The most memorable experience with Little Washington Winery's owners, Carl and Donna, was the intimate Winemaker's Dinner where we spent hours chatting about wine and food, the quirkiness and beauty of Little Washington, and just life in general. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed every wine tasting experience, especially the Triple Threat with cheese and chocolate, and have gained an incredible amount of knowledge on wine, charcuterie building and combining with various foods! Didn't know grapes actually do not go with wine! Our suite was lovely and so comfortable it was difficult to leave, especially with serene views of the mountains! The variety of wine is countrywide, many from female winemakers, from locals and made at Little Washington Winery. We bought a case with a variety, including their Meritage Masterpiece "George". The weekend getaway had plenty of wine tastings in a very welcoming home with plenty of areas to kick up the feet and relax. Carl's dinner recommendation to The Blue Door was also appreciated as we enjoyed the romantic outdoor dinner with beautiful flavorful entrees (especially the lamb chop!) and desserts! My husband and I visited Little Washington Winery in October 2020. The property is absolutely gorgeous! We enjoyed the picnic for 2 and both thoroughly enjoyed it! My husband is on the keto diet and they were able to make his sandwich into a bowl by request. I also tried the wine tasting, the Viognier was my favorite! For those who are concerned about Covid-19: there is ample seating outside so you can easily social distance! There is also tons of space for a blanket on the off chance that the Adirondack chairs are all being used! A beautiful setting in the heart of Virginia wine country. We took a wine "boot camp " course animated by Carl the owner and supported by his partner Donna. Well worth the trip. I landed at this place about 90 minutes before they closed one Saturday afternoon and was told, rather unenthusiastically, that it was too late to do a tasting. So I could not try the wine. Luckily I had a beer, just one, as asking for a second would have been frowned upon given the negative attitude of the people working there that day. I drank my beer - frankly I can't remember what it was - and left. Three stars for the view and the live band that day was entertaining. read more

(If you ever attend a session, make sure you bring a pen and notebook) The boot camp had several parts to it. Different types of wines, tastes, what wines to pair with what foods etc. After the session was over, we sampled some of the wines that they make. We signed up for "Vintners Table: Learning Lunch" and it was a pleasant surprise. We spent the afternoon learning new wine techniques and enjoyed numerous pairings. The pairings boasted a wide variety of flavors ranging from across the board and most of it locally sourced. You can tell the amount of planning that goes into each pairing as the wine is carefully selected before finding its match. Our lesson consisted of small sandwiches, cheeses and desserts. A couple of friends and I stopped here for as a treat post an 8-mile hike. It was exactly what we needed and the scenery was breathtaking. Aside from the beautiful views, the wine was equally tasty. I had the "Dirt Road Wine Club" flight -- can't remember the exact types of the flight, but were all very enjoyable. A very nice, small, & intimate place for wine tasting in Sperryville area. Unlike other wineries in the area, LWW provides wines from all over the world which is great. This place is perfect for people who wants to learn more about wine from all over the world rather enjoying a local in house wine. When we got there in September, some of their grapes failed to harvest due to the weather -- which is so unfortunate (climate change, ugh!). The Virginia George Wine was pretty good. My boyfriend really liked it. I did try Rare Petit Verdot Rose. It was dry yet fruity.The view from the patio is pretty amazing too! On the downside, a glass of wine here is a bit pricey compared to surrounding wineries. Consider getting a bottle. We enjoyed our visit. read more

Stopped in on our way to a little getaway on a Monday a week and a half ago. Wine tasting was great. Bought a bottle. And tasted their brews. Ended up buying a crowler of the coffee porter. BUT. What's most impressive is that we just cracked open that crowler 10 days later and it is fresh and perfectly bubbly - just as we remember it at the tasting. So good! Don't miss out on this gem. I found out about this winery via the review of Richard T., so my next time out Washington way, I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. The owners - Carl & Donna were holding forth. I joined the tasting in progress. I tried the following wines: Little Washington White "Mesmerized" Viognier (2009) - had notes of tart green Apples. A tasty refreshing wine! Little Washington Red "George": Had notes of currants and leather - not really a fan of this wine. And then we were onto the Dirt Roads Tour, where you get to sample wines from around the world. - Steel Chardonnay - from Brooklyn, NY. Had notes of mineral and slate. An unremarkable wine. - Sawtooth Gewürztraminer from Idaho. Not a fan of this wine. - Campo Grenache (Spain). Hints of dry raspberry - very interesting wine! - A Chambourcin named Shindig (2009) something or other. I believe it was made in Michigan. Also tasty. The winery is fairly new and appears to be a work in progress - meaning it looks like they have a few finishing touches still to be completed. The view from the deck is really nice. Carl and Donna were really very nice and entertaining. Currently, the grapes going into the two Little Washington Wines are not grown at Little Washington. I believe they stated the grapes that go into their wines come from Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery (Stafford, VA). As I recall, there was a $7.00 tasting fee. While I was there, I noted that there was no phone service on AT&T or Verizon - so don't expect to be able to check in! Overall, I had a nice time. read more

I've been here several times, including a wine 'boot camp', and was very happy with each visit. Wine, location, and service were great. They are also unique in that they sell wine from many different locations as part of their 'Dirt Road' club, and have a nice selection of wines from their own 7 acres of vines. They aren't 100% estate, but a good portion is. I give them credit for even serving out of state wines and putting them against their own vintages. That takes guts, or a lot of confidence in their product. They also seemed good about making sure members get wines according to their tasting preference. The wine boot camp is worth it, even if you're already familiar with wine in general. I thought my class went too long but other than that it was still a really nice event. Like me, the owner/wine maker isn't into sweet wines, so we saw eye-to-eye regarding how what a white should taste like. His 2013 Solstice was a Chardonnay that went thru malolactic, had an amazing oak nose, but only had a hint of butter. It's definitely one of the handful of oak Chardonnays I really like. The Meet Virginia Viognier was also really good; honeysuckle and a hint of butter, and it lacked the overpowering nose I've found in other Viogniers. For reds, his Que Syrah was my favorite. Very soft, and a nose I could only describe as woody; one of my favorite Syrahs anywhere. The 2013 George was also good, although it lacked the tannins I loved when I tried it earlier in the year. Definitely a light/medium body red with a light cherry palate. The U-Turn Cab Franc was so light I wouldn't have guessed it was a Franc. The out of state (and in one case, French) wines were also well selected. No point in me writing about them because in a week they'll have been switched out. Still, it's not often I get to try a 'real' Bordeaux at a Virginia winery. Warning - they have no signal here, but don't worry because they have free WiFi. read more

It was a great place to meet up with a group of friends outdoors. They were comfortable with us rearranging the Adirondacks to accommodate our group! We shared wine and sat on the lawn. The staff was friendly but not overly welcoming. Their selection of wines was large, but they were unfortunately out of many either made by them or locally. It started to rain and we were tempted to sit below the porch on the furniture, but it was unfortunately very dirty. Cute spot with a lot of potential, thinking maybe we caught them on an off day. read more

Nice visit to the winery and brewery yesterday. Had visited many years ago and wanted to see what was new. The beer flight was sub-par. Two of five we couldn't finish and their Amber, Brown and Porter tasted very similar and were served in flimsy plastic cups that get stuck in their flight paddle. I guess you shouldn't visit a winery for beer. Also some significant potholes in the driveway. We tried a flight of their wines and had a nice conversation with their staff. Apparently the wines are now made by Prince Michel, which is fine, but they seemed overpriced for what they were. They also carry a lot of other winery's wines, so its more like a wine shop than a winery. We wanted to visit the Skyline Vineyard Inn but had a hard time finding it...not a lot of signage. read more

On a road trip and decided to find a winery. Came across this one and we were so happy we stopped here. The couple that runs it is very sweet. We had a few flights and each had a glass, as well as a cheese plate. The wine was delicious. The scenery gorgeous. We had a wonderful time. Covid precautions included masks and outdoor dining. It wasn't crowded so we were able to social distance. Would highly recommend to anyone passing through the area. This is a super cute winery off the beaten trail with a perfect view! In the colder months you can still easily enjoy their back porch seating area thanks to the plush / fur lined blankets they offer as well as the two outdoor fire pits that crank out the heat. We attended the wine boot camp. Carl is a terrific host, storyteller and wine educator. I learned more about wine in two hours than I've known all my life. The winery property is magnificent. Although we didn't get to explore much of the grounds, it's easy to see their beauty. The tasting room is in the bottom of the main building and is easily accessible by a door from the parking lot. The building, which serves as a B&B in normal times, is spacious and features incredible views of the property and the mountains. If they open as a B&B again, we will definitely be booking a stay. read more

When going on weekend trips, doing a few wine tastings is almost always on my list of things to do. After reading some of the more recent reviews of this place, I was pretty excited to come here. During our visit, we sampled a handful of wines: whites, roses, and reds. Most were nothing to write home about (other than to say don't try X). I was pretty disappointed in the wines that this place made themselves. They were out of character from their named styles. Most of the stories that came along with each sample were very peculiar -- a few I definitely gave an involuntary facial reaction similar to a "what are you talking about?" thought -- such as when you *have* to call a wine a table wine versus a meritage (we learned a new word here) versus a blend or when you are "required" to give it a "unique name". Regardless of the weird stories, we all kept an open mind and continued trying their offerings. We were not planning on getting a glass of something we liked as the place was closing early that day, but if we had, the only options I would have considered were ones they imported from other countries. They did say that 2018 was a bad year for grapes, so maybe that's the reason for the disappointing flavors during our visit. read more

Carl and Donna go out of their way to welcome you to Little Washington Winery. We LOVED the Winestock Festival. We attended the very first one and this year went way beyond our expectations. It was so fun and there wasn't one wine we tasted we didn't like. Little Washington Winery's George is our very favorite Virginia Red. We enjoyed our bottle of Pioneer from Arizona. It's one of their wines on the Dirt Road Wine offerings. The bands and food trucks were excellent. Another fun part about going there over the years is to see all the improvements and remodeling they've done. The view of Old Rag is incredible and no matter the season or weather the view is spectacular. We didn't have a chance to check out their new inn but will on our next visit. We've been to nearly all wineries in the area, with exception of this one. We finally gave it a try and have to say they have an interesting concept of having you taste and compare their wines to wines from other vineyards around the world to compare how well this winery does with similar/same wines. Otium and some others used to do this more often and it's a nice concept, especially for those with little wine experience, it gives the taster something to compare to. The service we received was great! The young lady working the tasting counter was very helpful and knowledgeable, as well as friendly. The venue isn't very appealing, but it's comfy, especially the deck with fire pits. Judge for yourself what you think of the wines, we weren't too impressed, but we found one we liked. read more

We booked, through TravelZoo, a wine tasting class "Guess the $100 Bordeaux" for two. This property is located some two hours from DC. We arrived on time today (the date of the class), only to be informed that the class was cancelled. No phone call, or email was sent to inform us of this cancellation, allegedly because "not enough people had booked." This was my 3rd time at this class, bringing different friends & family. The location is beautiful, staff is so friendly but in the 90 minute class, the beginning 'how to taste wine', etc, for 60 minutes (I checked my watch), in my opinion, is entirely too long. There needs to be more time trying & discussing the wines with the food, cheeses & desserts than 30 minutes. The beginning dragged on & the pairing portion feels a bit rushed. read more

This past weekend was my second visit to Little Washington Winery. The first visit was their second day in business, Nov. 12, 2011 (also the day after my husband and I were married). It was a great way to start the first day of marriage. The winery has a few wines of their own. They also act like a mini wine shop offering hard to find wines from around the world. I tend to gravitate towards the "wine shop" wines they sell. Your tasting will consist of both their wines and the "wine shop" wines. They refer to their "wine shop" wines as The Dirt Road Wine Shop. You can also sign up for the Dirt Road Wine Club. This is something I keep thinking about and just need to bite the bullet to sign up already. Both times I've visited my party has gotten wine and some of the food they offer to enjoy on their deck. The deck, for us, has been a peaceful quiet space to enjoy the view. The winery is tucked away and if you're not paying attention you might drive past it. There is only one bathroom (at least that I know of) so sometimes a small line can form. The tasting house also looks like there are some unfinished painting/decorating projects here and there waiting attention. This isn't a big deal to me. It actually helps it feel more home like. (I've got projects that haven't been finished for 4yrs.) The winery offers a bootcamp that requires reservations. If you have a chance to take it, do. My mother and I enjoyed learning some new things in the class. It'll only take a few hours out of your day and you get to drink wine. Win, win! read more

I was NOT a wine drinker previous to this trip, I thought white wines would also be my drink of choice. I was WRONG! After my group did a living social deal for a friends birthday, I can now say I LOVE wine! Red in fact. The view is breathtaking...we took so many pictures here. The "bootcamp" was pretty much taking those like me, winery "first timers" on a lecture session about different pairings and selections. I almost thought there would be a test at the end.
