The Living Museum is located on the south campus of the Creedmore Psychiatric Facility. Housed in a decaying former cafeteria, it is an active artistic space for psychiatric patients that is open to the public. Thousands of square feet of art, covering nearly every surface, in this haunted, surreal, AMAZING space. You could come here every day for a year and still see something new. The art is sophisticated, creative, unique, thought provoking, and is for a good cause. This is not only a fantastic art museum, but a wonderful therapeutic outlet for patients. I connected with one of the founders, Dr. Marton, as well as Dr. Reyhani, the director of exhibits. They were both warm, accommodating, and responsive. They helped me to see this exhibit, which I have now recommended to each of my friends who frequent New York. This is emotional. Intense. Maybe life changing. Best museum in New York, hands down.

It's got a homegrown and scrappy feel to it, and they champion and cultivate younger and relatively unknown artists. They've also showcased art in the past paying tribute to old New York - such as the exhibit last year featuring James and Karla Murphy's cool disappearing storefront signage photos. Their thursday night art openings resemble a house party with cool neighborhood kids than a gallery reception. And most importantly, the art is eminently accessible (reasonably priced). The woks were smaller, intimate and humorous. The paintings reminded me of funny illustrated memes that we see a lot of these says but these were better. The works were hung raw, unframed but affordable. The aesthestic of the display fit the look of the gallery. I feel the art offers everyone something to look, laugh and admire. However, we attended the opening reception for some recent/huge photos of a wonderful photographer - Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao - for whom we'd seen a superb exhibit of his photos at the MCNY a few years ago and then we couldn't resist buying the book connected to that (appropriately-titled "New York"). It was great meeting the photographer - and although this gallery is small, they've been creative with the available space. Also, the people working there were pleasant.

There's book shelves in the wall, a desk with information flyers, and great light with white linen curtains. The space opens up into several rooms-- and the gallery has a museum-like feel to it. The works are spread out, there was a room for video medium, two spacious rooms in the back -- with incredible natural lighting and detail, and another long hallway that was used as space for the art. The staff member didn't interact with us, as she was helping another couple in the space. Overall, the layout and the work displayed were awesome and definitely worth a visit.

I've been dying to visit another pop up interactive art gallery but since covid it's been…read moreextremely difficult, but as the city reopens I've been on the hunt for new and exciting places to visit and this was it. The hot pot lab is a food themed experience, each ticket sold is one dollar donated to food banks in nyc. It was refreshing to see the staff who by the way were extremely dope wearing masks and the rooms supplied with sanitizer wipes etc. this day it was empty so we had the entire exhibit to ourselves, each exhibit is themed after ingredients found in hot pot, my fav was the noodle wall and the fish balls. This was definitely a much needed day of fun . Check out the gift shop as well.
