Doctors told us he wouldn't last the summer, and they immediately put him on an aggressive chemotherapy regimen. During his treatment, we also decided to look into "alternative" medicine. By the grace of God, we found our way to Yi Luo and Eastway Acupuncture & Wellness. As soon as we met her, we were immediately comforted by her gentle nature. Though she didn't know us, we could also tell she cared and desperately wanted to help. In addition to getting weekly acupuncture, Yi recommended a combination of herbal remedies and bone broth soup. We did everything she told us to, though some thought it odd that I'd give my husband a warm foot bath (with herbs!) every night before bed. And I won't lie - he didn't love the taste of the soup, but he gulped it down while I watched, arms folded, until he finished every drop. When we went in to get the results of my husband's first CT scan, I asked his oncologist what a "good" result might be. His response was, "About a 30% reduction in overall tumor volume." We were astounded when we learned my husband had a 94% reduction in tumor volume. In July of 2014, after my husband finished his chemotherapy, we went in for another CT scan. I'll never forget his oncologist turning around his computer monitor for us to see the scans. I remember leaning in for a closer look. "Where are the tumors?" I asked. I remember the scans looking like Swiss cheese when he was first diagnosed. The doctor looked at us, and with a kind smile, hunched his shoulders and said, "Gone." My husband was declared disease-free by CT scan that day. There was no explanation by any of his doctors. He'd achieved the impossible. He was called "a miracle." Nine years later, my husband is still cancer free. Now I have no idea exactly why we were given this gift, but I do know that Yi's care contributed to my husband's healing. I don't believe there's any evidence that acupuncture can help cure cancer, but I do believe it relieves stress and lessens side effects of treatment. Those two things and the genuine care he received absolutely contributed to my husband's healing. When I developed chronic pain a couple of years ago, I knew exactly where to go. I now see Yi every week. She's still the same - dedicated, caring, optimistic. I'd recommend Yi and anyone in her office. You couldn't possibly find better alternative care.

I have EDS, craniocervical instability, dysautonomia and transverse myelitis, all of which have been an ordeal to untangle, and she's been completely brilliant in her ability to juggle both the big picture and small details simultaneously within a variety of rare issues. After burning through multiple specialists, she was actually the first person to suggest I could have Ehlers-Danlos, an unusual genetic condition. How she even knew about this is beyond me, as most EDS patients are first introduced to it by a specialist, definitely not a generalist like their PCP. She then sent me to a geneticist at BWH who confirmed her hunch. She also suspected I have Lyme when no one else did, ordered blood work from Quest and -- lo and behold -- it came back shriekingly positive while everyone else was burying their heads in the sand. She's extraordinarily adept, and I'm only scratching the surface of other rocks she's managed to look under that no other doctor thought to. Dr. Byrne has also pulled together a very skilled and compassionate front office who make booking appointments and asking questions easier than any other medical office I've ever dealt with. Rebecca and Teresa have helped with so many complicated things over the years and been completely unwavering. She's also very easy to book follow-ups with and always seems to make sure she has last-minute slots available. She's fundamentally there for her patients and, beyond her formidable intelligence, is also just a very reassuring soul when facing a seemingly endless stream of medical problems. Root Family Medicine is a vibrant reflection of Dr. Byrne, an unmatched PCP who is exceptionally smart, intrinsically open-minded and genuinely caring. I originally went to see Marisa for extreme anxiety and ongoing sleep issues, after trying what felt like every modality out there: somatic exercises, journaling, therapy, BIT, meditation, breath-work...you name it.
