On a 90 degree day in Layton, we swung by Hokulia to pick up a few cups of shave ice. As we walked…read moreup to the truck, we saw a sign that stated that they were out of condensed cream and when I ordered their "short board" size, I was told that they were out of the small cups. We ordered their classic combinations - tigers blood and blue hawaii with coconut ice cream on one and kiwi, lime, and apple with mango sorbet on the other one. Our treats were made quickly and although they had a few seats there, we decided to take it to go. When I dug in, I realized that the ice cream was haphazardly scooped in an uneven fashion and it was vanilla ice cream and not the coconut that I'd ordered and which was written on the side of the cup. As the ice melted, I sipped a little of the syrup and it tasted very artificial. Having had my share of Hawaiian shave ice on Oahu, I was hoping for a little reminder of that experience here. Unfortunately the lack of snow caps, syrup flavor, and incorrect ice cream didn't do it for me. I tried to call back to see if I could get the ice cream issue corrected but the listed number went straight to voicemail. I'll pass on this one next time.

It's hard not to compare Karie Anne's--which has been appearing in Utah after franchising from…read moreIdaho-- to established local Italian Ice and Frozen Custard brand Zeppe's. Especially so when KA's prices are higher, texture less smooth, and some flavors weaker. Kudos to KA for a welcoming grand opening event and hustling the buzz on local social media. We went for the large (16 oz) Gelati which lets you choose two flavors of Italian ice, one for each layer, and one among two or three frozen yogurt flavors to be 'sandwiched' between them. The vanilla frozen yogurt was flavorful and creamy, and possibly a slightly larger ratio of yogurt to ice than Zeppe's. This is hard to say because the portioning ratio between our first two cups varied quite a bit. Yet it is really the not-quite-as-smooth texture of the Italian Ice, as well as the flavor with not as much "pop" nor "punch" on the whole that left us a bit disappointed. The Mango and Peach flavors were reasonably flavorful enough, though they tasted more sweet than tangy. The Piña Colada and Tiger's Blood flavors were noticeably weak in coconutty flavor. Not a bad treat, mind you, yet when a 16-oz KA Gelati runs $8.50 (not including extra if you add a topping like caramel), and Zeppe's 'Gelatas' are $6.55 for the same size, I'm not exactly sure the differentiating advantage. We hit Zeppe's after our Karie Anne's hot-sweaty-sunshine food truck visit was fresh in our minds, and we thought the Z location has more room; more comfortable and quantity of inside and outdoor seating; bigger menu; better prices; smoother Italian Ice texture; more flavors; stronger-brighter flavors; and more seasonal specials -- leaving us thinking that we'll probably not visit KA's nearly as much. Neither brand's retail space is designed to put the visual spectacle of choosing among colorful iced desserts on sale like a real Italian gelateria, but that's a lesser visit-experience quibble.

I am so glad there is a location much closer to me! We went the Logan location all the time when we…read morelived there. I'm obsessed with Karie Anne's. The Italian ice is so soft it melts in your mouth. The parking lot is blocked off so cars cannot get close to the seating. There is also a porta potty. I'll be back soon!
