This little free library book box seems to be brand new. At least it's in excellent condition…read more Apparently, it's run by a Girl Scout Troop. They have done a fantastic job. The box is well stocked with both kids as well as adult books. Both hardcover and paperback. On the front of the book box are some useful stickers. One is a suicide prevention Lifeline sticker--excellent. There's also a funny little note on the front that says what are you waiting for? Open me. All in all a fantastic little free library book box. Well done Girl Scouts.

Subsequently (as I have found in most cases that children do not drive) it was more than a bit of a let down to find one after another that had few adult titles. Because if Book Boxes only have children's titles, it almost entirely removes the parent's desire to return to the locale on their own. Parent's are readers too! (Steps off soapbox) This locale was mostly children's books as well, but was also really tiny. As one of the more mini locations I've seen they should either make it lower to the ground (for the chillins) or larger so it can house more than a handful of books for both parents and kids. While it was really cute, and did seem well taken care of, it just didn't seem very practical sadly.

this bright yellow framed, beige little library is literally crammed with fiction and children's…read morebooks. books are falling out or are they jumping? when i opened the door. read: "Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal" (Aviva Chomsky) -when Europeans came to America in the 1800's, there were no laws to dissuade them. few were questioned & detained at Ellis island. . -when Asians & South Americans came, laws were passed to make entry legal only if documents were obtained. as they couldn't get them as easily as Europeans, non European presence in the U.S. became "illegal". -the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 between Mexico & the U.S. allowed Mexican citizens in the newly U.S. acquired lands to become U.S. citizens. -historically, Mexicans and Latin Americans could cross the U.S.-Mexico freely. laws later changed to require documents. unable to obtain same, the former went "undocumented", i.e. illegal aliens. not eligible for jobs. *seasonal farmworkers allowed into california. -meatpackers, farmers still recruited the undocumented, paying them less. -in 2010, ICE changed it's criteria for arresting "illegals" to include non criminal activity such as entering the US without a permit. this was done to fulfill their quota. -soon after, US laws were passed to hold illegal entrants in prison, put them on trial, then deport them. laws supported by the private prison industry and U.S. politicians who wanted prisons built in their towns to create jobs... author's solution: decriminalize illegality. argument: since illegality was deliberately created to make Mexican labor cheap & deportable, reversing the law isn't unrealistic. the law hasn't deter the historical migration of Mexican and Latin workers to the U.S. it should be dismantled.

this faded brown library (#23040) is overflowing with adult nonfiction and fictions and a few…read morechildren's books.the library is on the side of the house, not in front. read: "Frindle" (Andrew Clements) -*story is fictional in all aspects. reads like an historical reenactment. -Nick wasn't a troublemaker per se. he just wanted to disrupt teachers by doing stunts or asking questions to delay teaching. -Nick created the word "frindle" to describe a pen. he lobbied his friends to use it in school and around town. Mrs. Granger forbade the use of the word and gave anyone using it an after school writing assignment. -the students continue to use it. parents began complaining about their sons & daughters being punished. -Nick learns to be rebellious without triggering punishment. -Nick is rewarded with 'frindle" eventually being included in a dictionary. he gets royalties from commercial usage of "Frindle"-a disney "feel good" ending. book was used in some elementary schools.

Livermore (beyond the Fairy home and spooky themed LFL) was almost entirely a disappointment in the type of books the honey and I like to read. This location held an Encyclopedia Brown book, which was my favorite young detective series when I was a kid (next to Nancy Drew of course) and a wonderful selection of young adult and adult novels. It was so refreshing to end the day on a Book Box not chock full of cheap children's titles and even though the wording on the box needed some love, sometimes something super disreputable boxes (as we found in another Little Free Library) can hold amazing things. I decided this last weekend that we needed to do a few LFL's in the East Bay. We're never there, so we made a day of it, and this was our first up! It had the cutest Elf Home at the bottom, complete with mini birdhouse, sign post, and mailbox! This locale had a great selection of teens books as well as a few fiction novels thrown in for good measure, looking back it was great to see such a good mix, because most of the boxes later in the day were all children's books! Just thinking of how much love and attention went and goes into keeping it up makes me smile! Mowing the lawn must be so difficult - I hope that Elf helps out! Yay Little Free Library!
