I had called Forever Friends a few days before my dog was put down, just to plan out what I was going to do when my dog died. They explained all of my options so I would be ready to take care of everything when the time came. Last week, on Monday morning, I took my dog to the vet and had her put to sleep. My dad and I drove over to the funeral home, went inside and rang the bell to let them know we were there, and we were taken care of right away. They were very compassionate when going over the details. Even offering me a tissue because I couldn't stop crying (o: About two days later, I got the call that her ashes were ready. Her remains were in their standard tin (they offer various urns but I'm going to spread her ashes elsewhere), I received her death certificate, and a very sweet and sympathetic card from the staff - all of these were in a cute little bag with paw prints all over. The feeling I get as i walked between the gravestones, was one of warmth and comfort. It felt like I was not alone, and even though I knew none of the people buried here, I still felt some kind of love with me. The grounds are very clean and litter free. Lots of critters occupy the area, mostly dragonflies and butterflies, that have no problem flying up and making your aquaintince. Each gravestone is very unique and different. No two were ever alike, and they ranged from the extremely detailed, to very simple yet still beautiful. A lot of the gravestones are dated during the 1800's,so there is a lot of history told here. In the middle of the cemetery is a monument dedicated to veterans of all wars, with flags waving high above it. Any pictures that I have taken of actual gravestones were taken from behind to respectively keep the names on them secret. To end my review I would love to recite a quote I read from one of the gravestones, one we can all learn from. "We shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that we can do, or any kindness that we can show to any human being, let us do it now. Let us not defer or neglect, for we shall not pass this way again."

Sadly, it was time to say goodbye to my big sister. Her wishes were quite simple. Cremation, no fan fare, no funeral, not even a memorial celebration, just a loving goodbye to those who were close to her while she was still here. She wished to have her ashes tossed away in the air over the ocean. That was all. I could (and would) do that for her. Her Hospice Social Worker was the one who gave me this name and just one other, since these services are limited in their locality. And I discovered quite surprisingly that Rogue Valley Cremation Service provided the exact same services as the "other" place, but perhaps at a 40% discount. I never had to step outside my door to arrange this. I could pre-arrange everything online, which definitely helped me to maintain my own composure and dignity during a most difficult time. Their basic fees include immediate transportation of her remains to their funeral home in Medford, storage until the cremation is completed, the coroner's certified death certificate done, and a non-descript container that can be shipped to me. $945. They made it very easy. And now that she has passed, I am in direct contact with them for the final details and billing. There are a few additional, a small fee mandated by the state (Oregon), and a $25 charge for each certified death certificate. And for the next 6 months I can order more certified death certificates and receive them quickly. After that, it is not as easy. The employees were very kind and understanding. It is a pleasure that I write this review, if if I can help others find a reasonably priced service that is both professional, uncomplicated, and empathetic. Thank you Brandy for your sweet disposition and efficiency.

It's the best one I've ever visited. You can pick up a little brochure at the cemetery that tells about some of the more interesting residents: what they did, how they contributed to the town and where they were from. There are sections in the cemetery for the Catholics, Jews and fraternal organizations like "the redman" and "oddfellows". There are signs and maps that show where the sections are. The monuments, epitaphs and arrangement of the cemetery give a peek into the way in which people related to death in the early 1900's. One set of tombs was of a father and his 3 sons that were killed by Modoc Indians. The boys were in their teens - youngest was 14 as I remember. I was not expecting to see that - it was kind of a shock actually. So sad. There is an organized group in Jacksonville which preserves the monuments by repairing the dilapidated tomb stones and even making new markers for the ones that disappeared. They do a good job! The work I saw is both "historical" and "respectful". I was impressed that the cemetery is not just a grave site of the deceased - but there are things to be learned about the people at that time; what they believe and how they lived. These things may be understood by reading a book, but to see the graves, the family plots and the eternal monuments eaten away by the tooth of time gives one pause to reflect on the clock and our own plot of time we consume. Seeing the graves also gives a glimpse of the residents of Jacksonville 100 to 150 years ago. Tip 1: Take the trolley tour before you visit the cemetery. ($5 for 45 minutes) The trolley tour will show you the homes and business establishments of the important people of Jacksonville. You will hear stories of their wealth, dreams and social lives. Then visit them in the cemetery.
