He knows what he's doing. Anyone who's Dominican knows that we are born and we are on a salon chair the week after with heat on our baby hairs - the damage that comes with that constant activity is almost inherent in our genes. It is likely that we have someone close to us that does hair, or a few people. Many of us have ethnic hair and many of us will be exceptionally selective about who puts their hands on our head. I was careful about who had done my highlights and they made a terrible mistake a year prior, and here I am with Salvatore, a deeply traditional Italian man who has been doing hair for many, many years, and he made me feel safe. I had been terrified, and the experience was spiritual. He sat down with me eye-to-eye before we even started and we had the most serious conversation about my hair and its condition before even inspecting it. To me, these things matter. Then he went to work with his assistant and covered the highlights section by section, working diligently and quickly rinsing out the parts where hair was breaking. I don't need to get into more detail, but Salvatore is a top professional with a guaranteed space in stylist heaven, and I am eternally grateful for him saving my hair.

I had never been, however it is local to my house and when I called to ask about their updo services they assured me I'd be in good hands. I described what I wanted to the receptionist when making the appointment, explained I have naturally curly hair and would like my natural texture incorporated into the style. She told me no problem. I showed up to the appointment with my hair washed and styled in my natural texture per the receptionists instructions. I was booked with the owner of the salon. I showed her a reference photo, my hair was dry, down, and had product in it, ready to be styled into a "messy" curly updo. I wanted my natural hair maintained in the updo as it was June, humid, and heat does not agree with my hair in those conditions (frizz, styles don't hold, etc.). I recall being one of her first clients of the day, she was an older woman and was very nice. However she did not do my hair how I asked at all. She showed up a few minutes late to our appointment, her staff offered me coffee/water while I waited which was nice. I showed her the photo, and she almost immediately began dragging a brush through my hair brushing out my natural texture. I was stunned. She's the professional, not me so I didn't speak up, this was a mistake. I ended up with a very tight and polished updo with no trace of my natural curls. The entire appointment took less than an hour. She was kind enough to use the decorative pins I had brought, but my hair was not at all like the photo I showed her. I was extremely disappointed and upset. Due to the high stress and tight timeline of the day (my engagement party) I simply didn't have time to speak my mind and let her try and redo it. To manipulate my hair back to the original state would have required a full wash to remove all the hairspray and product, restyling with heat, unpinning, and I was already stretched thin on time as she was late to the appointment to begin with. I paid, tipped, and nearly cried when I got into my car. When I look at the professional photos from that day I literally cringe. My hair was pinned so tightly that it wasn't something that I could attempt to fix myself without making it worse, and again I didn't have the time. Since she used heat on the 2 face framing pieces in the front they immediately frizzed up, and uncurled creating an awkward shape that I ended up pushing behind my ears all day. I will attach the reference photo and the final product below. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I advise anyone interested in special event styles to do a trial here first. Or skip this salon all together. My maid of honor paid for my hair as a gift for the party, and looking back I wish I would have just done it myself, or spoke up the second she dragged a brush through my natural hair and told her to stop. I hate looking at the photos of myself from that day. I look like I have a slick back in the front facing photos and from the side the updo created an awkward shape on the back of my head. I take full accountability for not speaking up during the appointment. However I do think some responsibility falls on the woman who did my hair. I told her when I sat down that my natural texture with a few enhancements was what I was looking for. I have had updos before where the stylist will curl the pieces sticking out to enhance them. She briefly glanced at the photo and immediately began brushing my hair. Which if you have curly hair you know creates a poofy poodle like texture that requires a wash and restyle to get back to normal. It felt like she did what she thought would look best instead of doing what I asked. Extremely disappointing.

Don't get me wrong the salon itself and the energy and the people working there are great but I am not the type of person to sit there and complain about the 4 hours of work someone had just done and was seemingly so proud of (as i believe most people can agree they would also bite their tongue in a situation like this) I would have said something had I known sooner than after the blowout, but when I'm sitting in a salon chair with no mirror in front of me for hours while 2 rounds of bleach are going on my head and I had no idea what it looked like the whole process what else am I meant to do but trust the stylist. So it wasn't until AFTER the blowout that I realized this was NOT AT ALL the color I had asked for. My daughter and I went to the Sayville shop on June 14 and had a trial hair and makeup session with Gina, our Bridal Artist. The morning of the wedding Gina arrived with 3 Assistant Artists and after setting up they began working on the bridal party. While Gina was doing my daughter's hair she asked about the gratuity envelopes. House of Makeup provided me with a Gratuity Guide which has very specific instructions regarding the gratuities. They require a 20% gratuity per service and their gratuity directions specify: "1 envelope for the Bridal Artist and 1 envelope for the Assisting Artists, the Head, Bridal Artist on-site will distribute the Bridal Party service envelope evenly amongst the assisting staff". After giving Gina the 2 envelopes, I had to leave the Bridal Party Suite to attend to the flowers, a few minutes later my daughter called me and told me that Gina stopped working on her hair and that I needed to return to the Bridal Party Suite asap. I told my daughter to tell Gina to continue to work on her hair and I would return shortly. My husband and I went to the Bridal Party Suite and asked Gina what the problem was, she said the $600 tip was insufficient. I asked how that could be since I gave a 20 % tip. Our total bill was $3,000.00 (Gina did the bride and MOB total $750. 20% tip = $150.00, Assistants did MOG and 7 girls total $1,650. 20 % tip = $330.00, Assistant Alicia 6 additional hours for touch up total $600. 20% tip = $120.00) Total Tip $600.00. I asked Gina what the tip should be and she could not tell me. She just kept saying the tip is not sufficient. It was unprofessional of her to stop working on my daughter's hair. This totally stressed my daughter and me out. I explained to her how I calculated the tip and she said she has no idea what they charge for the services. I feel she was hustling me for a bigger tip. Her behavior was unprofessional and unwarranted and the anxiety she created was not appreciated. She never did apologize for her mistake. I would recommend using a more professional company, btw they are terrible at returning phone calls.

Crissy and her team are all very warm and attentive. I had Bobby do my makeup for my cousins wedding and he was amazing too!
