I only ordered the chicken teriyaki after watching a few YouTube videos of Kenji Lopez Alt doing reviews of chicken teriyaki in Seattle. This was a disappointment. As another reviewer has also said, this is steamed chicken, no grill, no flavor, paired with Chinese medium grain rice also with no flavor. We came here hoping have bubble teas and maki rolls for sit down dining but this place is still take out only. I drank my coffee bubble tea. It was a little watery for my taste and the honey dew bubble tea tastes a little too artificial. It was definitely a mix or powder. The maki rolls were pretty nicely rolled and stayed together when I picked them up. I did like the taste and the combinations of items in the special maki rolls. We all enjoyed them. read more

My review will be only on the two items I've tried from here which are the sushi and boba milk tea. From other reviews I've read, these two are NOT accurate representations of Little Teriyaki since it is primarily an authentic Chinese restaurant (this is ironic because the name leads me to believe it would be Japanese). They basically have two menus: one is fast food -ish and catered to being very generic "Asian people food" and the other is Chinese. I wish I could have tried some items from the Chinese menu because the items from the former were disappointing. Sushi was subpar and the fish was not high quality. The fish were kind of chewy. The boba was chewy as well and not flavored or sweet. The milk tea tasted artificial. The interior is fairly small with a few seating areas. It seems to primarily be a take out kind of place as evident from the ordering counter being right in front of the door. For now I will leave my review at 3 stars since I don't feel comfortable giving it a lower rating since I haven't tried some of their better menu items. I hope to come back one day and write a more accurate review. read more

I've been eating at little teriyaki for several years ow so you can imagine my disgust when I ordered a maki lunch special with a philly roll that clearly had bad salmon. When I called the store the lady told me that the salmon was smoked. I then told her that smoked salmon and bad salmon are completely different and I know that difference. Then she offered to make me a new roll. I declined especially since my white rice had a funky mildew smell. I'll never eat there again. Ok, I've been meaning to create a Yelp account to review some of our local favorites and especially to review all of the wonderful places we tried on our honeymoon, but reading through these negative reviews of Little Teriyaki is what has finally prompted me to create my account and start reviewing. This place is special to us. It is an authentic Chinese restaurant that also offers American-Chinese favorites and even cheap sushi. Our kids love the American-Chinese items, which are fresher than most American-Chinese takeout/delivery restaurants with bigger portions and low prices. These come with more than enough to share. The sushi is not good, but it is cheap, so if you're after a basic roll like Cali or Philly, then you can get it cheap here. Considering this is a Chinese restaurant, it's nice that they offer sushi at all. They've got the basic American tastes covered: American-Chinese favorites and simple sushi. But if your tastes are beyond the basic American, you are in for one hell of a treat. Little Teriyaki's Chinese menu is HUGE, filled with authentic dishes that are bursting with unique flavors. When your mouth is tingling, almost numb, and you taste the nuanced spices and seasonings that dominate each dish, you've hit the jackpot. From the spicy lamb & vegetable soup (basically a hot pot in soup form, also available in beef) to the spicy lamb & cumin, from the pickled fish & vegetable soup (really strong flavors, excellent if you're not looking for something spicy) to the spicy chicken hot pot (served dry with a hot pot base sauce, also available in beef), there are so many delicious dishes to try on this menu. The employees know very little English, so refer to the numbers associated with the menu items. I think 35 is lamb & cumin, 36 is spicy lamb & vegetable soup. Every time I go to Newark to visit my bestie who is doing his Ph.D. at UDelaware, we get Little Teriyaki. Because it's awesome. Their tofu hotpot is everything. Their miso soup is also everything. I love this place. It is primarily an authentic Chinese Restuarant though, that also serves a bit of Americanized Japanese food, don't be fooled by the name. This place is run by Chinese people for Chinese people. The Japanese part of the menu is good, but nothing to write home about. The Chinese food, on the other hand (minus the little Americanized section), wow. Portions are big, quality is very good. If you order spicy stuff, it is very spicy! The sichuan items here taste pretty good, they include those numbing sichuan peppercorns, so you're in for a ride. Even the items from the more Americanized part of the menu taste a lot better here than most places. For example, I love the Singapore mei fun / rice noodles, a big heaping plate of rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp, squid, chicken, and pork; it had a lot more Chinese vegetables than most places, like baby bok choy, bean sprouts, and many others. One of my favorite items here if you're wanting something for just one person to eat, is the spicy beef noodle soup. The broth is incredibly flavorful, very spicy but with a subtle blend of aromatic spices, and then the deep flavors of dried red chili peppers, and the soup has big pieces of some sort of Chinese green cabbagey vegetable, and is garnished with cilantro. Be prepared though for some parts of the cow that are not widely consumed in Western cultures! The other items from the Chinese part of the menu, I generally want to share in a group of people. Everything I've ordered here has been good. There are a lot of items here that aren't on the menu in English. There's a board on the wall with Chinese, if you can read it, and they can make a lot of things that aren't listed there. Yeah! I highly recommend this place. It looks like a cheap takeout place from the outside, and it sort of is, in a sense, but it's also one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants in town! read more

I've had sushi from Little Teriyaki a few times, because they often have good specials and they deliver, which is convenient. However, it's overall just not great. Often comes delivered kind of warm (I guess this is part of delivery, but don't you have a cooler?), the sushi is typically flavorless, and sometimes too chewy. We waited for 1 hour outside their store for our order and we only ordered three dishes!! They don't seem to care at all. The first three times when we check with them, they just told us that they need like 15 more minutes. Only did they tell us that their chef forgot about our order when we waited for 45 minutes!! BTW, the dishes wasn't even worth the one-hour wait!! They seem to rush making those dishes and don't care what they taste like. They also forgot about our rice a couple of times now. Don't go here for the "Japanese" food. Go for the tantalizingly authentic Chinese (Szechuan) food. Braised beef noodle soup 紅燒牛肉麵 was to die for and as good as you can get in the area without going to Philly. Portions are huge too, and this girl had enough for 2 1/2 meals. （Ask for cilantro for some extra oomph). Bubble tea is unfortunately so-so but I only had the milk tea version so perhaps other flavors are better. If you need help with what to order point at what the Asian customers are eating and go with that or find out what dish that amazing smell is from and you probably won't go wrong. read more

This restaurant is in a block of stores with parking in the rear. The number of parking spaces doesn't look quite adequate but in downtown Newark, free parking anywhere is a blessing. Service was pretty good this afternoon and I didn't notice any serious problems in the upkeep of the place. However, the sushi was only about average, so perhaps I should try something else next time. Prices are reasonable though and closer to a typical Chinese sit-down restaurant than a high-end sushi place. read more

I just ate here for the first time after studying the reviews pretty closely. The positive reviews are much more accurate than the negative ones, I have to say. Griping about parking and a greasy sidewalk don't have anything to do with the food you walk away with. I had sushi and shrimp fried rice and it was as good as I've ever had. The Japanese food part of the menu is limited because there is simply not that much to Japanese food - they have teriyaki this and teriyaki that and great sushi, so that just about covers it in my mind. I have been tempted to try Little Teriyaki multiple times. What initially stopped me was the grease stained concrete that plagues their entrance/exits. I should have stayed away! Brought my crew in after a hard day of work.... We ended up ordering ramen, sushi, and teriyaki. I figured teriyaki is in the name... then I will order that from a menu that is so vast that that should be good. Nope! I could have made that at home. The sushi was average at best and the ramen broth tasted like it was out of a can. Service was terrible. We had to ask for drinks multiple times and after the crappy meal we didn't get a check until going up to the register. The person waiting on us was more interested in texting on their phone than doing their job. Oh, by the way, when other Asians came in the restaurant, they received exceptional service. Shrink your menu and choose something to get good at.... Hire someone to teach your employees about customer service. read more

I first ordered delivery from this place. It was the only one open as late as I needed. It took over an hour to get delivered. The sushi that was meant to be cold was warm. All the rolls had a lot of dressing on them. The fish was not fresh. Honesty, I'm not sure if most of it wasn't processed. Sushi is my favorite food, I eat it often. This wasn't sushi. But it get's better. One dseperate night, I resorted back to this place. In hopes regular rolls, more simple would be their saving grace. This time I was going to pick up. As I went in to place an order, I immediately saw the only sushi chef working at the time picking his nose.. yum. I turned around and left. Please. Everyone in there is polite and really nice, and since we're regulars they usually know what we're going to get before we order. This is the best Japanese place on campus. I have going here since it opened. The owner is a young guy from Flushing, Queens. I was really glad to hear there was a New Yorker running an Asian restaurant in Newark; I'm a New Yorker myself and have a bias when comes to NYC and food. Him and the staff are all very friendly and accommodating. The ambiance is simple, but modern and clean. They cook all the teriyaki dishes on a flat stove, such as what you see at japanese places in malls. They cook everything fresh. My favorite teriyaki is the chicken teriyaki. The lo mein option is pretty solid. The sushi is competitvely priced and good. They make the best spicy tuna roll! I get this roll so much every time I walk it the owner knows I want a spicy tuna roll. They also have appetizers. I've had the chicken wings; they taste like what you'd find in NYC at take out places, which is a good thing to me. The shrimp tempura is good, and the tempura sauce that comes with it tastes really good. I think they add little kick to the sauce. The smoothies are good as well. If you want good quality Japanese food that's reasonably priced, give this place a try. read more

We've been trying out the Chinese restaurants in town and this place stands as the clear favorite for best authentic Chinese food in Newark. Their Dry Pot simply cannot be beaten. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is simply a takeout place serving mediocre sushi and soggy teriyaki - the menu and signage offers little to indicate otherwise. Instead this is a hidden gem for incredibly flavorful real Chinese food.
