He did interviews of everyone BUT our child, and offered to have two large men get her in the middle of the night "but we don't use restraints", take her on a plane by herself to Utah (not close), for a YEAR and she would have a baby calf. Even her testing psychologist said it was ridiculous to try to find a match and make a diagnosis of a child you had never met. No refund. No explanation why he couldn't find what he said he would, especially since he claims to know all the places to help children in distress.

This review is based on my own communications with the practice. On Jan. 12, 2026, I told the therapist that I had contacted the office for scheduling information and was told I was not listed as someone who could receive it. I asked what was needed to be included and stated that the court order authorized my access. On Jan. 29, 2026, I specifically asked what Renewal needed from me to add me to the system/portal for notifications, including forms, ID verification, or a copy of the order. Instead of asking me directly at that time for ID or court documentation, the response I received was that the other parent had been sent a document she needed to complete so I could receive notifications, and that she also needed to sign the treatment plan. On Feb. 4, 2026, the therapist again wrote that Renewal was still waiting on the other parent to sign off on the treatment plan and fill out the contact form with my information so I could be added. On Mar. 6, 2026, I again clarified that I shared legal custody and equal parental rights and offered to resend the court order if needed. From my perspective, the issue was not clinical confidentiality or therapy notes. I was seeking basic administrative access: appointment notices, scheduling information, attendance confirmation, billing/records information, and a clear process for parent access. That process was confusing and delayed for months. Later, the practice characterized the issue as verification and portal limitations, but the earlier emails show my access was being held up by the other parent's paperwork/signature rather than by a direct request to me for verification. I respect the need to protect minor-client privacy, but a therapy practice should have a clear, timely, and neutral process for verifying and communicating with both legal parents about administrative records. In my experience, Renewal's process was not clear or timely.

The impact that Charlene has had on my life is hard to capture in a Yelp review, but suffice to say it was overwhelmingly positive and informative. Not to deify her, but in the 5 years since I stopped seeing her I have not had a severe recurrence of depression or anxiety. While Charlene is certainly not the sole reason for my ongoing mental well-being, there is no doubt in my mind she has greatly enabled it. I gained such valuable perspective-- and ultimately emotional and mental resilience-- from her unwavering ability to guide me in critically examining my thoughts and actions for what they really were. Charlene enabled me to better understand, navigate and overcome my inner critic (my irrational, negative thought patterns; unattainable self-imposed rules; and co-dependent relationships). The tools, strategies, and decades of experience she brought to our sessions have resulted in healthier response patterns, which continue to be invaluable to my day-to-day experiences. Charlene's style is direct and resolute, which I particularly valued but realize may be difficult for others-- perhaps that's why the negative reviewers here unfairly label her as "harsh and cold", creating an "unsafe space" and showing favoritism to "clients she likes". In both my one-on-one and group therapy experience with her, Charlene was uncompromisingly professional. Yes, she is quirky; her cluttered office is a veritable botanical garden with all the plants everywhere; and her [well-behaved] crated dog is in the room. If you're seeking an "amenity-rich" and "comfortable" therapy experience with someone who will reassure and coddle you in their luxury office space, Charlene is not for you. She is very knowledgeable and uses different methods to help you cope and understand your feelings and so you can process a painful past and not let it impinge on the rest of your life. She is a great listener but unlike another therapist I had in the past, she doesn't just listen and tell you its "normal", she actually discusses how it's affecting you and ways to lessen it's impact on your mental health. She uses EMDR, a therapy that helped me SO much by lessening the pain of past trauma and now the remembrances of these events is much more infrequent and does not cause high levels of anxiety. You can ask my husband, my life has vastly improved since I started seeing Joan. Karen, her office manager, is very sweet and friendly and it is just such a great environment. If you are in need of a genuine, caring and highly qualified counselor, I highly recommend Joan.
