He was very excited to get something from this toy store as it's a really neat store. This time however my son walked to the desk for the magnets without me. He is a melanated little kiddo, I'm looking at a $45 board game and I hear the woman at the desk say to him "oh no those need to stay up here because they are expensive" when my son is trying to excitedly show me they had these spek magnets we already have sets of at home. He's goes "yeah, look there's gold and rainbow!" I say awesome let's get both the woman interupts again and says "oh you should probably get one there a lot of money" I go "how much are they?" She says "$30" I say as my son looking disappointed putting one back "no baby get both that's not something you have to worry about, I'm going to get some of the other ones to" I say with other items in my hand. This woman was clearly profiling my child that is not white. She made assumptions. We kept it nice at the counter and my kiddo shared about his chickens and animals like he does at home and he's still to young to notice racism. But the palisades openly shows a flag with the words "all are welcome here."

That said, I don't know their story, if they had a bad day, or if they just were not loving working at a toy shop on a busy weekend. That said, the prices are a TOUCH on the high side but honestly that is to be expected in a tourist area. I'm hoping that the cheerful workers return but honestly, I get it. Just the day before this happened, my best friend and I spent over $100 there. The reason I wanted to look at the giant cheese squishy was because I'd already bought the mini version before, and it honestly didn't live up to how it was advertised. It wasn't what I expected at all, and since the store doesn't allow returns, I was stuck with something I regretted buying. I didn't want to make the same mistake again. Since there weren't any display samples, we carefully opened the giant one just to see what it was actually like. We weren't trying to steal it or damage it--we were planning to put it back and were deciding whether it was worth buying. Instead, the owner immediately started yelling at us and made us feel like we were about to get kicked out. It was embarrassing and completely unnecessary. If you're charging premium prices and don't allow returns, customers should at least be able to see what they're buying before spending their money. I used to enjoy shopping here, but after this experience, I'm honestly not sure I'll be spending my money here again. AND YES, what I did was wrong but I apologized and walked out...
