After our hike in Shenandoah National Park, we stopped by Glen Manor for a glass of wine as it is very close to the trails. When having wine here you get to enjoy the same stunning views as hiking in the national park. The scenery is truly breathtaking. The service we encountered was exceptional. The staff members are true wine experts and treat you like royalty. The wine itself was fantastic. It's worth noting to bring your own snacks or lunch as they don't offer food on-site, but they do allow you to bring your own. With a spacious patio and outdoor area, you can sit back, unwind, and fully absorb the incredible mountain views. This will be a post-hike tradition for me from now on! read more

Apparently they hate money? I understand business rules, but we offered to split ourselves into 2 different groups to abide by the party of 4 rule (that was previously a party of 5 or 6??) but oh my gawd you would have thought we walked in with cow sh*t on our shoes. Like half our group offered to go outside to allow for the other half to do a tasting but nope! May as well offered to light the place on fire free of charge. The individual at the counter sneered, called another woman who also made a ridiculous face who then told us we had to leave. We even offered to buy wine but that was also turned down lmao what an interesting business model View is nice but don't bother. ETA: the owner sent me a message stating they reported me to the local sheriff's office for threat of arson. Reading is crucial, y'all! I've been going to this winery since they opened and the wines just get better with each passing year. They still offer counter tastings, which are not only delicious but extremely informative...a full history of each wine and even pointing out the particular vineyard on the slope leading up to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and on the map. The view is of the western slope of Shenandoah National Park and you can even see (but not hear) cars on Skyline Drive in the distance. The prices seemed steep when I wrote my first review of this winery but now the prices are inline with other VA wineries. I can't think of a better getaway for a day - the winery is a comfortable drive from Northern VA, and very scenic. If you're coming from the south, on route 340, make sure to take the Bentonville Road route up to the winery (instead of driving nearly to Front Royal and taking the Browntown Road route). Browntown, by the way, is a picturesque Valley village - memories of The Waltons while driving through. read more

Thanks to a Travel + Leisure article, I stumbled upon this vineyard. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Glen Manor. Service is top-notch and everyone that works here is passionate about what they do and serving their customers. The wine is amazing - their Petit Verdot was my favorite. Visiting the vineyard will not disappoint. The grounds are stunning. I love that they offer such an intimate experience and limit the number of people visiting at any given time. It makes for a simple, yet memorable experience. I loved the peace & quiet. Cannot wait to return this fall when it cools off a bit. Tips: Reservations are a must. They do not allow visits without a reservation. Recommend a review of their website & then making a reservation request via email. They will request a credit card to hold your reservation. This is a top notch vineyard but not pretentious- another thing I loved. That said, you don't have to be dressed in your Sunday best but I would recommend upscale casual or similar. The outdoor tables have umbrellas to help shade from the sun but I'd still recommend sunscreen (in summer months) if you're fair skinned like me. Dogs are allowed by they must be leashed at all times and well-behaved. BYO food as they do not serve food. They served my wine in a glass versus plastic - greatly appreciated! In a world full of too many wineries producing meh wine and offering stuffy settings to consume it, Glen Manor is that breathe of fresh air, literally and figuratively. For starters, my girl Cassie runs the show and she does it in the most hospitable way. Always accommodating, never turns anyone away even during the busiest of busy days! Second, the ambiance. Picture says it all. Perched on a hill side facing their vineyards and blue ridge mountains, you couldn't ask for a better view! Lastly and most importantly, the wine. Where do I begin? The rose is delightful, the sauv is crisp and the petit manseng is the perfect semi sweet heavenly liquid that pairs quite well with your picnic basket items like olives, hummus and cheese. Kelly was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. She truly made this experience great. I tried the 2017 vin rouge and enjoyed it so much that I had to get two bottles! Additionally, Glen manor has high standards of covid precautions in place and I felt extremely safe and respected in this space. Unfortunately only the outside picnic area is open amidst these pandemic times but the bathroom inside is still available and cleaned after each use! If you are visiting Shenandoah National Park this is absolute must stop near the park in Front Royal. Glen Manor has a nice small tasting room and plenty of places outside to side and enjoy the beautiful view. The vibe is outdoorsy and relaxing. You will not encounter a bus full of drunk sorority sisters here. This is for adults who enjoy high quality wine. Jeff White (owner and winemaker) is a true farmer and his fruit comes from this 15ish acre farm with a perfect little hill. His wife Kelly can be found pouring wines in the tasting room. Unlike some Virginia wineries, Glen Manor will not present dozens of different wines. I believe Jeff only produces 5-6 wines in any given year. The result is a focus on quality. The wines are clean and complex, in a more European style. We tasted the: Sauvignon Blanc-Very crisp and bright with nice citrus and just a tad of minerality. Morales Rose-This rosé is made by blending Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, and Merlot. Its a dry rosé and I think a perfect hot summer evening wine. Vin Rouge-is their basic table wine blend that I think many would enjoy with pasta or pizza. I happen to like it by itself. This wine is dark and has coffee notes. St. Ruth-is a nuanced blend of Cab Frac, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Lots of complexity here, but its subtle. This is a take your time and enjoy the experience wine. It's artistic. Hodder Hill-the name of the slop where the vines are planted and the name of their Governor's Cup winning wine. This is a Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Petit Verdot mix focused on the Cab Sauv (67%). Stronger and more tannic than the St. Ruth, this is a lamb or steak wine to me. Wine is a 5 star for sure and the overall experience is too. Can't wait for another visit. GMV is a textbook example of how great vineyard management results in amazing wines. Out of about 100 wineries, they crack my top 5, both for wine and hospitably. A great stop just a few minutes from the entrance to Shenandoah park. The husband/wife owners are Kelly (who runs the tasting room) and Jeff (the wine maker). Kelly is super friendly and will regale you with the story of the family's 100 year history with the farm. Last time she literally ran down the road to return a credit card someone left behind. I've never met Jeff because he's always working the vines; it's a shame, because I'd love to hear about his time working at Jim Law's vineyard at Lindon. That's right - the wine maker spent 13 years working with Jim, so he knows his stuff. The reds: mostly Bordeaux styles, with different blends favoring different grapes. Everything was really good to excellent, and had a great nose. I LOVE the Cab Sav heavy 2012 Hodder Hill; excellent dark fruit palate. The 2012 Vin Rouge had a slight cherry flavor. But the best nose was the 2012 Cab Franc, which actually was a little fruity. This time around they were out of my favorite, the Merlot/Cab Franc heavy T Ruth. The whites: this time they only had a Sav Blanc and a Rose. They previously served one of my favorite Petit Mansengs anywhere but were sold out! As a red drinker I typically don't shed a tear over a lack of whites, but this was one I had been looking forward to. I usually don't bore people with geekiness about grape vines, but this place deserves special treatment. They have one of the best vineyard locations I've ever seen, right on the steep slopes of the Shenandoah. In fact, you can see the vineyard from Skyline drive! Many vines are over 20 years old, but the youngest are still 6 or 7 years. While they grow 14.5 acres, they drop about half their fruit to improve quality. GMV is a place for wine lovers who enjoy relaxing with a glass and enjoying the scenery. Since they don't allow groups of more than 6 people, you always get personal attention. But if you find something you like, get it - with small batches, it will likely be gone soon enough. read more

The reviews with 1 star regarding their policies around large groups are correct. And I understand having a policy that you enforce. However, what I didn't understand was both an employees and the owner's wife came up with 5 different reasons for this policy. Let's go through them now. 1. Covid 2. 120 year family history and policy of small groups. 3. Farmer on his porch who wants quiet. 4. Intimate service. 5. No space. I have been to this winery before and it was never an "intimate experience." They literally brought the wine out and left. Also, this winery is on acres and acres of vineyards that they own. Which they love to brag about under their tax shelter as such an old family business. Enforce your policy but don't lie and treat your turned away guests (who planned on buying multiple bottles of your wine) and then get visibly nervous as the wife's owner did (she was wringing her hands and shaking like a leaf) when we simply ask why 6 people is your policy. They clearly make exceptions based on who they want to serve. It's open to their whims. You are allowed to bring dogs, so I assume the dogs never bark or make noises to disturb the farmer on his porch. We won't be back which is a shame because it's clear they don't care as the same pairings of white boomer age couples will keep showing up to support their tax shelter and acres of wine on stolen land. Don't drive an hour to support such a rude business who lie to their guests. There are lots of great wineries around the area. read more

A group of friends visited Glen Manor this past Saturday for the first time. I'd heard good things about Glen Manor and it was a nice day out for a winery visit! We arrived mid-afternoon - a little after 2:00 pm. There were a couple of other folks tasting wine. We received a nice overview of the wines and the property by a very enthusiastic lady - who as I recall is married to the wine maker - Jeffrey. We tasted: 2014 Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Vin Rouge 2013 St. Ruth 2013 Hodder Hill 2013 Raepheus (Late Harvest Petit Manseng) We also got a small taste, sneak preview of an early harvest Petit Manseng - not yet bottled. All were nice wines in my opinion, but I especially enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc, the Vin Rouge, and the Raepheus. I don't normally drink much in the way of Petit Manning - but theirs was good enough that after the tasting - one of my friends went in with me to split a bottle of it. Jeffrey spent some time studying under legendary Virginia winemaker Jim Law at Linden Vineyards. As they described their wine making process and philosophy - it very much reminded me of the way Jim Law goes about his wine making... We then took our wine outside and sat in the grassy area out back, enjoyed the camaraderie, sunshine, and amazing view of Shenandoah National Park (the winery property directly abuts the western boundary of the park). The tasting room itself is a bit small, but very cozy, with lots of natural wood/wood tones. Definitely on the list to visit regularly in the future! read more

Upon arrival, my group of 5 were told we had to leave by a Glen Manor employee because they thought our group had 7 in it (and their policy is "6 guests max including DD's and minors"). The couple we sat next were folks we didn't know, so the employee apologized and told us we could stay. (At this time, we observed another group with 4 adults and 4 children and they were never approached). We had driven 60 miles from Herndon to visit Glen Manor for our 6th visit. Since it was my birthday, my brother and his son later surprised us as the 6th and 7th guests that we didn't think would make it. We asked management if this was ok since we were only using 4 chairs and being courteous towards other guests/employees and the owner's wife said it was ok. I signed up to buy 12 bottles (spending over $350) to join Glen Manor's wine club, oddly, we were told that we could not drink any of their bottles at their property, but would also have to buy additional bottles to be allowed to drink their wine on their property. The owner's wife kept telling me that they were trying to be polite by allowing the 7 of us to be there, even though we would have to sit into 2 separate groups outside. It had become quite clear that my group of 7 was unwelcome and I told Glen Manor staff that we were leaving and walked outside to pack my belongings to leave. While packing our belongings, an employee rushed out and insisted we leave immediately making false accusations of me breaking glass in their winery (AT NO POINT WAS ANY GLASS BROKEN IN THEIR WINERY) and several other customers could attest to this. After she walked back inside and as we were loading our cars to leave, a man aggressively approached us in the parking lot and attempted to further escalate the situation by continuously telling us to leave while our cars were started and we were clearly attempting to leave. There was no reason for him to approach us or block one of our two cars from leaving to tell us to leave. Apparently, this was Jeff, the owner and winemaker. A better solution would have been to let us know we couldn't stay since our group included a 7th person, let us make our purchases (or not), and leave as we had politely indicated we would. If you are ok with being treated this way, by all means, go to this vineyard. But please don't bring more than 6 guests. -Justin read more

I recently visited Glen Manor Vineyards and was quite impressed with their wine-tasting room and grounds, as well as their wines. First, the wine-tasting room and grounds - the tasting room is small, so understandably they limit groups to six persons or less. This is probably not a winery to have a group of kids, or your dozen friends to gather for a wine-tasting. Having said that, their building is beautiful- well-finished wood everywhere and a nice bar that can hold at least 10 or so persons. The grounds are very well-kept, and have an outstanding view from any direction you look, whether it be wooded hills, a planted field, a sloping valley, or nearby farms (which, incidentally, one is an adjacent bed & breakfast). Tables and chairs are spread out sporadically, and plenty of space for a blanket picnic. Again, it's a tighter arrangement than many vineyards that I've visited, and I think it was intentionally created that way to provide for a more exclusive setting. Next, the wines- they were very good. I had a tasting of all the available wines that day, eight total (they were all out of their rose). The petit manseng and vin rouge stuck out as exceptional wines (to me), but they were all very good, and I could especially see pairing some of them with a hearty steak or beefy pot roast. Their prices are not inexpensive- they were asking at least $9 per glass, and $25 to $70 per bottle. Having said that, if you are looking for a selection of very good wines, and a more exclusive setting, this may be the vineyard you will want to frequent. read more

I've visited Glen Manor several times. They have some of the better Virginia wine and the views are nice. This review is solely based on my most recent visit. During the pandemic, a lot of wineries are understandably open by appointment only. We called and left a VM to make an appointment. They called us back the following day, during which we scheduled a date and time to visit. We understood we had to be club members, which we planned on becoming during the visit, and were told of their new policies due to the pandemic. We specifically asked about their dog policy and the person we spoke with informed us we could bring our dog. Fast forward a couple of days...we drove 1.5 hours from DC to Glen Manor and arrived a few minutes after our reservation time. Upon exiting the car, the manager came up to us and informed us that they weren't allowing dogs on the premises. While the manager was apologetic, she claimed they had no way of contacting us to let us know of their policy. Given that the winery received our VM (in which we included our phone number) and called us back, suggests they had our phone number and could have contacted us to clarify their pet policy. There are a number of things that the manager could have done to try to remedy or ameliorate the situation. She could have offered us a discount on wine or given us a bottle for the trouble, but nothing was offered for the three hours we spent traveling to/from Glen Manor. We were planning on buying a case of wine and becoming members, but will look elsewhere now. To reiterate, we had no issues with the winery's policies. We take issue with their lack of communication and poor customer service. read more

While the wine tasting fee here doesn't include a free wine glass and there are fewer wines to taste, the overall quality is significantly higher. The wines are fabulous. And the staff do a great job of giving you personal attention and really explaining each wine and the process. Additionally, the property is gorgeous. It's large and sits in a little valley with a beautiful view of the mountains, just below Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park. There's several little wooden rocking chairs around the property where you can sit, enjoy a superb glass of wine, and take in the view. Contrary to a few coordinated negative reviews, do not be dissuaded from not seeking out this gem - you would do so by losing out on a great winery. All are welcome and all are treated with the same respect which we all deserve - wine lovers know no prejudice! My experience and my observed experiences of all guests over a few years by the way, has been nothing short of awesome - as has been other experienced reviewers many, many times over. Glen Manor is worth the drive for both the wine and the people. We were staying In Rileyville for our honeymoon and we took a chance on a Wednesday in October to venture out. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of Virginia wine and the friendly and welcoming folks at Glen Manor. Cassie was so sweet and was very knowledgeable as well as personable. And, when we mentioned we were short on a few unmentionables, we were gifted with something to get us through the next couple of days so we did not have to venture into the metropolis of Luray. For a winery in the Shehandoah Valley, this place is probably as good as it gets. My friends and I went in late Match and even then the views of Skyline Drive were by far the best we saw that day. There are scattered groups of tables and chairs outside of the main building to sit and enjoy the wine and view--bring some snacks, go on a nice day, and this is perfect. We were served a wine tasting by the wife of the farmer, and she was very knowledgable about their wines. Learning how the grapes are grown and about the history of the farm really added to the experience. After the tasting, we decided to get a bottle of the Hodder Hill, sit outside, and enjoy everything. The Hodder Hill has nice earthy tones and was quite drinkable. Definitely one of my favorites I had that day. Two or three more of their wines should be available in mid April, so that would be a great time to revisit! read more

We went here as part of our first wedding anniversary celebration, sat and drank some delicious wine (we opted to not do tasting and just got a half-bottle to share) and enjoyed the gorgeous serene scenery. We saw two black bears in the distance at the top of the vineyard near Skyline Drive and listened to a chorus of birds in the grasses around us. The staff greeted us with smiles, including a friendly labrador dog who came over to say hello to us. Bring a picnic and a book to read, buy a bottle of wine, and just unwind here. While out doing some vineyard visits we decided to give this one a try, since we heard good things from friends about it... Oh Boy we were glad we did! From the moment we pulled into the driveway we could tell it was special and not like many of the other wineries who don't put as much care and attention into their grounds. They have a beautiful entry way, driveway and the landscaping is incredible! Not sure if Kelly (her and her hubby own/run the place) does all the landscaping on her own, but she was doing some on the day we went. And even though she had other things going on, she spent a ton of time chatting with all the guests and explaining the entire history of the vineyard and her husband's family's ownership of the land and how the wines got their names. She also went into explaining how they all spend time each day protecting the grapes on the vines in various ways to ensure the best possible grape to turn into wine. That care and devotion to a perfect product extends into the wines they sell. They only had four available on the day we went and we instantly loved two of them. Prices are slightly more than other vineyards, but not too much higher and when you hear the entire story, you quickly understand why and are glad to help support this beautiful, local VA vineyard! The grounds are GORGOUES with views up the hills of their 200+ acres of land you can see up to the vineyards, on the sides of big hills, all the way up to Skyline Drive at the top of the mountain, which looks incredible from below! They offer plenty of outdoor seating, all with views facing these beautiful hills and they also have some limited indoor seating as well as a nice sized bar to hang out, sip and enjoy the conversation. Instead of crackers, Kelly makes INCREDIBLE homemade focaccia everyday which is cut into bite-sized pieces and put into bowls for the customers to clear their palates in between sips. The bread alone tastes INCREDIBLE! We were happy that she decided to share the recipe. She could and should sell this stuff! We look forward to coming back and bringing friends for another round!
