I want to like this place so much that I have been here three times. Always to one of their fun events, wine and Halloween candy pairing, a chocolate and wine pairing and the girl scout cookie and wine pairing. The events are fun and everyone is so very friendly. Three workers (one was the owner) came over to us during our tasting to chat with us and see how we were doing on our tasting and they were all so friendly and nice. The tasting room has a nice feel to it even with the soaring ceilings. They have a gas fireplace but sadly it wasn't going today even though it was a bit chilly in the room. Their dogs are sweet and roam around looking for a pet here and there. There is a refrigerator filled with meats and cheeses and some waters and juices for you to purchase. But alas, their wines are just not good. The two whites we tried today lacked any kind of flavor and the reds honestly bordered on vinegar. I could tell right away by the color and the smell of the cab franc that it was off and one sip proved that. I want to like this vineyard because they are so kind and they try so hard but they really need another winemaker. read more

What a lovely and chill vibe. Come one, come all to Magnolia Vineyards--including pets and kiddos (although if you have a 4-year old that isn't a fan of listening, like me, bring backup)! The space was very comfortable. We were welcomed and even had tables rearranged for our bigger party. The singer/ guitarist was very good. I purchased cheese and crackers to share. I also was able to get some somemore girlscout cookies to add to our snax. The sangria was really good. Both the red and white. Staff was very accomodating and friendly. Excellent place! I usually don't like white wines but the white wines here were wonderful--not too sweet and sit great on the palate. My main reason for going here was the in-house dogs. They're sweethearts and they go in and out of the building as they please. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, spaced far apart enough for social distancing. My boyfriend and i did the self-guided tasting, which was 6 wines for $10, about 1-2 oz of each (see picture). The tasting came with small cheese and chocolate samples. The staff here is so friendly and helpful. It's quite the charming place. They also gave us a sample of their sangria in addition to the tasting samples, and it was delicious! There's additional cheese, soda, water, and other snacks for purchase. We bought a block of the BellaVitano black pepper cheese, and they gave us a knife and plate to cut it up and eat it. I've seen the sign for Magnolia Vineyards on U.S. 211 in Amissville, VA - many times - but never stopped in to check it out - until recently. It was a Saturday afternoon - cool out, but warmer than it should be for winter-time. I walked up to the tasting bar and was greeted by one of the wine pourers (I forget her name - she was very friendly). I went through and tasted everything they had available that day. Some of the wines were quite nice. The highlight of the visit for me - is their little winery dog. I forget the dogs name - but the dog is very sweet and chill, and just wanders about, intermittently greeting and interacting with folks - very cute and very soft! The outdoor seating here is nice, the view is great. You will definitely get hit by the sun at certain times of the day however. I noticed the dinners with wine pairings that they do occasionally and I thought that was cool. This is a dog-friendly winery so be prepared to be a dog friendly person ;) The live outdoor music was very nice. We had a tasting of the white wine varietals. I'll be honest here and say that the best wine was the sweet blush sangria that was offered when we arrived. Not my choice usually, I enjoy wine to a snobbish extent perhaps and I don't care for sweet beverages but this one hit the spot! Maybe because I was out in the sun all day, I can't be sure. We went to the vineyard on a Thursday afternoon and the place was relatively empty. We had our pick of seating and the views were very nice. Allison, who takes on many roles in the winery, was delightful, pleasant, and very informative. We had a tasting to start and every one of the wines we tried was delightful. We especially enjoyed the crazy Italian wine "Pazzo", which was a blend of blackberry and Cabernet Franc. Great place, great views, excellent service, great wines. This was our last stop on the wine trail, but should have been the first. Friendly, polite, professional and oh so polite about asking us to keep our masks on and abide by the important Covid19 rules. We appreciated that in a state that is still having trouble keeping their numbers down. I can see why-so many places are not enforcing masks and social distancing. It's embarrassing really. We were greeted by the owner with a glass of his father's recipe of sangria. It was perfect for a warm, late Saturday afternoon. We immediately got a menu with offerings of food and flights. It included prices-I appreciate that. Anyway, we got a flight of wines, some we loved, others not so much. The atmosphere was so comfortable, people in small separated areas engaged in conversation, We had been to 4 other vineyards in the area before this. The customer service was not even close to Magnolia. This place wins, hands down. I'll go back in a heartbeat, we felt Covid safe and had a good time during our visit. Thank God. Go! read more

I took my boyfriend and in-laws to Magnolia Vineyards for their first winery experience. They did not disappoint us! The entire experience was amazing. Tom made my reservation over the phone which we showed up an hour late to. They were still so accommodating and friendly despite our rude late appearance. There was live music playing outside. There were so many people, many with their furry kiddos. We sat inside and could still enjoy the music while sitting in the air conditioning. We brought our own food which is allowed and welcomed. The wine tasting was Covid-friendly and delicious. I love that they pair the wines with cheese and chocolate. It definitely takes the tasting to the next level. And Maggie and Vinny, the resident dogs, add such a friendly and comforting aspect to the already amazing experience. Our favorite wines were the Black Walnut White wine and the Battle Mountain Blush. Both are on the sweeter side but amazing. Their dessert wine, Pazzo, was also so scrumptious. They made an incredible sangria from their Blush that is to die for. I highly recommend this place. It's a perfect way to end the day after hiking at Shenandoah or just to spend a lazy afternoon in the fresh air. read more

Nice wines for a tiny vineyard! Reasonably priced too. White wine aficionados might rate them at 5 stars. At 5 acres under vine this is one of the smaller wineries around. The reds trend towards soft while the whites are complex. The $7 tasting include 7 wines (and I got a taste of sangria on top of that). They also served all the wines with a cheese pairing, which was a nice touch few places do these days. The tasting room is the basement of the owner's home (and the wine making equipment is in the garage). My server was super friendly, and one of the owners dropped by every so often. She also rinsed my glass with wine; a rarity in the wineries I've been to. Many of the vintages were between 2011- 2013. While 2011 was a rainy year, their red vintages from that year were still fairly good. But the 2012 vintages were even better. The Hawkins Run Red was nice; no strong flavors but instead more on the smooth side. The 2012 Cab Franc Reserve was soft with a hint of cherry. As much as I hate to admit it, despite being a red fan I really enjoyed the whites. The 2012 Black Walnut traminette had a melon nose and was pretty darn good; the 2013 vintage was a crazy white blend which was good but harder to place (and a Mike Shaps creation). Their 2013 Viognier was another 'soft' white which was also above-par. This is not a place for parties, but rather for a few people who just want to enjoy a glass. Fortunately they are planning a full tasting room nearby, so that's something to look forward to. But the current tasting room is dog friendly (although on a busy day it may be better to leave a larger pooch outside, because of the size of the room). read more

Right when I thought I had narrowed down my Top Five Wineries in Virginia, I saw a blue sign on hwy 211 that said, "Magnolia Vineyards." I slammed on the brakes, made a left, and 3 miles later, my wife and I pulled into our version of the ideal winery. Quiet, beautiful scenery, and well--I'll just put it in writing--fantastic wine. If you're reading this, you're probably a winery hunter, so you know the drill. Show up, assess the vibe, drink wine, leave a mental or literal review if it's worth it. And you've got your priorities. Ours are: quiet, beauty, and good wine. Occasionally, we find a winery that checks one or two boxes, but to find one that epitomizes all three is a thing of rarity. Magnolia Vineyards delivers in spades on all three. And then there's the fourth, unnecessary but preferable criterion that gives bonus points: like-able owners or staff. Glen the Owner is a down-to-earth guy who obviously loves his vineyard, his wine, and he's eager to share it with others. (Speaking of, they're the only vineyard we've been to that doesn't just say, "This wine pairs well with such-and-such cheese." They actually pair each wine in their tasting with a unique variety of interesting cheeses.) Glen was a great guide to their wine, but his warmth was genuine, and we took notice. If you're traipsing through Virginia wine country, and you find yourself deep in the hills (and this deep into my pedantic review), stop reading, take a left turn or a u-turn, and spend an afternoon relaxing at Magnolia Vineyards. This was our second time coming here and yet again, we felt so welcome (they even greet you at the door to welcome you inside - no one does this anymore, and it sent such a welcoming feeling)! The owners are fantastic and actually present and working, Vinnie & Maggie (the resident winery dogs) are the absolute best, and Allison is so great!!!! Not to mention, the wine is very tasty and I appreciate they offer a gluten free cracker in their food selection. We stopped in for a tasting and were instantly greeted, even though they were quite busy. The wines tasted OK, the reds were done a little nicer than the whites. Some are a mixture of other VA and CA vineyards, so be sure to ask if there's something you like and are interested where the grapes were grown. Biggest issue was that the tasting room was in a basement of a house. We've seen this before and it wasn't too bad, but this basement is unfinished, with exposed insulation-covered walls and joists. We get that this is a family winery, and that's nice, but it doesn't cost much to get the basement finished. The grounds were OK, nothing special, no special views of mountains, streams or ponds. One of the most enjoyable wineries I've been to. Arrived at the tasting room door to be greeted by Glenn and one of his friendly rescue dogs, who is a 5-month old (I think) "winery dog in training." Our $10pp tasting was with Jennifer and we were treated to a mix of red and white wines paired with cheese (all gluten-free) and, for those who could have gluten, crackers and chocolate. Everything, and I mean everything, was delicious! Moreover, everyone was warm and friendly--not the snotty attitude of some wineries in the area. There was live music when we stopped in and plenty of seating to have a glass and stay a while. The winery also sells gorgeous hand-made wine-related items. So in addition to purchasing the tastings and a few bottles of wine (one of their wines supports a local animal shelter), we had to pick up a gorgeous hand quilted table runner and a custom engraved wine decanter commissioned from a local artist. read more

We happened to be traveling to Castleton Farms for a visit and Magnolia was on our route. What a great decision to stop and do a tasting. We were traveling with our dog, Iggy, and it was so nice that the winery is super dog-friendly. Allison was the manager on duty and she made our visit, and the tasting, about as good as it could be. Magnolia vineyards was a wonderful stop on our way back from Shenandoah, with pretty outdoor seating, a live band and exceptionally friendly service. We had our dogs with us and we were not only able to taste easily, but all the staff loved on the dogs. We particularly like the walnut white, and uncharacteristically the sweet ones-- the blush which tastes of strawberries, and the pazza, which is blackberry, but neither are syrupy. This was was the last stop of our winery tour for the weekend. We walked in and were greeted by their adorable dog Maggie and the husband and wife team who run the vineyard. The gentleman who did our tasting was so friendly and nice and they all made us feel welcome. Been to plenty of wineries so for a smaller Virginia winery had low expectations, boy were we wrong. Super nice people (owners and patrons) there. The wines were surprisingly good. Came here today with my family and a couple of my neighbors and had a great time! There is a little area for kids to sit and play, so my son was content with himself there while the adults had wine and cheese. The tasting was fabulous. We worked at our own pace and everything was explained to us very thoroughly and carefully. Disclaimer: I hate red wine. I have tried so many reds from all over the world and found ONE I liked from Moldova and that's it. I can't stand them. Well, the expert pairing with the cheeses, and the flavors and mixtures offered really had me change my tune! I loved the home feel and personalized service. I love this vineyard! I was part of a bachelorette party, and this was our last stop for our vineyard day. When we arrived at the vineyard we were greeted by the fluffy, adorable Maggie, who is one of two dogs that belong to the owners. The winery is on the smaller side, but was incredibly accommodating to our party of 10, and we were immediately and warmly sat and our tasting commenced. One of the things I love most about Magnolia is that they offer cheese and chocolate with the tasting. Everything we tried was super tasty, and they're really spot on with their pairings. Maggie roamed around the winery as people tasted and hung out, and she is an incredibly friendly dog who loves pets. In addition to the wine they sell, Magnolia also sells food and kitchen products, cute signs, quilts, and jewelry! The soft, live music in the corner really set the mood.
