I'm a bit hesitant here to go all the way with the 5 stars...but it was RIGHT THERE. Maybe it's cuz my lifestyle has changed. I'm not traveling and not eating out nearly as much. Eating very little meat and generally trying to be healthy. So when 'the boy' asked for Dim Sum, I laughingly obliged, thinking 'oh this stupid child...take out dim sum? Prepare to be disappointed'. I ordered a few additional dishes. Wonton soup, veggie fried rice, a spicy eggplant with shrimp dish. All were EXCELLENT. Flavourful and hot and fresh! The dimsum got leveled by the kid. Shrimp siumai and hargow were all very good! He was super happy. He gave it a 'ten'. Shi! Pork buns (which we haven't eaten yet but will save for tonight) looked a bit meager but hopefully tasty. Sesame balls? Holy sweet fucking Christ. Absolute perfection. All this for $68. I think well worth it. I love when my faith is renewed in Ottawa Chinese cuisine. We ordered dinner last week from Yimin Dim Sum House. I think it's the 4th time we've ordered from them - they're consistently good. We had General Tso's chicken, Mapo Tofu in Spicy Sauce, Beef fried rice and two steamed BBQ pork buns. Their General Tso's chicken might be my new favourite - it was spicy and tangy and sweet all at the same time with generous mouthfuls of tender chicken. The beef fried rice was flavourful and a bowl of it lasted the two of us 3-4 days. My husband loves mapo tofu and he enjoyed his portion for 2-3 days. The BBQ pork buns were just the right size - not as big as the ones at Yangtze's Dim Sum, but not too small either, and they, too, were scrumptious. I see some of the other reviews had issues with timing. I recommend ordering ahead (you can choose the delivery time) through Skip the Dishes or Uber. Noticed this place is a block from my building on Kent street I had a Cantonese chow mein craving and decided to try it out. I'm glad I did. Placed a order for pick up by phone and food was ready in 25 minutes. Didn't disappoint. Delicious. I opted for chicken instead of the bbq pork. Excellent food, great portion and fresh ingredients. My former professor from my undergraduate years now lives in Ottawa. We last met four year ago, when he was still living in Thornhill. We lost touch for a bit, but I reconnected with him by letting him know that I would be in his city. He suggested having a beverage at a cafe. He then got great recommendations from his friends to visit this restaurant for dim sum. We both hadn't visited this place before, so I was game. I picked him up and we drove to the restaurant. You can park on the street, which has metered parking. The restaurant, as with many businesses in Ottawa's Chinatown area, are converted houses. This one had a veranda. The first floor is the restaurant's dining area, with a limited number of tables. The washrooms are on the second floor. We got there just before 1 pm. There were two free tables, so we were fortunate to not have to wait. A bunch of folks cleared the place half an hour later, so I recommend coming during off-peak lunch hours. The folks working there speak Cantonese and English. The menu is itemized, and you mark the quantity next to the dim sum items that you want. The menu is in English and Chinese. We ordered around ten items or so. He was pleased with how fresh and tasty everything was, from traditional har gow and siu mai, to sticky rice in a lotus leaf and pan-fried pork and cabbage dumplings. I even taught him how to use chopsticks. He did well. We eventually asked for a fork. We ended our meal with steamed cake. It was perfect. It was airy, light, fluffy, and not too sweet. This restaurant is a hole in the wall. It's such a gem. I recommend going here if you want authentic dim sum done right. read more

Wow! Wow! Wow! I don't think I've ever had Dim Sum fresher than at Yimin! We came here on a Sunday morning around 11:00 am and out of the eight tables, only some were available. This is a very small restaurant located in a century home, which is a big part of its charm. On the day we visited, there were only two women working there, both cooking & serving. That said, the service was still consistent and we ate within an hour. It seems that the menu has changed out the last several years, as they now have a picture menu that combines the dim sum dishes with larger items. We ordered: Shrimp Har Gow Shrimp Rice Rolls Beef Tripe in Ginger Broth Deep Fried Wontons Coconut Rice Balls with Peanuts (sweet) Football Dumpling (deep fried rice dough filled with pork) Deep Fried Tofu The prices are standard for a dim sum restaurant. Small items were $3.39 and large items were $5.00. The first dishes to arrive were the deep fried items. The Shrimp Wontons were a little under-filled but still delicious. Yimin's best dim sum items are definitely the ones containing rice dough, either steamed or fried. The dough actually MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH, which is impossible to achieve unless the dough is made fresh & never frozen. Some of the items may appear sloppy at first, but don't let the looks fool you! Very tasty and well cooked in the wok (the beef brisket rice rolls and the Canatonese chow mein). We had the thousand year eggs and salted pork rice congee which was less salty and rounded the meal well. We were three and had more than enough food with three dishes. Service was attentive. Our teapot was refilled many times as we chatted into the evening. While it wasn't as busy as when it was under different ownership, service was reasonable and the food above average in the Chinatown strip. Dim sum is available all day a la carte but we stayed with the rice and noodles dishes this time. Definitely curious to return and try the dim sum dishes another time. Great little place that offers dim sum. Instead of carts you order the items and they make it fresh for you. This method is very common in Toronto and allows for a guarantee your food will be hot when it comes out. I love this place as an alternative to the much larger restaurants. Staff is friendly and service is great the time I've gone. As with most restaurants along Somerset there is only street parking. Not as busy as most others which I assume is based on their location however i know that as word gets out this will change. Support the smaller guy and pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed. I cannot speak for dinner as I've never eaten here for dinner. All the times I've come have been for dim sum only. read more

(A 4.5 stars instead of a 5) Fabulous dim sum joint in Ottawa's Chinatown. If it wasn't for a quick grocery shopping in Kowloon Market, we wouldn't make effort to visit Hum Sum Restaurant for our brunch affair. The whole stretch of Chinatown street is filled with mostly Vietnamses eateries, while the most prominent Chinese restaurants are non other than Yangtze & Oriental Chu Shing Restaurant anchor on the left for the former and on the right for the latter once u crossed the Chinatown monumental archway. C has tried them but she adamantly voted for Hung Sum after she is done with the brunch today. Accordingly, the food is more flavorful although slightly stronger in taste, in comparison to the two Chinese eateries. We arrived at 11am and much to our surprise, the restaurant is full house. We were asked to wait for a brief 10mins by the friendly lady at cashier counter. We gladly sat at the waiting area outside the dining room with the dim sum ordering form in our hand. We looked through the list and start ticking on the form. By the time the lady came to us to usher us to our table, we are ready with our orders. The lady is very prompt and bring us tea very quickly after sending the orders to the kitchen. The restaurant is very small, barely sit like not more than 35. The layout has a strong Chinese scent, very traditional, not fanciful but functional. The dining hall can be a bit warm in the day and somewhat crampy in between tables. The food arrived in 20mins and were all served pipping hot straight from the kitchen. I am not sure how many chef are behind the stoves but the dim sum was all good and flavorful. We had quite a couple of items that marched up to us fairly quickly on the table. First came the steaming hot Chee Cheong Fun (rice rolls) wrapped with deep fried dough fritters. The dark sauce is very flavorful and not too salty, it integrated very well with the plain rice roll and the crispy golden dough fritter add extra depth to the soft structure in the roll. The teochew style pork dumplings landed in my mouth next. The translucent skin is soft and not chewy. The skin breaks easily as u bite and the fillings just scattered in your mouth cavity, a mild explosion that spills the pork morsels, spring onions all moisten in a pool of gooey sauce, very well seasoned. The deep fried squids were crispy. The squid rings were not rubbery but very springy. The carrot cake was very well executed too. I love the savory Chinese sausage bits dotted the wobbly white cake texture. Less raddish but packed with noticeable smokey flavour from the pan-frying process. Slightly greasy but still acceptable. The spare ribs in black bean sauce are not to be missed too. The pork ribs are tender, not leathery or fibrous. The meat mopped up the savory black bean sauce in the small metal plate, very delicious and not overly salty. The deep fried Tofu also fared well. The outer crisp batter filmed the ultra silky tofu structure. Best part of all, it surprised me with a minute prawn paste meat shoved in between the fried exterior and the smooth interior. The sauce compliments it by lending a bit more flavor, since everyone knows tofu is always bland. You have to try the shrimp Siew Mai. Each piece is packed with real shrimps and they are succulent and very fresh. No awful seafood taste found. Very juicy and adequately seasoned. My only regret is the char Siew bun. If I didn't mark it on my order list, this review could have aced very well. I reasoned that the bun is handmade hence the bun is less fluffy but very coarse in its texture (u could see the rough surface). The dough in the steam bun is not sticky but too thick and dry for my liking. The BBQ pork barely passed the mark; miserable filling, a lot drier than the usual classic, less flavorful. We ended up eating the pathetic pork filling leaving out the hard dough. There's no additional manpower in the restaurant, the lady tends to everything upfront, from cashier to clearing tables, to siting customers, taking orders and table servicing. Tough on her, yet she always put on a smile and is very courteous. I spoke to her while picking up my bill at the counter, knowing that she's busy. I chatted with her a bit and was told that reservation is allowed on weekdays while they could only take in bookings up to 10.30am on weekends. Beyong that, please walk-in for a table as the restaurant is notoriously known for weekend crowd. If given a chance, I will be glad to make a revisit. surely a penny's worth! I would not order Szechuan food here (we had Szechuan boiled fish before, the usual chillies and pepper corns in the dish were missing, it was a disaster). It's Good Friday and my sister, her kids, and I drove downtown to a family run and owned dim sum restaurant. Hung Sum is on the outskirts of Ottawa's Chinatown. It is in a remote location not easily distinguishable from the residential housing around it. Hung Sum is a sparkling gem! We arrived at 1130 am. When we walked in the first thing I noticed about this restaurant is it is tiny!!! I betcha it seats a maximum of 25 to 30 customers! After about a 45 min wait we were seated. The 4 of us ordered 15 dishes so we had quite a sampling of their menu. I like to bug my niece Sam by saying the dim sun restaurants in Ottawa don't compare to Big City Toronto or Big City Vancouver! It bugs her! She's a small town girl and loves Ottawa! By the end of our dim sum I said Hung Sum is small but it's food had Big City flavour! All the dishes come out hot and super delish! The food my friends ate was great! I enjoyed sharing their plates, but a couple of us ran into some red flags during our meal. My "Squid and Ginger Dumplings" was a small assortment of squid in soup. I laughed when I opened the lid. My main dish wasn't too bad, but for a "Shredded Pork Lo Mein" there was little pork! Like maybe the amount of table pepper you would put on pasta. My friend's "Shrimp Dumplings" were Shrimp Spingrolls. Another friends dumplings (yes we actually got some real ones :D ) were personally estimated at approximately 96.5% dough. The receipt was written in Cantonese so we couldn't distinguish what we ordered - which made it difficult to address any mistakes. (Surprise!) Overall I felt a bit tricked. We ordered around one hour before their closing time so I feel like we were just given what was left at the end of the day. Financially understandable... but morally a reenactment of your least favorite historical atrocity. I see a couple other reviews here about watered down soup and such. This is the only place I will eat dimsum in Ottawa. It's a family run business, but it's not anything fancy inside. This has the best Asian cuisine I've ever had. Everything is made fresh to order so the taste is that much better. The server explained what the items we were curious about were so we didn't make any mistakes ordering. The prices are also fantastic, the last time I went I was with three other girls and we all left very very full and paid about $15-20 each. Wish I lived closer so I could go more often! Imagine my face when I walked into this small dim sum place and was offered a menu to check off from. Where are the carts?!?! As I patiently salivate for my food to come out (food too quite awhile), I started rearranging my table and getting my table ready for delciousness consumption. My mind was just blown when I was told that they do not have hot chilli oil or hot mustard. What?!?! What kind of dim sum restaurant is this?!?! Outlook was not looking so great for this delicious meal and I continued to pout in my seat. EVERYTHING WAS FORGIVEN the moment I my food brushed my tastebuds. For all of their shortcomings, Hung Sum serves the freshest dim sum I have been privy to taste. The dim sum menu is extensive but I had to look at the Yelp pics to see what I might be ordering a couple times. Don't expect to be able to eat lunch comfortably in an hour. Hung Sum is a small restaurant off the edge of Chinatown that has the freshest, well prepared, flavorful (insert all other mouth watering adjectives here) dim sum I have ever tasted. I've often travelled for dim sum-- eaten in Hong Kong, NYC, Toronto amongst a few. But this place is really a treat. I hope that people make the trip out. You'll not be disappointed. I've only been for take-out, so this review is based on that. First, this place is itty bitty - only five or six tables, and they were packed on a late Sunday morning, so take-out was a good call. We called in our order but then I had a hard time finding parking, but luckily they waited to finish the last items in the order (the fried ones) until I arrived so that they didn't get smushy. The woman manning the phone, cash, and waiting tables was very friendly and efficient. There are no carts, but the dim sum is very good, and has some different options than what we're used to. Loved the deep fried shrimp and water chestnut balls, for instance, and the pork and coriander balls. The old standbys, like fried taro and meat dumplings and the pork rice rolls, were also very tasty. The har gao were delicious - the shrimp had that snap you look for when you bite into a har gao and the wrappers didn't disintegrate when we tried to pick them up the way they do at so many restaurants (and T&T). Would love to treat my sister in law, whose family is Cantonese and who lives in San Francisco, to a visit here - I think it would pass the grade! I was excited to see some congee/jook options on the menu and would like to give those a try. If I lived in the neighbourhood that would be a no-brainer breakfast on cold, lazy mornings. Price was a little high for dim sum, but about in line for what I expect in Ottawa, and to be fair we also probably went a little overboard in the quantity we ordered. There must be lots of MSG in the food. I started to have a reaction half way through my meal. (Normally, the reaction would come after a meal if there was MSG in the food I eat). All my friends don't have issues with MSG so they love the food we ordered. The place was very small with only 8-9 small tables. My friends and I came here for our last meal before heading back to Toronto. The ladies there were very nice and welcoming, always considerate about utensils and allergies. My biggest gripe was the food itself... we got one fried rice, one sweet and sour pork, mapo tofu with beef and some choy sum. The food portions were a bit small, espcially for an average of $10, and there was a longer than average wait for food, especially since we were the only table there during lunch time. Everything also seemed a bit watered down, lacking in any strong flavour or spicyness. The overall experience wasn't satisfying as we all left mildly satiated rather than full. Normally I'm not phased but when you have a flight to catch, they don't exactly stop the plane for you so I wasn't happy with that. I happened to plan ahead for emergencies so left work a bit early and decided I might still make it and I really wanted to bring my family a good meal that I got them excited over. Needless to say it was a bit on the edge. They apologized and gave me a free veggie spring roll. Recommendation: decent place if you like cantonese style food with some added mainland dishes. We have been visiting this restaurant for more than two years and always found the food excellent and very reasonably priced. It was one of our top three Chinese restaurants in Ottawa. However, on our recent visit we were totally nauseated. While sitting at a back table the owner/server was watching a tablet and simultaneously picking her nose with her left hand, examining the findings and then placing them on a napkin. A near perfect Dim Sum experience. I think it's fair to call the place a "hole in the wall". It's definitely frequented by the local residents of china town, always a good sign. We were welcomed warmly and the service was very efficient (contrary to what we saw in other reviews), we were in and out in less than 45 mins. We were brought a wonderful jasmine tea by the pot as soon as we sat down. There's no dim sum carts in this hot little restaurant, you order by checking off your selections on a paper menu. We had a couple steamed dumplings, pork shumai and the coriander dumplings, which were easily the highlight. Very fresh shrimp and a wonderful burst of flavor from the coriander. The dumplings had the perfect, thin, tender wrapper. Barbecue pork buns were also very nice. The buns were subtly sweet and not the least bit chewy like they can be some places. From the fried side of the menu we tried the ginger scallion beef dumplings. Excellent, with just the right filling to wrapper ratio and a melt in your mouth texture. We topped the meal off with a house specialty which was Chinese style pork belly and preserved duck on a bed of rice. Such a wonderfully flavorful dish, that would be hard to describe. This place was a great find, highly recommended. The only thing holding me back from five stars is how hot and loud a place it was to eat. But once you bite on a piece of fresh har gor or chang feng, your frustration with the hour long wait disappears. I'm puzzled why there are so many reviews & photos on here that are clearly from a few years back when the previous proprietor (Hung Sum) operated at this location. The dim sum that is served here now is average and not memorable. The best offering is its chicken in clay pot rice, which is prepared to order and is fresh, filling and flavorful, especially with the added sweet soy sauce. Full marks for that. I have had their a la carte dishes of mixed seafood with tofu and beef chow mein, but found they lacked finesse and wok-hey to recommend. The overuse of starch in the sauces is also unfortunate. Absolutely delicious. My go to place for dim sum in Ottawa. Hot and tasty, our selections were prepared to order. This may take a little more time but it's worth the wait as it is hot and delicious.
