Cashier doesn't look at general direction, doesn't talk to me, almost threw items on counter, then after I paid under his breath come again...turned looked laughed not in this lifetime. The cafe is located in the back with seating inside and outside. My husband ordered the Harvest Salad and a soup and I had the Tuna Salad on a wrap with soup. Both of our meals were excellent and what we wanted for a healthy lunch. The Thai soup was flavorful and delicious, the tuna salad was light and fresh, and the harvest salad was fresh and the mix of the Gorgonzola cheese with the apples was very good. Wendy's Country Market is the retail store version of Wendy's mobile market, which links up piles of local food producers (from Buffalo meat to baby lettuce heads) to individual customers, wholesalers and restaurants. Needless to say, come Spring and through Fall Wendy and Rick are busy people. Good thing they have an adorably floppy Basset Hound riding shotgun on deliveries. Anyway, the store is out in the boonies. But if you're around the area/looking for a country drive it's a great place to stop in. Wendy and whatever relative/friend is working can give you a rundown on pretty much every product in there. Plus it's in an old school house with lots of the original interior. Neato.

The Long Version: I love health food stores, so I had to check out Foodsmiths when we were in Perth. It's similar to Dandelion Foods in Almonte, and Natural Food Pantry or Kardish in Ottawa. Foodsmiths does seem to have more local items though and they have a formidable bakery section that the other stores I mentioned lack. They had tarts from Mrs. Garrett's Bake Shop (in Inverary, Ontario). As an aside, when I hear Mrs. Garrett, I will forever think of Charlotte Rae's character in "The Facts of Life." Lol. This clearly exposes me of being of a certain vintage ;) The regular prices of items that are easily found at other stores (e.g. Carbonaut, Made Good, Organic Meadow, etc.) are a tad higher than at the stores in Ottawa, but they have clearance sections and discounted items throughout the store. We were there at the end of January (2025) and I noticed a small Lunar New Year display with red lanterns, red parasols and a blue dragon. I was surprised to see that they sell sandals (!) They're all Birkenstock style sandals though, lol, the brands I saw were Finn Comfort, Haflinger, and Mephisto. I enjoyed poking around the store. Lots of free parking in their private parking lot.
