We enrolled him in 45/15 (evergreen), since the research I did shows that children retain education better when they don't have long breaks like summer. Thankfully I sold my home, moved back to west county, enrolled our son in Apple blossom and closed escrow. Phew! Lots of transition and apple blossom made the change of schools extremely non stressful! I was expecting what I went through at evergreen. What a blessing! His new teacher is AMAZING! I am thoroughly impressed with them in their entirety! The office staff are a joy and the principle makes a recognizable effort in getting to know each child and family. The computer lab just got fully updated and WOW! Bravo!! My son looks at learning as FUN, instead of a chore now and has long forgotten the terror he endured at evergreen. Thankfully he is resilient and strong! I am infinitely appreciative for this PUBLIC school! We played with the idea of putting him in Waldorf and in my opinion...This is a great balance. They even have a garden! Yayyy! And bravo again! Also, this school makes me WANT to get involved! My son's previous school had the complete opposite effect on me. Best kindergarten in Sonoma county! :)) I was even lucky enough to chaperone "the hungry catepillar" @ the Wells Fargo center. I am looking forward to the years that follow! :) Happy Monday! Time to get ready for school! :))

In many ways, SWSF served me better than higher education: the academics were rigorous in a way that required genuine thinking and original ideas, rather than the passive reproduction of others' thoughts. I learned how to collaborate with people different from myself, a necessary skill in any job. My teachers challenged my assumptions and helped me grow as a writer, mathematician, and scientist -- and as a human being. The arts and music, although no longer central to my daily life, broadened my perspective and made learning feel beautiful and meaningful. I am deeply grateful for this education and for all the paths it has allowed me to travel.

Clearly these families are upset…read morewith their experiences, but it's extremely misleading and incorrect to say that this wonderful school does not value diversity or is some kind of cult. I am a parent of a child there and I couldn't be happier. This school is oriented around Waldorf methods of education, which are all about honoring and supporting the diverse experiences and opportunities of a natural childhood for all children, and minimizing the homogenizing cultural effects of screens and media that are around us all the time. What's more diverse: 20 kids doing 10 different things outside in trees or fields, or 20 kids all talking about the same video game? Families are encouraged to embrace this approach to support their children's growth, and to avoid putting children in a position where they may feel tension or conflict between school and home. It can be distracting and disruptive for kids to come to school talking obsessively about superhero movies or video games when they can instead focus on the biodynamic farm on campus, sing songs, do handwork projects, learn to walk on stilts, or create games together using the natural materials around them. There's even a circus program available for kids. This approach inspires children to be creative, curious, and engaged with the world around them; to develop confidence and practical skills; to minimize peer pressure to conform with unhealthy standards of popular culture; and to avoid the proven negative impacts of screens and social media. Everyone in the class benefits when families are willing to make efforts to embrace this approach, regardless of the extent to which they are successful; and, while there is always some variation in the degree to which families adhere to these principles at home, the school and the school community warmly welcome all families who are choosing Waldorf methods for their children. For anyone who values the Waldorf approach in their child's school experience, there is no better place than Summerfield.

The preschool's web site attracted my attention when I first started considering preschool, and it was the first preschool we visited. We knew, just a few minutes into our visit, that we'd found the perfect place for our child. The program is play-based, focused on the children's interests, and the staff are very warm and engaging with the children. It's a small place (less than 30 children) and has a cozy quality since the preschool is within a former single family home. The food is great (all homemade, generally healthy, and lots of fresh veggies) and the art activities are a lot of fun for our child and have added color and texture to our home. Best of all, our child really loves the teachers and they seem to know her very well despite the fact that she's only there a couple of half days a week. The teachers are gentle and kind to children while helping them learn cool stuff, play, and experiment with various educational materials. It is wonderful to collect our child and to find her immersed in a fun activity, whether it's story time, meeting time, discussion, or outdoor play.

The 12 child / 4 teacher setup at the Hoen campus is pretty special, especially during Covid times. We made the decision to send our 4 year old back to school despite the risks of the virus, it was initially a hard choice to make, but knowing the numbers and the care that the school is taking to keep all the kids healthy. Heather has been incredibly thorough in not only creating a medically advised Covid protocol, she has also sent emails out answering all the questions parents have sent in, AND kept herself available to field others via email and phone. She has been just as careful in handling the air quality issues we have been dealing with (2020, you can just cool it now). I am blown away at the amount of time she spends communicating with parents about what's going on, what to expect, and how their kids are doing on a daily basis. Our son loves the school and feels very at ease there. After his first day when I was picking him up he was sad to leave and said, "Mama, can I come back here?" At his previous preschool he was always sad getting dropped off in the morning and it was brutal, so this was music to my ears. Then that same night as he was drifting off to sleep he said, "Mama, I love my new school." Totally unprompted on both accounts! We had looked at Mixed Greens online when he was just a baby, but never got around to going to an open house, and we missed the window to get him on the list. By a few strokes of luck we finally got a spot now that he's four, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have it. I know Mixed Greens (both campuses) on average has a two year waiting list, so don't dilly dally, go to an open house and get your kid in the list!!

The teachers have an impressive amount of child development experience while also having incredible personal skills. Our daughter loves going to school and we love seeing her grow in the environment! The owner/operator, Heather, is on her game. It is obvious as soon as you meet her that this is her life's work. The school runs more professionally than most schools I've seen. The school embodies Heather's vision that children learn through play, art, gardening, and music. Experts agree that early education has the most impact on a child's life when the days are filled with ample opportunities for young children to use and hear complex, interactive language; the curriculum supports a wide range of school-readiness goals that include social and emotional skills and active learning; the school encourages meaningful family involvement; and they have knowledgeable and well-qualified teachers. This is basically a description of Mixed Greens! Therefore, we are very thankful to be a part of the Mixed Greens family!

Something that I learned on a school tour and is a great example of how they teach is that the children learn to sew by hand in Kindergarten, and continue throughout the grades, and then when they learn about the industrial revolution, they get the chance to sew on machines. They get to embody and truly understand how that dramatically sped up the world. We began in 2020-- quite the intro! Now in our 3rd year, we are so excited about the leaders of the school and all the new ideas being shared and soon to be in action. We could not be happier or feel more blessed by the teachers our children have, and to be at school that still has blackboards, little to no tech in lower grades with a strong arts foundation and focus. It has strong parent engagement, and it is clear that our voices matter. Their is so much kindness and care oozing from every corner, as well as cherished traditions, rituals and special seasonal events in every grade knitting us all together as families. Each kid from TK- 3rd grade has an older "buddy" from a higher grade which bridges the divide even further and creates a real sense of connection. My 1st grader got to wave to an 8th grader and feel quite special that they got to spend time together. I have watched graduates of this school grow to be in their 20s and let me say, WOW. Inquisitive, critical thinking, sensitive, open minded, independent, creative, respectful, unique and wildly talented humans!
