So I'm back in the Valley from school and went here based upon the Yelp reviews.. and I have no idea why everyone is so positive? Poor presentation, a frustrating haircut, and a negative experience within the store all equals to these two stars.
**GENERAL ADVICE**
This lady is Korean and understands English ok, but not to the point where you're comfortable using plain English. I exerted a lot of effort to try to communicate what I wanted. So if you don't speak Korean, it may be a bit tense for you to communicate what you want and know she's understanding you.
Additionally, the place looks pretty darn rundown. Pictures are pretty faded and the decore just looks old. I'm not knocking too hard on this b/c I care about the cut more than the ambience, but still the place felt cold, slightly unkept, and almost like she took no pride in her shop.
**THE CUT**
The store owner was actually not as nice as some of the other reviews say. She just asked me what I wanted (no hello, smile, etc.). I asked for a pretty standard "faded undercut," something a lot of men these days are asking for. She looked confused, however, and I had to dig up a Facebook picture to show her what I wanted. The cut was going ok.. she did the fade fine (you can't mess up fades.. I used to do it on myself and friends for free) and was layering ok, but the whole time it looked like she was winging it and wasn't too sure what she was doing. I don't mind clarifying and conversing with stylists about my hair, but it's frustrating when it seems like she's guessing and isn't asking follow up questions, how I like it, etc.
Her tools are also not up to par. Having styled hair myself on the side, I could tell her scissors weren't sharp or well kept, and her buzzer wasn't well-oiled. No pride in your tools or shop isn't helping her case.
**THE WORST PART**
40 minutes into my cut (which is already really long for what I'm asking for), and this other Asian customer waltzes in, astonished that the woman is cutting my hair. The lady demands that she has 10 minutes for a cut (who takes 10 minutes for a cut?!) and needs to go home and shower and drive an hour away for something. I understand everyone has busy schedules, but this lady didn't have an appointment and was standing 2 feet away from my cut, staring us down trying to intimidate the barber to finish faster. I kindly told her that if she didn't have an appointment, then she had no right to demand the barber to finish fast for her. What irked me though was that the barber did not stand up for me; she begun cutting fast, finishing me up, and blewdry my loose hair. She didn't even ask if I was satisfied with the cut (which I wasn't yet!) and promptly walked me to the front desk to pay. Maybe these two ladies are friends, but still, if you have no appointment, you have no right to intrude into my cut. And if you're a store owner, you should defend your customers, no matter the relationship. This was just... a horrific experience.
**OVERALL**
To put it in perspective, I always tip barbers nice (usually above 15%) b/c I know it can be a tough business, but the experience here was so edgy and frustrating that I paid and left. Thankfully the cut was only $10. I would not recommend unless you are a homey with this lady or you have a reference, and you speak Korean. The only pro is that... well it WAS a $10 cut and she didn't screw up necessarily. But customer service, ambience, and ultimately the cut has led to my 2 stars. I'm not going back here. read more
