Stopped by Little Donkey Downtown and had an amazing experience. I ordered the brisket burrito bowl and the chicken quesadillas, and both were absolutely delicious. The brisket was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, while the chicken quesadillas were loaded with filling and had the perfect crispy texture. The food came out fresh and hot, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was welcoming. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was just right. It's important to preface this review by saying I'm from Los Angeles, and we are known for GREAT Mexican food! So I'm going to show a little grace with this review. I was in Montgomery dropping my daughter off at college, and someone recommended Little Donkey. We actually went twice during our visit, and both times the service was great. I ordered the fried chicken taco, smoked beef brisket taco, Gulf shrimp taco, and catfish taco. I enjoyed most of the tacos, especially the fried chicken, shrimp, and catfish. The smoked beef brisket was the only miss for me because it was pretty dry. Now...the rice and beans. This is where my L.A. taste buds kicked in. The rice wasn't the flavorful Spanish/Mexican rice I'm used to back home, and both the rice and beans were pretty bland. I also ordered a top-shelf margarita, but you could barely taste the liquor. They have a sign posted stating that their drinks contain 1.25 oz of liquor, which I quickly learned seems to be pretty common around Montgomery. Definitely different from what I'm used to in L.A.! The chips and salsa, though? Really good! The chips were fresh and crunchy, and the salsa tasted fresh. We liked them so much we ended up ordering two orders. Overall, Little Donkey was a nice spot. The restaurant was clean and the service was consistently good. While the Mexican food is definitely different from what I'm accustomed to in Los Angeles, there were still several things we enjoyed enough to come back a second time during our trip. read more

This Little Donkey is the downtown Montgomery, Alabama location. I met a client here for lunch. Our server was friendly and professional and enhanced our overall experience. The menu was what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant (nothing wrong with that). I went with a burrito and it was pretty good. I will give it four stars. read more

The best thing on the menu is adobada & fried chicken. Everything else is pretty bland. Cheese dip is way too thick, break about a dozen chips before you get a scoop. Pretty pricy if you aren't going on a day that has specials that's for sure. Service was pretty decent, and the managers really are dedicated to making sure you enjoy everything. However even though I took one bite of two of my three tacos, not liking it, still got charged Even after saying it was bland as well. The restaurant itself is pretty dope though, you should at least eat here once for the experience. It's clean, the bathrooms are questionable but it's downtown ya know? Scenery is great with some drinks. Love the indoors and outdoors. Food is ok. Tacos were falling apart. it was soaked on the plate. Every time I tried to take a bite it was falling apart in my hand. Probably place the tacos on a TACO HOLDER. Service could be better. Mentioned shrimp were out then came back 15 mins later with shrimp back on the menu. Confusing. Changed my entire order. I'm Not sure why this place doesn't have a good reviews. Came in for dinner with a group of 6. Our service was quick and friendly. Very attentive. They have a huge outside patio that would be great to eat on on a beautiful day. The inside has a big bar too and many tables. I started with the chips and queso, that was a pretty traditional cheese dip. I ordered the taco plate for dinner. I got 1 steak taco and 1 carnitas taco - both were amazing. It came with a side or rice and either black or pinto beans. I also ordered a side of Mexican street corn. It was okay, needed a bit more mayo in there. Overall good experience. read more

I stopped for lunch on a Taco Tuesday in May. I had the El Pastor and Steak tacos. The El Pastor with the roasted pork with the pineapple was my favorite. The steak taco was good but I had two strips of steak about four inches long by about two inches wide. I tried to eat the steak and it pulled away from the taco. I ended up cutting the steak into pieces and eating each bite with a bite of the torn up taco. Not the lunch you want when entertaining a guest. Food was still great tasting. Service was really good. We ate on the covered patio and it was great outside. I would recommend this place based on that alone. Never thought I would eat outside on a patio in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, 20 years ago. While visiting the Legacy museum, we stopped for Mexican food across the street. We were served by a beautiful young lady with real EMERALD GREEN EYES. Being very hungry, we ordered almost everything and everything was really good. From chips and salsa to wings and salads. My favorite was the fajitas. Big portions looked amazing and extremely tasty. This place is SOOOOO GOOOOD! As a Latina, I'm pretty picky but their queso is easily the yummiest one I've ever had. Their top shelf margarita was like juice (beware) and the street tacos, while on the larger size are amazing. Flour tortillas are made in house. I had smoked chicken and carnitas. They are a little light on the green salsa so order extra and be sure to ask for salt if you're like me and like to taste the salt. Taco Tuesday is half off so def come!! We came during a conference and had a party of 30 (20 adults, 10 kids) with no reservations and they accommodated us and created seating with no problem. The food was delicious. Food: Chicken Fajitas were seasoned but dry. Salsa was comparable to runny ketchup. Rice had turned into mush but was still served. Margaritas were good. Service: Was sat and waited 12 mins to get our drink orders taken. Had to flag down wait staff for anything. Went back for a second try: Seated quickly, but never waited on. Only a few tables inside, yet I was sat shoulder to shoulder with a stranger. The same plus-sized white gal with brown hair who sat me, stood between my and my random new booth mate's tables and rubbed her "lil donkey" against me more than once without a single apology. The menu she put on the table was sticky, which should've been the first warning sign. I waited 20 minutes with no greeting, no drink order, nothing. At one point, the same gal's phone started ringing under all her papers on a booth next to me that she was using as a desk, she slugged herself over to grab it before going right back to whatever she was doing instead of helping customers. I am so sad! Hasn't even been a year and the downward spiral has begun. The food is almost identical to the Eastchase location now, cold and tasteless below average at best. There was a guy there in the beginning he has since either left or doesn't come in as much. I hope he is aware that in his absence the place is lacking. A different manager showed up about 6-8 weeks ago and honestly the day she appeared that place began to crash even the ambiance seemed to change among the workers. People Skills are at a minimum. High turnover with the servers. The kitchen manager is rude. Ordered catfish came out within 2min so clearly NOT fresh and it wasn't. Soggy and COLD. 15m later the real deal hot and fresh came out only to have the kitchen mgr slam the plate down in front of me and walk away. Ambience was great and we were excited to eat here after a trip to the legacy museum. However the food was overly Americanized and unflavored. We ordered the smoked chicken tacos - terrible, chicken enchiladas -terrible, and kids fried chicken with fries - very tasty. I also had the NY Whiskey Sour which was good. Other tables that ordered after us were getting their food. No apology till we ask for an adjustment due to cold food and poor service. We understood that they had a party outside and understaffed. The food was fresh and had flavor. The menu was varied. The service was friendly and fast. The staff greeted us and thanked us for coming as we left. There's a modern flair that we liked very much. I travel for work and eat at restaurants almost everyday and used to be a server for 3 years so when i say this i mean it, not only was the service some of the worst service i have ever received, as in meals out before drinks, misunderstanding of what is on the menu of the restaurant they work at, but right at the end of my meal i saw a chewed piece of gum on my plate after i moved a bowl of refried beans out of the way. sadly i had already almost eaten all of it and felt sick to my stomach for the rest of the night. knowing restaurant health code, something like this can get a business in serious trouble or worse put out of business. the food was taken off my bill but that does not make up for the disgusting act of serving one of your customers something covered in another persons spit. in short, i would never eat at this restaurant unless you like the mystery of whether you will get your drinks or food first or your plate will be infested with someone else's DNA. read more
