I don't want to knock this place completely, but they have certain things going on that annoy me. I play with triggers, but the heads on the kick drums are so old and loose and poorly maintained, that you cannot even get enough of a response on them for the trigger to pick it up. And this is in the many rooms we've tried. On the plus, they have tons of rooms and generally decent parking, although prepare to have to park far away in the parking lot. On the big minuses, is their refusal to book any room starting on an odd number hour. So, for example, you cannot book a room from 1-3 pm. They insist you start at noon, when they open or at 2pm, so they don't have to eat the 1 hour from 12-1pm. I've never faced this at any other rehearsal studio in Los Angeles. They will book you from 12-3, however, and then just eat the hour from 3-4pm. Huh?! Like, dude, your logic makes zero sense. I'd rather go to Grooveworks in Long Beach or Summit in Pasadena. Many other good spots without such arbitrary rules. Luckily won't have to go back. Trying to talk logic to the owner is like beating your head against a wall. read more

There are plenty of complaints about equipment being broken, aside from mine. Larry's accusation, that my review was somehow fake, is just an owner who refuses to take accountability for neglect, and has too much ego to fix the real problems. First of all let me congratulate Derek O'Brien on opening up this fine establishment. My band, The Angry Lemons, practices here before shows to get our bearings on right and the guys here awesome. If you show up late, no problem; If you want to book an earlier time before they open they take their lunches with them. The guys before them at Basement were kinda douches, always on our case about the time. They also do guitar repairs and recordings, however, they are still in construction to make the studios a lot bigger and better. They are stocked with amps, drums (w/ cymbals), and a PA as well. Derek O'Brien is a nice guy. He's used to drum for a bunch of OC punk bands such as The Adolescents, Agent Orange, and Social Distortion. Suzie Q's Fun Facts: DOB is right around the corner from Hothouse Studios, which is much better and is run by nicer people. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~ I rehearsed here recently with my rock cover band. In our particular rehearsal room, the monitors were mounted to the wall, each on a separate corner. Rather than angling them inwards towards the center of the room, they were inexplicably pointed straight towards the back wall. I'm a professional singer. I rehearse and gig multiple times a week. In short, I know what good sound is, and I know when I'm unable to hear myself. And I could barely hear myself at all in this room, even with only the bass player playing. So I asked the guy at the front desk for help. He came in and fiddled with the controls for about 2.5 seconds, and with no one else in the band playing (but me singing), pronounced that the sound "should be plenty loud enough." Um, really? Since when is a soundcheck done with no one else in the band playing? I told him firmly that I wasn't able to hear myself, and that I could tell it wasn't loud enough. I also added that I rehearsed in other studios all the time, so I knew what the levels were that I needed. The guy turned around and gave me serious attitude. He said something like: "Well, I play all the time too, and I'm an expert, and I can tell you this is plenty loud enough." I couldn't believe it. What a complete prick. He basically did the absolute minimum, and then gave us attitude about it. Sure enough, I couldn't hear myself at all during the rehearsal. I stopped even trying to make myself heard, in an effort to avoid vocal strain. But I wasn't going to go back to this guy and ask for help again. I'd already been rebuffed once. I will not return. And this is a PSA to warn other singers, especially, to stay away from this place. read more

Dereks studio, as I call it, is the brainchild of a punk rock godfather of the west coast. And He understands the needs of struggling rockers of many different genres and ages and languages! The rooms are cheap, the parking is tough to get to sometimes, so get their early for your rented time in order to unload and suss out a space for Yourself. There is additional equipment to rent as you need, sodas and energy drinks to give you a sugar boost, and small snacks. I stopped playing music for a while so I hadn't been here in two years. I finally started playing again and was back here the last few weeks and damn, I loved this place before and I can't say enough how awesome this place is now. Since my hiatus they really upped their music store. They had brand new ESP guitars on the wall, Blackstar Amps, tons of strings, straps, picks, pedals, drum heads, you name it, they had it. All quality stuff, not low quality unknown brands. I stocked up on Ernie Ball strings and picked up a new heavy duty cable while I was there and the best part was the price...all the gear is at or below Guitar Center or Musicians Friend. I will now come here for all my needs (there is a Keeley pedal I have my eye on). I have rehearsed in all 6 rooms and they are all great. They all have their own characteristics and as long as your band understands dynamics and everyone doesn't turn to 11, all these rooms are great but my favorite is the newer Room A. I like the hardwood floors and the acoustics treatment is great (the sofa is a plus). Lastly, the staff is great. Alway super friendly and helpful. They are all in bands (some well known) and know their stuff but really down to earth and I can't thank them enough for that. I believe it rubs off on everyone who rehearses because even the bands you run into in the halls or outside all seem to be really cool and friendly as well. (I arrived the other day and as I stepped out of the car the fella next to me made eye contact and complimented my choice of music (I was bumping Thin Lizzy) then I walked by two guys who were chatting outside by the door that were kind enough to says what's up and step aside for my gear...by the time I got to my room I was in a great mood and it lead to a great rehearsal). I never get dirty looks or hear mumbling when you walk by and that is sort of rare at other spots. I guess it's true that you attract like minded people and this will always be my go to spot to rehearse. I didn't want to leave a review because it is hard to get a spot here because they always fill up and my selfish side does not want to let more people find out about them but in the end this really is a great establishment that deserves the recognition and a real review (there are some reviews that I am pretty sure are fake or posted by a complete imbecile ). I've been rehearsing at D.O.B. for the past 6 years, and have had such a great experience with the staff, sound, and rooms...Room 2, and 4 have by far been my favorite to rehearse in. Visited DOB last night and my friends and I were very pleased. I've been to bedrock and sound bite in eagle rock and DOB is just as good. My only complaint is that they offer cymbals with the drums but the cymbals they offer are in such bad shape that they are not usable anymore. I always bring my cymbals so that wasn't a problem for me but I would imagine it would be a problem for someone that didn't bring their cymbals. Maybe don't offer the cymbals anymore. One word. AMAZING. I've been meaning to write a review for a while now but never got to it. I went in a few months back to practice on the drums for about 2 hours . This was my first time going by myself , since my boyfriend would always pay for me I assumed the price was the same . As I'm about to leave I guess they realized I was by myself & I was only playing the drums , no guitar... So they actually tell me that it's cheaper when Drums are only being used so they returned some of my money & charged what was to only be charged. The fact that they were honest was great , they really didn't have to tell me anything & I wouldn't have known the difference but they did anyway. If anyone is looking for a studio , this is the place. It's a bit of a drive for me but I wouldn't chose any other place. Plus their equipment isn't bad ! read more

Im not going to bore everyone with my resume and tell you how long Ive been a pro musician. ....Lets just say a very long time. If you are going to run a business selling space for rehearsal, then you should provide pro audio equipment, and have it set up in a manner that is conducive to a good experience in the space you are selling. Neither of those things are happening at DOB. I can't speak to the courtesy of the staff because I was not the one who arranged the reservation. HOWEVER, I can't even describe my frustration when I arrived for a 3 hour rehearsal and realized (after a few minutes of useless adjustments) that I was going to have to sing through this ridiculous excuse for a PA all night. The monitors (an off brand that I have never heard of in all my years attending NAMM) are mounted in a way that guarantees feedback from vocal mics. The tiny soundboard (also an off brand) was not much help either. My hope is that the owners address the setup in room 4 - please. I WAS happy that there was a couch to sit on! I used to jam here back in the day and was happy with the rehearsal spaces. However, since returning this past month after a 5 year hiatus, I was not too impressed. The room the put us in had a busted speaker and was super hot. My drummer was miserably hot and even with our second visit, it didn't seem much better. Recording at DOB studios has been a huge breakthrough. We always knew our songs were great. After recording here, everybody else finally thinks so too. Derek is not only an extraordinary engineer he will help you make the artistic choices to take your music to the next level. Together with Stan's wonderful arrangements, I now can't think of our songs any other way. The equipment is all top of the line, with a $6000 microphone that was just a joy to sing into. I am downright startled by how amazing the quality of the recording was given the reasonable price. Derek has a reserved demeanor and can seem a little scary at first, especially given the long list of impressive acts he has worked with. But don't be late, don't be flakey and be respectful and you are going to get along just fine and he is going to make you sound like a million bucks. read more

I have spent some time and spent a hard earned dollar at D.O.B. Sound Rehearsal Studio. I can honestly say it was money and time that was well spent. I have rehearsed there on numerous occasions and the sound acoustics and studio space were perfect. Derek who is the main gent over there is also a renowned drummer. I took a series of drum/theory lessons from Derek. Even after playing drums for over 30 plus years, I was grateful that there were so many things to learn from him that were priceless and beneficial. Over time I took another try with Derek when it came to studio recording for some upcoming record releases. As a drummer and as a vocalist, Derek helped me achieve what I was hoping to achieve on my recordings. Derek's knowledge, personal studio experience, and patience were all assets to the process. I will be returning soon for future recordings as I have found a consistent and ideal studio to record at. The place is clean, parking is good, everyone there is super friendly and helpful. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. Worst customer service ever and from Larry, one of the co-owners, nonetheless. Brought my dad here to have them "clean up" some of his really rough cd recordings. Larry was great at first via phone and email and told us to leave the cd so he could clean up one of the tracks as a demo of his services before he charged us anything. We left the the cd with him in late September; left our contact number and even called and emailed several times. We never received a response. Was hoping someone, maybe the other owner, Derek would at least get back to us and let us know they wouldn't be providing services as promised. Couldn't even get that courtesy. Way to do business.
