March 2023, two adult females planning to move away from downtown Portland, Maine, only across town, were left feeling taken advantage of by Local Muscle, and now DO NOT recommend using them. When asked ahead of time if they would wrap antique furniture items with padding and elastic bands, Local Muscle said yes, but showed up and said they do not do that. When 4 men showed up LATE, one woman client specified to the leader to kindly move largest and heaviest items first, as anything smaller remaining at the end, the two women would move themselves in their car. The women had placed all items near the apartment door, to be easy to carry out the door of the apartment. Several hours later, after one man only stood by the elevator the whole time, the leader man told the client woman they were about to finish in about 10 minutes, take lunch, then go to the new home and unload. The woman had been going back and forth to the moving truck and knew it was only half full, and most of the largest and heaviest items were still sitting in the apartment. The woman asked the man in charge to help her understand, after she clearly specified in the beginning that the team of hired men were to move the largest and heaviest items first, why had they NOT done so? The man in charge said, We move smaller things first and largest things last, so once we arrive at the new home, the largest items are unloaded first. The woman said this was not what she requested, not how most movers move in her own experience, and now they would be left with the largest and heaviest items they could not fit in their car or lift and put into a rented truck on their own. The man in charge said, Well you can hire us *for another day* like tomorrow to finish the job. (RED FLAG: Fraud, swindle, hoax, scheme!) The woman replied, First, Local Muscle had no openings for yesterday or tomorrow, which is why we scheduled you for today; and second, we must be out of the apartment by tomorrow, so TODAY IS ALL WE HAVE with you guys, which is why we tried to be very clear that you are needed to help move our HEAVIEST AND LARGEST ITEMS. Also, why would we pay you *more money to hire you for a second day* to move what we asked you to move the first day? The man in charge asked the woman to walk around and show him the largest items (as she had done previously). She did, and he had his team load some of the items. The two women traveled to the new place, met the Local Muscle team of men, and they had added two more *so their unload* would go quicker. (Why have two more on the tail end and not the front end to help load all of the items and fill the truck?) The men finished unloading, and the man in charge said the charge would be FAR MORE than the original estimate, plus they asked for a tip and stood there looking at the woman who had to approve the charge. What a waste of money and time. An additional van needed to be rented, loaded, and unloaded by the women for the items Local Muscle left behind. Was this because the move was from Commercial Street, a presumption that these two women were rich and could easily be swindled? STAY AWAY FROM LOCAL MUSCLE. BEWARE. read more

Absolutely horrible experience with these guys. They showed up late and skipped out early for another job without completing ours. They did not use the dividers or pads to cover large items and they were damaged because of poor packing. They improperly stowed items and wasted precious cargo space. I booked Local Muscle Movers for a move of eight smallish items of furniture (bed frame, queen mattress, loveseats, chest of drawers etc) and about thirty-five prepacked boxes of different sizes from midcoast Maine to NYC. This was organized about four months in advance (as it turned out the move had to be rescheduled for weather and house closing issues) and I spoke to three different people and received a quote of over $6,500. This seemed quite large for a two day move for three men but I was assured that having given extensive details that it would all go smoothly on the days involved and given that I am an older woman on my own with three pets then I needed help. On both days, the team showed up more than an hour late with no notification whatsover. On the first day, this meant that someone was waiting in Maine for them for over 72 minutes despite the fact that they had called the day before to make sure that we had snow plowed. They came unprepared to pack the items listed and had no mattress cover and limited furniture packing materials (and failed to secure those items that were wrapped so there were multiple minor damages). On the following day in NYC, they arrived late, the driver had a meltdown and I could reach no one in the office for several hours to address my concerns. The unloading in NYC was always going to be a challenge but to arrive without food, with a nervous team, with someone who could barely climb a staircase without breaking a sweat and to leave items to get dirty on the street and so on. Dylan referred to me as "she" multiple times throughout the day which was ageist and demeaning given that the team knew my name but was a clear indication of how I was being treated despite the fact that I threw no surprises and they were the ones who were disorganized, disrespectful and damaged my possessions with a failure of preparation. I gave ample opportunity for someone to address my concerns after the move also but heard nothing and just paid the bill in full despite the fact that this was not a concierge move but something that resembled a uhaul version for $2-3,000 and not the amount charged. It created a huge amount of stress and given that I had tried to prepare then it was also deeply disappointing. They moved me well two years before in Maine but are not prepared for more sophisticated and complicated moves and should neither be engaging in them nor charging these prices. read more

I've used Local Muscle several times in the past, and have always recommend them highly -- until now. In fact, when I rented my 4th floor walk-up apartment, I even threw in an hour of their moving time as a renter's incentive. HOWEVER, the last experience I've had with them, and the experience of even trying to get someone to call me back about my concerns has been horrendous. Here's what happened: 1) I was moving out of the fourth-floor walk-up apartment (which Local Muscle moved me into a few years ago). 2) Because I needed to budget carefully, I meticulously wrote up an itemized list of every piece of furniture that would need to be moved. I also called and specifically requested that the estimate include four movers so they could do a relay-style move, like they did when they moved me in. This means one person on each of the three floors and one in the truck. This way, no one runs more than one flight of stairs and gets tired. 3) I purposefully overestimated the number of boxes and miscellaneous things. I said 75 boxes and on the day of the move (after everything was done) I got in writing from the movers that my list was correct and I did not have more than 75 boxes. So, to summarize, I meticulously told them what needed to be moved, that it was a fourth-floor walk-up and that I wanted four people. They gave me an estimate. I said ok. The day of the move came. Long story short: 1) The total cost was DOUBLE what they estimated 2) I have discovered that they piled many boxes marked "very fragile, keep on top" BENEATH boxes labeled "Books, very heavy." This has caused many things to break. Unfortunately, it's apparent that they just didn't read the labels on the boxes at all. 3) I have called twice after the move, asking to speak to someone. I got Gabe the first time, Maura the second. Gabe said he'd look into the issue, but it's now been a week and no one has called back. Really sub-par and disappointing. read more

I had moved with Local Muscle once before and had an okay experience. This time, however, was so bad, I am forced to take legal action against them. We only had one truck-full to move and were moving only a short distance, but they managed to ruin a marble coffee table, box springs and mattresses and furniture and damage walls and stairs in both locations. If this wasn't bad enough, Local Muscle continues to dodge my calls and emails. Initially, they said they would make good on the damage, however, several weeks later, it is clear that is not going to happen. To give you some indication as to how bad our experience was....we covered every box spring and mattress in mattress bags; however, they said they made it harder to move so they removed them and then dragged them along their filthy truck without protecting them at all. The result, filthy and torn mattresses and box springs. My husband repeatedly asked them to cover the furniture with blankets, but they refused resulting in many scratches, scrapes and chipped furniture. When I saw that the marble top to my coffee table was chipped in several places, the movers response was "it's fine" "you can sand it down"....really? Nothing about our experience with the movers or office staff was remotely positive. You get what you pay for....pay for a quality moving company or plan on replacing all your furniture. read more

Be very, very cautious. Muscle and hustle they have. But the critical component of moving ~ how does your stuff look when it arrives? ~ was simply unacceptable. After much back and forth with a very stand up General Manager, they paid to replace my damaged dryer door ($376). But all of the other damage due to improper protection was to be reimbursed at 60 cents per pound. (So if you've got a high end 180 lb. cherry dining table that gets wrecked, you'll get $108.) Ummm, that's no insurance at all!?! To pour salt into the wound, I was told they would deliver the ladder they forgot move to my new place. It's been 2 months ~ crickets. I really wanted to recommend this company and tried to work with them. But the sour taste in my mouth (or the scratches on my furniture) hasn't gone away. read more

I've moved with local muscle a few times, and had friends who moved with them both personally and for business. Before my last encounter, I would have given them a very positive review, but this last experience was so bad that I am about to tell you all about it in great detail with pictures. I'd ask if you were ready, but there is no way to be ready for the excessive and unnecessary difficulty that this company put me through. Let me tell you my tale, O Internet. I encourage you to get a beverage and get comfortable, have a good laugh at my expense and don't make the same mistake I did. I recently had to move from Portland, Maine, to St. Paul, Minnesota after living in Maine for six years. During my time in Maine, as in all other places I have lived, I strove to support local businesses. I had moved once previously with Local Muscle and that had gone fine: at that time, I had moved about a half a mile between apartments inside Portland, and I had packed my belongings myself. This time I found myself with a larger workload at my job, and since the last move I had also developed rheumatoid arthritis, which unfortunately meant I couldn't pack my own stuff because my hands don't work well enough anymore for me to do that kind of repetitive gripping and lifting. Fine, right? I can hire people to do that, put money into the local economy, not have to take as much time off work, and it'll be less stressful. I called Local Muscle and arranged a date for this, and also a date to load my truck. On the appointed date, four young men showed up to pack all my worldly belongings. Three of them told me they had never packed anyone's stuff before. They seemed to have no idea that it doesn't work to put a bunch of heavy stuff in a large box because then you'll have to lift the box. They had to be told to wrap my dishes in paper - they were originally going to put them in a box in a pile. Books were bent. Some of my framed artwork was wrapped appropriately and some was just shoved in boxes at odd angles. I couldn't see everything that was going on because there was one of me and four of them, and I went to get them coffee at one point in addition to some donuts from Holy Donut, which is just down from my old place. It should have been a warning sign to me that the packing went so much faster than originally estimated, but as stated I had never had anyone else pack my belongings before and I didn't know what to expect. The next day four young men came to load the truck. Several of them had also never done this. I had hired another company to do the driving, because doing that with Local Muscle was cost prohibitive. No problem, right? The driver of the truck gave me some recommendations, including getting moving blankets and ratchet straps, which I did. Local Muscle used the blankets, but had to be told to put one under my mattress so it didn't get totally trashed by the vibrations of the truck. They wrapped my TV well, but failed to secure my dresser, my sewing machine, a few of my bookcases, parts of my bed, or most of the boxes. This means everything slid around like crazy on the road. Some of my stuff was damaged and some was destroyed. They ignored the ratchet straps almost completely, despite my request that they use them to secure things. When truck arrived in St. Paul, it became apparent that things were worse than a little overconfidence. In addition to not securing things, they had packed heavy boxes on top of light ones, making all imbalances worse and crushing some of the lighter boxes. The men who unloaded my truck were horrified enough by Local Muscle's incompetence that they had me come and start taking photos so I could document damage rather than just having me stay out of their way. Let me offer some detail: I had one bookcase completely destroyed; another was half destroyed; my dresser was seriously scraped up and one of the handles was broken off and broken in half; my grandmother's silver bowl was dented; three of my framed artworks had the glass shattered because Local Muscle just shoved a bunch of picture frames into a box with no padding at all; a photo a close friend had professionally framed now has a big dent in the frame; some of my tubes of paint ruptured; something went through my mirror and it was shattered so badly it wasn't even a good halloween joke; a number of my books were bent and damaged; a number of DVD cases were cracked; and a bunch of my bedding is stained because hey, soft stuff doesn't need to go in boxes or bags, right? There's literally nothing like getting to your new place and thinking that you're finally about to be done moving and hearing the sound of broken glass as you move and open boxes. Overall I feel that Local Muscle was extremely careless with my belongings and the people they sent to help me move didn't know what they were doing. To add insult to injury, Local Muscle has refused to return my calls or emails. DO NOT HIRE. read more

Best money I have ever spent. Each worker worth their weight in gold. If you are contemplating moving yourself with a rented uhaul, a couple of friends and some beer and pizza, or hiring a moving company, trust me, Local Muscle movers is the best gift you will ever give yourself! Your friends will thank you too. The online quote allows you to be detailed in your explanation of the move and they quickly get back to you by phone. A deposit is made, and booking is easy. They call to confirm, and will let you know if they are running late. We ended up paying on the low end of our quote. We had a 8:30 "reservation" and they called at 8:30 on the dot to say they would be 10 minutes late. Four nice guys showed up all together, introduced themselves, and got started right away moving our stuff from our third story apartment to their spacious moving truck. Things were blanketed and secured in the truck as needed. We had to pay extra to have them hoist our couch off our deck (only way to get it out!) but it was awesome they were willing to do this. They worked extremely quickly and I did not see them take any breaks, even though climbing three flights of stairs over and over is quite a work out. Unloading was quick and easy too. Would absolutely use again and recommend! Tips- -if they say on the phone you need more workers than you think you do- trust them. Many hands make quick work. -have water ready -tip them! We have used LMM twice now. The first time to move our stuff from our Uhaul we drove from Florida into a VERY CRAMPED SECOND FLOOR apartment with the smallest of hallways. They did a phenomenal job! We had 2 large awkward pieces of furniture that we were worried about and they handled it like it was nothing!! We were super satisfied and impressed! When we bought our new home a few weeks ago we decided to hire LMM again to move us from Portland to Topsham. Again they were quick, clean and just plain awesome!!!! The job was contracted at 3 hours and they did it in 2 hours and 15 min and only charged us for the time they spent doing it. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!! read more

My first clue that I was dealing with non-professionals was when the fellow came to give an estimate. When he asked if he could park in my building's driveway, I asked how long it would take, because there's a 15-minute limit. His response: "I don't know, I've never been in your apartment." But I let it slide. He was nice enough when he visited my place, but when the estimate came, I was confused. First of all, there was no "bottom line" estimate, but a mish-mash of various charges. The line item for man-hours seemed low to me. The estimate said it would take four movers four hours to pack up my entire apartment, but I would be charged $50 per man-hour (i.e. $200/hr) for anything over that. This is a classic underbid, and is, at best, unprofessional, most likely unethical, and could even be against the law (similar to "bait-and-switch" tactics). When I questioned this low bid, I received a very rude response from someone else at the company. In the end, I went with Liberty Bell. They did a good job, but it took six movers eight hours to pack my apartment. This is a difference of $1600 from Local Muscle's initial estimate--just for packing. The same numbers apply to the move, so the total underbid was about $3200. Understand: they would have charged me for this excess under their contract terms, as well as a few other nickel-and-dime charges. In short--Local Muscle was rude, unprofessional... maybe even dishonest. read more

Just had the pleasure of not moving my stuff! Called Local Muscle a week prior and booked them for a February moving date. TB, GC, and BS arrived at our storage unit with their truck, a smile, and a wave. Despite the fact that we were getting a mild snowstorm (8"-12"), these guys were in excellent spirits. They were friendly, efficient and flexible. Everything you need when you are undertaking the craptastic task of moving. We had mild PTSD from putting our stuff into storage, but Local Muscle was just the therapeutic agent we needed to relieve our woes. Fast forward 3.5 hours and all our furniture, gidgets and gadgets, were comfortably placed in our house without us lifting a finger. Just as a reference point, we had a 10' x 20' storage unit that was almost full. These guys moved all of it, even the big stuff, for around $400. For what I would have paid to rent the UHaul + milage + time, this was some of the best money I've ever spent. Now I know why fancy people don't move their sh*t! Go. Call Local Muscle. read more

We hired Local Muscle Movers (out of the SoPo location) to do an in-house move, last week. We moved into our new home last July and immediately starred an attic conversion into a sewing room, when it was finished there were about 80 boxes, tables, chairs, sewing machines, etc. that had to be moved moved from the basement up to the attic (3rd floor). We could have done it ourselves 40 years ago, but these young men did the job in just a couple of hours. They were courteous, professional, considerate of our brand new walls, fresh paint and most important they were strong. Their cheerfulness was infectious which made the time fly. Our original move in July by another local company was a nightmare, so I was pretty tense about a repeat experience but these Muscle kids came through. I'd call them again in a flash! read more

Much as I would like to rate a local company more highly, I can't. I've been calling from my cell phone for over a week, and getting nothing but a 'line-busy' signal. When I emailed them, I got a reply from (someone named David at) a different address than the one I emailed. When I responded to their reply, they never got back to me. Finally, someone named Carina called me (on the same cell phone I've been using to call them, which could never get through) and let me know they had an opening for next week. I told them I'd take it. Today, I got a call from Laura, letting me know that they'd been booked for this 'entire month' for 'more than thirty days'. I tell her that I'd been told they had one for next week, and she asks to call me back in fifteen minutes, then hangs up on me. An hour later, she calls to tell me that she's not comfortable with the size of the move, and that I should contact another company. I hope that the movers are really great, but I can't say anything good about their customer service. read more

I called to see if they could help me start moving to my home in Cumberland. The guy really was not cooperative and didn't listen to a word I was saying. All I was trying to do was get someone here to look at moving stuff in my basement before moving three floors of living space. "Oh, you gotta do our online form for that" (even though this was part of a huge move / full house, not some small gig); "Oh, we don't have time to send someone out" (even though I am in absolutely no rush at all); "Oh, our schedule is really booked" (err, I am not moving for a while) - THEN, CLICK! I like paying for quality (from management to the line staff) and try in all cases to go the local route - but the guy who answered the phone was a real jerk. "Local" unfortunately is sometime synonymous with "couldn't make it working with others"; and "Muscle" unfortunately is sometimes synonymous with "meat head". read more

They were early both days, moved quickly and efficiently and were a pleasure to work with. The looked over the places first to evaluate and explain how they would do the move, super great. We were on a tight budget and hired these guys to move primarily the big, heavy items, plus some but not all of our boxes and smaller things. Max replied promptly to my inventory sheet with an accurate and fair estimate, then followed up a couple of times before moving day. On the day, Alex, Tim, and Matt were extremely professional and worked quickly and safely to move everything within the agreed-upon schedule. They didn't mark a wall or put a scratch on any of our belongings. I would not hesitate to hire Local Muscle again or to recommend them to my friends. read more

First, I want to say that these guys were kind, and professional. Dan worked with me on coming up with a plan for my move and was very patient when I called with lots of questions. I was concerned that my walls would get banged up, marked and/or dented in both houses but that wasn't the case. They took extra care in the old and new home. There were a few minor scuff marks but that's to be expected when you're moving lots of heavy items. Nothing that a little paint cover-up can't fix. I have a special piece of furniture from my parents that I was worried about. They took extra care to put bubble wrap and blankets when they moved it! That being said, they did a particularly exceptional job moving a console piano from the second floor to the garage. They expertly maneuvered it around corners and down the stairs without damaging anything!! The day was pouring rain but they were able to move everything into our new home and set up every bed and piece of furniture. They even called in reinforcements when it was getting late. It has been quite a while since I used Local Muscle, but just the other day I was discussing moving with a friend and couldn't say enough good things about my experience with them. I move frequently and it was by far the best move I've done. They were laid-back but professional and just did the job right and fast so I could get one with my day. DO NOT USE THESE GUYS !! I used them about 5 months back. They showed a half hour late.. The workers were unprofessional acting and unkempt looking. I think they must use day laborers. They smoked near the truck and while carrying stuff out and the smell got on my stuff. I asked them to wipe their feet and they got mud all over the carpet of my home. After picking up my stuff at my old home, they took 1.5 hours to get to my new home which was less than a half hour away. So basically they disappeared while still on my dime. I also was pretty shocked to see that a box and a bag of costume jewelry that I had packed up in my stuff was MISSING. The box had that I had taped shut had clearly been opened and tampered with It was nothing of great monetary value but of great sentiment to me. I did not say anything. How can you really prove this ? I did not think I had to stand and babysit grown men from a so called "reputable" company. Upon delivery there were scratches and dents on an almost new Ethan Allen table. A 2 month old couch had a rip on the side. Some of my stuff smelled like smoke. I have known 2 other people who used this company. They both had negative experiences. Neither of these folks are computer savvy enough to use yelp. Therefore I had to warm others to NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They are messy, sneaky and disrespectful. read more
