Every regional library has its own merits. I enjoyed the quiet courtyard in my Marietta GA branch…read more Our library in Ardmore PA lends three-day museum passes (which I take full advantage of!) And the library in North Fort Myers has a section I love: "Read and Return." Unsure what this is, the librarian explained that they're books that one borrows without checking out. "Take as long as you'd like to read them," she said. "A good resource for snowbirds who may or may not bring the books back," she added. As a snowbird myself -- who returned books on my quick trip back to FL this week -- I'm a fan of this section. There are some good reads, and to keep the shelves stocked, I donate books that others might enjoy.

As one would expect, the library is quiet and there are multiple study carrels where you can set up a laptop and use their free wifi and power for a while. The wifi does not have any registration. The facility is roomy and airy with neatly organized shelves of books, magazines and other media. Masks are encouraged but not required. They also have a contactless pickup where you can reserve books online and the library will bring them out to you in your car. Note that you do not need to be a North Fort Myers resident to use the library. It is open to all, though only local residents can borrow materials. Not only is it a…read morestunning building with tons of space to sit and relax with interesting things to look at and beautiful views, but you can get tons of entertainment for your vacation! It costs $10 for a non-resident to check out items, which lasts for the year. You cannot only get books and movies, but you can get kits to cook different items with cookbooks and pans, tons of games to play with your family when the sun has gone down at night, and even passes to local attractions, like the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum, and the Edison Winter Estate! Definitely a value beyond the $10. You might think this is a small town so the library will not have a lot of titles, but I was really pleasantly surprised at how many copies they had in stock of recent best sellers, popular movies, etc. We also took our baby to the baby and toddler story time on Tuesday morning, which was a great event that we all really enjoyed! The staff putting it on were welcoming and everyone had a lot of fun.

The programs are engaging and the on-site offerings are unmatched in the Sanibel / East Fort Myers area. Their after hours "meet the author" series is a unique and delightful addition to a rich literary culture. The Sanibel Library just keeps getting better!

This place has a lot going for it, so I'm giving five stars. There are a couple areas where they…read morecould make it better. And they do have one really negative thing tainting their reputation among decent folk, but I'll leave that nightmare for last. First, not all Barnes & Nobles have nice chairs in which you can sit. Most seem to rely too much on the really uncomfortable cafe seating items and fixtures. I spend a lot of time in bookstores, and a place to sit for a few moments that is actually comfortable is a real benefit. Second, all experiences with the staff here have been positive. They seem, from what I've experienced, like pleasant and smart people. I like this place a lot, but here are some suggestions for improvements: 1. It seems like they could fit more books in this place without making it feel cramped. Or add some more lovely chairs. There are areas that seem rather empty or underused. 2. If they did put in a set of bookshelves in the "Poetry, Drama, Literary Criticism" section, they would actually have room for books on literary criticism, of which there seem to be none at the moment. Poetry? Yes. Drama? Yes. Literary criticism? Not really. 3. This nightmare aspect is not unique to this store. It seems that all the Barnes & Noble pay points in the cafes put up a "tip" screen when you go to pay that deliberately makes it almost impossible to push the "no tip" option. This is called a "dark pattern" and is on the point of being illegal in the EU and other decent parts of the world. It should be illegal here, too, and whatever third-rate MBA at Barnes & Noble convinced their superiors this was a good idea should be sent back to the asylum from which they escaped. Scientists call this type of dark pattern "a coercive tipping interface, in which accepting a tip requires one tap, while declining requires a five-second hard press." It's aggressive, tacky and should be condemned by all moral persons. Elsewhere on Yelp I have complained that in no civilized society does anyone ever ASK for a tip; using a machine proxy to do so does not change that fact. And using an aggressive machine proxy just makes good people angry. It's a bad idea all around.
