Heartbroken and hungry, we kept walking around the area until suddenly, we find ourselves at Soler Street and this yellow sign was staring back at us: GREEN. PLANET. VEGETARIAN. Thank you, universe! I've tried a few vegetarian places in Binondo, but this relatively newish addition to Chinatown takes the whole cake! Taiwanese-owned Green Planet Vegetarian serves a variety of tasty vegetarian and vegan food at super 'sulit' prices. Much like a super clean, glorified 'turo-turo', you can get a rice meal with 3 viands for only Php 100, and with complimentary hot tea, too! Try their veggie sisig (creamy and dairy-free!) and their crowd-pleaser, fried miteng (gluten), which has a beautiful, chewy texture and savory flavor--amazing when dipped in vinegar. Another favorite of mine is their radish cake, a slice for only Php 15! Being sold here as well are vegetarian and vegan food items such as Magic Meat (dehydrated TVP made locally), canned barbecue sauce, and this Taiwanese granulated mushroom seasoning (reminiscent of the local Magic Sarap seasoning--look for the package with that very strange smiling mushroom). I've also heard from their staff that they're planning to open a Makati branch!

I don't care to join either side of this debate. What i do is eat vegetarian dishes whenever possible, but still go for red meat and fowl on a regular basis. Whenever I am out on the field for work, I usually end up heading for the nearest SM food court to eat, and I'm glad that a lot of them have a branch of Bodhi Vegetarian Healthfood. The taste of their various vegemeat dishes comes close enough to the real thing. One of my favorites is their version of sweet and sour pork, as well as their pork barbecue on a stick. Biting into either dish tells you that it can't possibly be real pork. This is where the tofu-based dishes is a dead giveaway that it's not the real thing. But then, you would know because this is a vegan place, remember? Bodhi has set meals for less than P100 and they even come with a teeny weenie cup of iced tea or soda as well as a complimentary mini cup of soup. When I was young, the only place to get vegetarian meals on a regular basis was the Adventist Hospital in Pasay City. I'm glad that we Pinoys have come to appreciate the health benefits of vegetarian food, and that there is a Bodhi Vegetarian Healthfood place nearby. Four stars for them,

I asked for bottled water and they had one bottle left. My dad (born in the Philippines), watched the lady who initially sat us down who mocked me for asking for bottled water. I had my back to the restaurant the entire time, so I didn't see a lot of the interaction, but my dad saw and understood it all. We ordered the sisig - undercooked. The pancit hab hab - underwhelming. They had no soda, and we all (9) had to share 1 big bottle of water. Ok, fine, no troubles. Then, they ran out of plenty of entrees, so we were limited on what to order. My sister watched the staff spray the table while there were still items on it, while my dad watched and listened as the staff were gossiping about all the patrons (including us) in the restaurant. It was quite uncomfortable. Sorry not sorry, but this place is no longer it and the entire staff needs an entire overhaul of retraining if you want to salvage this place.

I was happy to have spotted Tossed, a new salad and wrap joint at the 2nd floor food court of SM Mall of Asia. They offer a small selection of Asian destination-inspired salads (which you can also get as a wrap, at no extra cost!) And, if you prefer to have your meal without meat, you get Php 10 off your bill! I personally wish all veg-friendly places would offer this discount! If you're one of those people who find customizing your toppings and dressings just too darn tedious, then this is your place, as you won't get an existential crisis while trying to figure out your meal. Though, to put it plainly, this place is ideal for someone who wants to sneak in some veggies in their diet but still have the excuse to eat unhealthy, oily, and meaty stuff at the same time--some of their ingredients include adobo chicken flakes, roasted barbecued pork, and chicharon among others. In a way this can be a good thing, as it makes salad-eating more accessible to heavy meat eaters and junk foodies. But, if you're looking for a salad packed with all the quality, healthy, nutrient-packed good stuff, sadly this is not your joint. As for vegan options, there are only around 2 or 3, as their dressings mostly have some form of seafood, honey, or dairy (and they won't even allow you to replace it with the vegan-friendly dressing!). Currently they're on soft opening, so my meal took quite a while as their staff was doing a mini guessing game with the toppings. I got the Korea wrap without the beef bulgogi (Php 140), which has a kimchi dressing--quite like a bibimbap without rice and egg. My wrap turned out not as satisfying or punched with flavor as I had hoped for it to be (granted that I had the beef removed-but they do welcome no-meat options, which means their food must feel 'complete' without the meat). With more options and flexibility, this place has some great potential.

I'd say get their quekiam (one of their specialties)--this erm..thing (I don't know, gluten or soy based mock meat?) is stuffed with savory veggies and mushrooms and comes with a spicy red sauce on the side. It's definitely not like the street kikiam which is made of god knows what! Super tasty appetizer... I was excited to try their veg sisig as it was one of their specialties, but I was a bit disappointed as the serving was quite small (at Php 170...) and while it was seasoned well and had a variety of mushrooms and minced tofu/soy/gluten (unsure...), I guess it lacked that creamy sauce that I loved when I used to eat the real pork sisig. It could use some veg mayo or some sauce to elevate it to a really satisfying sisig recreation. However, I should mention that it did come with crumbled chicharon (made of tofu skins) on top! The "sangria" tasted like maybe 10% red wine and 90% Kool Aid. The "draft beer" was of course San Miguel, a.k.a. vaguely beer-flavored fizzy water. About the only thing it has going for it is the upscale, glitzy decor (high ceilings, mirrors mirrors everywhere, Las Vegas style lighting, etc.) for which they clearly did spend a good amount. Unfortunately, you cannot eat ambiance. Service is good but hey of course it is, this is the Philippines where labor is dirt cheap and abundant, folks are hungry and happy to work very very hard for next to nothing. Better than those rude, bratty and snotty French waiters of course, but can't make up for the fact that this place is such a tourist rip-off in all other respects. I am utterly embarrassed that I wasted the money (1200PHP = $22 USD per head which is extravagant in this country but average in the US where a $22 buffet usually gets you better food than this) and stupidly long wait time for this place (we came an hour before they opened and had to wait in line with an overflow crowd of nearly 100 people who could not all fit inside so admittance was gradual, like an Apple store when a new iPhone is released). Especially places like Juju Eats which not only serves salads and fruit juices, but DELICIOUS salads and fruit juices. In my experience, I've learned that "delicious" and "healthy" don't always go hand in hand. Thankfully, Juju Eats is here to prove that sometimes, it does. The whole vibe of Juju Eats is sort of like a giant salad bar. The food comes in stainless steel bowls, and you can choose whether you want your salad as a half order or a full order. If you're like me and can't get enough of all the veggies, I'd say definitely go for the full order (even if it's a little pricey, in my opinion) but the half-order is pretty filling too. The salads are definitely not of the "tasteless green stuff" variety, and you can choose from a menu or make a salad up yourself. They have everything from nacho salads to pasta salads to some special ones like the Roast Pumpkin which has bits of fruit and nut in them. You can even choose to have your salad wrapped in pita, if you want to eat your salad on-the-go. They also have a bunch of specially-made juices, if you wanna up the "healthy food" factor with a delicious fruity drink. Juju Eats is definitely the place to go if you're a health nut looking for a fix, or a veggie hater waiting to be converted.

I visited their Paseo de Roxas branch for dinner on a Tuesday night, and there were only a few tables occupied, perhaps because most have their Juju meals delivered our for take-away? Anyway, no queues and waiting for a vacant table, the place was well-lit and the interiors were so modern and vibrant without being intimidating, so this was a very pleasant experience for me. The freedom to customize your food at Juju Eats is just plesantly overwhelming. Their salads can be ordered Regular- or Half-size, or as wraps. Or if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you can practically make your own salad from among their MANY fresh ingredients you'll see at the counter. Since it's my first time, I went with my friend's recommendation, the Big Boy Wrap--romaine, grilled chicken, bacon, hard boiled egg, sun dried tomato, grated cheddar, red kidney beans, and french dressing in a wrap of regular dough (the alternative option is whole wheat dough). It was one of the more appealing choices for me because there was meat in it, unlike the other choices that contained mostly veggies, fruit, or cheese. And the flavor didn't disappoint at all. The ingredients were obviously fresh and went well together in one bite, just like a good, hearty salad, minus the overpowering dressing. They put their EVOO and vinaigrette as free-flowing condiments you can have on the side, so I tried them and they made each bite even better. My friend even put sriracha on his salad pasta. If there's anything I'm not jumping up and down about Juju Eats is the price. But then again, it's hard to find restaurants with really affordable guiltless offerings these days, especially in the Philippines. Also, don't expect to be filled especially if you have a usually big appetite (As a result, we walked to the nearby Jamba Juice stall at Eco Plaza, LOL.) Overall, I was happy with my first Juju Eats experience. In fact, I cannot wait to try every other thing in their menu, especially their salad pastas. I just don't think it's financially sustainable for me to buy from them everyday.
