The fact that there is a farmer's market in Bushwick is quite exciting in itself- local organic produce has even crept into the hood! Just in case you missed this detail- there are two location: Wednesdays @ Broadway & Linden, Saturdays @ Maria Hernandez Park. They've recently added a live cooking demo & food tasting series to the saturday market. Definitely swing by for this at some point. Today I got to taste a delicious portabello ropa vieja. Yum. I didn't linger on the cooking demos too long, but one can certainly gain some knowledge on cooking all those fresh tasty vegetables. I'll stop through again sometime soon. There is a CSA called NEXTDOORGANICS stationed at the Bushwick Farmer's Market that I'll probably be joining. This CSA is unique in that you don't pay upfront for the whole harvest season, you can go week by week. Also, fresh cut flowers are included in your weekly pickups. Aside from veggies, Bushwick Farmer's Market also has local honey, cheese and milk, brewklyn grind coffee and artisanal bread. I look forward to seeing this farmer's market grow in the future. What they are doing is wonderful.

There's tons and tons of park space of all sorts in the immediate vicinity (outdoor BBQ, dog runs, track and field, or just plain grass lawns with plenty of trees and open), which makes this a fun experience for an hour or two rather than just quickly buying and leaving. You can easily buy some supplies at the market and have a snack or picnic steps away. This place is around all year I believe but we really enjoy coming in the Fall, as there's great options here for hot cider and donuts, fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious cheese and milk (some of the best Eggnog I've had is sold each year at this market), and lots of other stuff to peruse from while on a leisurely weekend stroll. We live over in Queens, and there's some half-decent similar markets around in that part of town, but it's just nicer to bike or commute over to Greenpoint and enjoy this Farmers Market on a Saturday. If you're in the area on a Saturday morning, treat yourself and stop by.

It's actually a grocery ordering service and this is their Brooklyn hub. How cool? No more wilted produce...no more being disappointed....let's hope. The lady who was working at the time was super eager and welcoming. She explained how everything worked and gave me a card to sign up. She said it's very simple. I went on the website and they have all types of locally produced goods. They also have a selection of meats as well. They even have coffee. You can set up delivery or schedule to pick up service. It's like a book of the month club for organic goods. I'm excited. Hopefully, the delivered results get them the missing star. *crossing my fingers*

You have to commute to other areas with a Trader Joe's and even Whole Paycheck (ahem, Whole Foods) is too far away. I was so excited to try a local option and was hoping for quality produce right here in Bed-Stuy. To my chagrin, the produce was truly subpar. Maybe I got them on a bad week (4/29 was when I got my small basket) but still the experience is enough to make me cancel right away. For $25 (the small basket) we got a small mixed salad container, a few potatoes, a few beat-up carrots, a few root vegetables, and a stick of knotweed that I have no clue what to do with. The fruit package ($15) got us exactly 4 apples and one of them was so beat up it went immediately in the trash, 5 teensy lemons, and one grapefruit. I am far from cheap and would be happy to pay for quality organic local produce but honestly this is a rip-off. $15 for 4 apples, 5 lemons, and a grapefruit?! And horrible apples at that! This is absurd! I know there are other CSA options - and I hope they are better because this experience was truly disappointing. Oh, and we ordered the $6 eggs which didn't arrive and we were told we won't be charged but we were indeed charged for them.

Variety every week, always new stuff for us to try (romano beans! scapes!) and some standards we love (cucumbers! butter lettuce!). We picked this CSA because it directly partners with a specific farm for an entire season (unlike fake CSAs that are just middlemen who mark up produce they buy from all over and don't provide any economic security for farmers). We get updates from the farm every week and look forward to the new surprises of eating with the season. Highly recommend.

Staying on the main thorofare and avoiding non guided excursions towards the roofs edges is a good plan, if you do feel the need to venture, keep watch where your planting your feet. Flower beds sit snug in close proximity to the ground and are closely huddled together leaving them exposed for damage from a slight of step. The Greens family is fully represented, a Ware Rabbits dream come true, I gravitated immediately to the leeks, how I love them so. We purchased many items from the farmstand tgat had little or nothing to do with greens. Sourdough bread, hot sauce, honey, carrots and more all came home with me and will all work their way on to my Sunday menu.

Regardless if I buy anything, I just love walking around the market looking at all the fresh, colorful produce, thinking of what delicious dishes could be made from the plethora of ingredients. Many top restaurants in the city book directly with vendors here, which says something about the quality of the products. Still open Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat. Usually the most vendors on Saturday I think.
