But instead what I found, Was a park fit for fairies! The area was once privately owned. But they've donated the land. The well kept grounds, I'd describe, As nothing less than grand! There's many paths to wander, And little gardens to see. There's even a makeshift playground Made from the trunks of trees! Such an adorable little park, In the middle of the city. Following the street address will lead you to a short dead end road (Dixie). From here, the preserve is accessed at the very end and is unmarked until you get close, where you'll see a wildlife sanctuary sign as well as the standard Atlanta city park rules sign. There is limited parking here. However, the preserve can be accessed from several other streets and one large parking lot located behind the Dekalb Human Services Complex at the SW intersection of Warren St. and Hosea Williams Dr. Look for the parking lot access road off the one-way street coming from Warren St. It's behind the Dekalb Community Services Kirkwood Center building. That parking lot accesses a trail into a separate section of the preserve. The trail connects to the main property. You can also access the preserve at a number of trail points on various streets surrounding the preserve but you'll have to park on the street. Google maps is a pretty accurate guide. I'd go for the parking lot or Dixie St. Now that you're on the property, you'll find a community garden, a picnic area and a bunch of interconnected trails that go off into the property. The garden and picnic area are located near the Dixie St entrance. There's not much else here except walking paths, tree, mosquitoes and unfortunately, still a lot of garbage (I understand the garbage situation is getting better through efforts by the city and community). The trails are a nice walk but I think it might be better during colder months when it isn't so muggy and the bugs aren't so plentiful. Mind you, it rained heavily the day before I came here, so that didn't help.

What Kirkwood has done with this property, transforming a once nasty dumping ground into a tiny secret garden and lovely forest with trails and a creek is nothing short of miraculous. There is a raised garden with labels on all the plants, a frog pond, and then the park descends onto thick woods with trails and wood swings and mulch paths. At the top of the hill is a small but adequate grassy field, perfect for tossing a ball with the fido. The only thing that I did not enjoy, is the home directly in front of the garden has several large dogs that are kept in a very small pen, who bark their heads off at anyone or anything. I feel really bad for them, to be penned up like that. And I think it may keep dog lovers a little cautious, since it does seem to upset my beasts. . .but then wind seems to upset my beasts, so I can't really get too judgy. I only ask that users pick up after your dog. Leaving a steaming pile in the middle of the trail is not cool!

The railroad tracks that the depot sits on is known as The Western & Atlantic Railroad which was built by the state of Georgia in 1836 at a reportedly cost of 5 million dollars (125 million in today's money.) It is the building of this 138 miles rail tracks that really put Atlanta on the map... If you're a Walking Dead Fan then you know about Terminus...well that was the name originally given to the city of Atlanta. Terminus means "the end point" which was what Atlanta was at the time. The "end of the line" for W&A railroad. Most historians believe that the "end point" probably is where the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot is in downtown Atlanta. (if you're feeling extra history-ish you can go see the stone marker that marked the spot of "the end" at Underground Atlanta. It's known as The Atlanta Zero Mile post.) The Kennesaw Train Depot was restored to its former glory in 2001 at a cost of $150,000 according of their website. It now is a museum and an event venue. There is also a small park next to it known as Depot Park with a small play ground, an outdoor museum narrating the great locomotive chase of the civil war and a pedestrian underpass. In front of the museum there is a tall lamp clock dedicated to city council member Jerry Worthan for his 20 years of service to the city of Kennesaw. Across the street there is the Southern Museum of Civil WAr Locomotive History Museum that houses the famous locomotive "The General". It's a great place to visit for any Civil war history buff....hope you'll check it out.

The layout is fun and the park itself is beautiful, especially in the winter when the leaves are thin and you can actually see the baskets through the trees. That said, the course could really benefit from clearer signage. Several pads weren't well marked, and we even had to skip a hole because we couldn't figure out where it started or ended. Since we only had time to play about half the course, we found ourselves spending more minutes navigating than throwing. I can't imagine how tough it must be in the summer when everything is fully leafed out -- it's probably like searching for a needle in a haystack. Still, it's a solid course in a great park, and with better markings it could easily be a five‑star experience.

I had no idea this was an annual thing and am happy that the city of Dunwoody does this and am definitely looking forward to next year's lights. While there were a ton of people, there was plenty of parking and I appreciated that there was an officer there to keep the flow of cars moving along. The park itself had several playgrounds and I loved they were padded. The kids had a blast on slides, swings and running around in the wide open space. The bathrooms were clean which always makes things even better. The kids had a blast playing with all the other kids and this is definitely a playground I'd come back to visit.

I would budget at least 2 hours here or as many as 3 if your kids are going to interact with the butterflies and the turtles and do the scavenger hunt as mine did. The indoor exhibit is small but charming and there are a few native species around. The downstairs education center also does a scavenger hunt every month which is really cool. They've done an amazing job of "gamifying" nature/science learning with their points based rewards system and natural objects exchange. We learned a lot about butterflies and caterpillars on our quest. The points thing goes a long way to motivating little ones that may be more skeptical about "learning" experiences and museums. But if you have kids who are more active and will walk, the variety of local trails contained within the nature center is quite nice. I would recommend coming here for adults without kids too for this reason. I heard there were little fairy houses somewhere too here but. I didn't see them. We saw the beaver, a variety of different birds including hawks and owls, and tons of other local animals. It was cool to see how intentional the design was of the outdoor sections and the map they give you at the gift shop/ticket counter is helpful. I also like how they have lots of play areas built in outside for kids to explore in a less structured way. They also have some nice picnic spots. Staff were friendly and helpful. "Feeding" (with the little sugar sticks) the butterflies was fantastic. Even on a hot summer day, I'm super glad we came and if it wasn't so far from where I lived I would attend more regularly/become a member.

It is impossible to visit during the summer months it is just wicked hot and no real place to escape once you start exploring. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather so we can visit again! There is a ton to see and plenty of space to get all the energy out. It really is a beautiful property and I love that it connects to the boardwalk with a walkway! The animals are cute! The beavers are a favorite in our house!
