Initially I found this company's products a little disturbing: A slightly unhinged-looking lady stared at me from a jar of almond butter, and I couldn't tell if her expression was seductive or homicidal. And the company's name reeked of Northern California brainwashing -- "Living Tree Community." Wait: Is it a company at all, or an end-of-the-world cult? Is this almond butter going to be like Jonestown Kool-Aid? I really didn't know what to think. Every week or so I'd visit the nut butter isle at Whole Foods and return the crazy flower child's gaze for a few heartbeats, then walk away. Then I read their webpage. Not all of it, mind you -- there's a lot of content there. I read just enough to become convinced that these people are passionate. Whether I agree with all of their views or not, they are clearly passionate. So I placed an order on-line. Here's what I bought: Tahini, almond butter (not roasted), cashew butter, Muir's trail mix, olive oil, walnuts, and chocolate treats filled with almond butter. I could go on about the virtues of these wonderful products for some time, but I prefer to be brief. Here's what I found: The chocolate bars with almond butter were amazing; the tahini is out of this world (I eat it on multigrain toast with orange marmalade); I've been buying trail mixes for years and years, being an avid backpacker, but the Living Tree Community's mix is unparalleled. (We all have our own preferences; since I tend to like a nut-heavy trail mix, I added the walnuts I bought from the Community to the John Muir trail mix, and that made it perfect. However, my wife likes to add the Muir trail mix as-is to her morning oatmeal, which makes it oh-so-indulgent.) The almond butter puts other almond butters to shame; it is in a category all its own. Since that initial order, I've also bought the Community's roasted almond butter and black sesame tahini (which I understand is unhulled, and while it doesn't have quite the nutritional content that their regular tahini does -- at least according to the standard measures printed on the jar's label -- I strongly suspect it is higher in certain phytonutrients). The Living Tree Community's products are pricier than their competitors'. And in my opinion, that's wholly justified; the difference in quality is undeniable. Yes, the labels seem a little weird, and the products have a "cult-ish" feel. Ironically, though, it's all the other junk in the market that evidences actual brainwashing. These people are the real deal; they are the peerless non-conformists who set standards that leave the bigger corporations nipping at their skyward heels. read more

It is great quality tahini that has a nice, creamy texture which reflects the good quality of their sesame seeds. Living Tree Community Foods does not grind the sesame seeds, but slice it. Then, they let them rest overnight and slice them again. This tahini makes terrific hummus, and is great on its own. Mixing it with a sweetener makes a sweet treat and it can also be made into a spread, filling, or dip. You can also use tahini in salad dressings, sauces, dips and more. I love this place! I have been eating organic vegan (mostly raw) for about 7 years, but my family has not. EVERYONE in my family loves their delicious and nutritious food. I have tried every seed, every nut, every superfood from everywhere and this place really is top notch. I can always trust that their product is pure and of the highest quality. Their products are often grown from heirloom seeds. My kids don't regularly like raisins, but they LOVE their raisins. Their dates are fresh and soft, not dry and hard like they are in the grocery store. They have sundried tomatoes without the salt. They offer organic dried persimmons--the only ones that I could find anywhere that are not processed on the same equipment as sulfured fruit! They have dried pineapple without the sugar--often hard to find in the grocery store. Their nuts and seeds are much fresher than those in the bulk department of the grocery store. Be sure to try their raw chocolate. The eight-fruit heirloom olive oil is the best olive oil anywhere. One product I particularly love is the Millennial Butter. A few ways to enjoy Millennial Butter-- 1. Instead of peanut butter in a sandwich (much more healthful for the kids) 2. With fresh fruit (it makes a great lunch or snack) 3. I just purchased Living Tree Community's Black Sesame Butter. Years ago I had purchased the product from local health food stores and groceries in the area but when stores stopped carrying the product I lost track of it. A local health food chain in my area recently started carrying another brand of black sesame butter, at a lower price and larger jar. Since they did not carry Living Tree's black sesame butter I gave it a try. It was an interesting "experiment." This brand's black sesame butter was not raw and the taste was nowhere near the quality of Living Tree's black sesame butter. There was also no information on the company website about where their product was sourced or anything about the company founders. Out of frustration I called Living Tree Community directly and ordered their product, which I was happy to see is still available. It arrived via FedEx next day, carefully packaged, with a personal message from the company founders (sent with all orders). I was thrilled that their black sesame butter is still of the high quality and lovely taste that I remember. Also of importance, is Living Tree Community Foods is based in the SF Bay Area and uses US products. When I called to ask about the black sesame seeds I was told where they were grown in Mexico since they are not grown here. It is an absolutely sensual, smoothly spreadable and melt-in-our-mouths nut butter that we can indulge in spoonfuls to satiate the physical hunger for sustenance and emotional craving for that any-time sweet delight. It's possible I've become dependent on almond butter from Living Tree Community Foods. I was taken aback upon first spoonful (yeah, I eat it straight from the jar). It was so naturally sweet that I thought sugar was added! I actually emailed them for reassurance since ingredients simply show "organic almonds". And yes, I was reassured the ingredients are, only, organic almonds. I understand it can be considered expensive. Unfortunately our food industry requires a number of expensive hoops for small manufacturers to jump through, if these manufactures are providing clean, healthy, and nutritious foods. But since my own health conditions have required me to change my food choices entirely, I've learned that spending *more* money on better/cleaner foods is still *less* expensive than what I HAD been buying previously. We've just received our second order from LTCF and cannot say enough good things about them. Their products are of the highest quality and their customer service is excellent (there was an issue with an item in our second order that customer service resolved immediately and generously). As for the products, there is no better gluten free pasta out there (and our family has tried dozens), and the same goes for the teff powder (the only source of pesticide-free in the US that I've been able to find), the coconut butter, and the raisins. The trail mix is out of this world. Also, they include a pound of raisins free with orders placed by 'glorious elders' and nursing mothers -- what an honor!
