During a gloomy rainy weekend in October 2018, I stopped in front of a tent at the Forest Hills…read morestreet fair. A woman with a warm smile stood in front of a table with various flyers. She told me about a unique yoga practice here in Forest Hills. I was skeptical, assuming that this would be an ordinary yoga studio. She invited me to take an introductory session and I signed up thinking, why not? I had been looking for some sort of exercise routine so I could start here. A couple of days later, I walked out of that intro session knowing that it had changed my life forever. Although this is is categorized as yoga, the classes include an all body workout which is tailored to individuals of all ages (yes, from children to elderly folk) and of all abilities. There are classes which build up a sweat for those who are looking to strengthen various muscle groups and other much lighter classes to build flexibility. There are multiple classes at all hours of the day to suit your schedule and numerous fun community events to join in on. Regardless of which classes you attend, the euphoric feeling of getting out there and moving your body is the same. The location is a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere with encouraging instructors and a friendly group of welcoming individuals. I began to take as many classes that I could and I started to see the changes in my body. I was stronger, calmer, more flexible, and releasing tension that I couldn't believe I was holding. The woman I met at the street fair was Master Amy; she is a learned instructor who is passionate about spreading love, honesty, and helping others to overcome their obstacles. Through classes and sessions with her, she showed me how to find the potential to climb out of this rabbit hole that I was trapped in. I never knew how much emotional pain manifested as physical pain in the human body. I embarked on a journey to identify these pains, detox my body of the rigidity and numbness it caused, and train my mind to better handle stress. If you go to classes often, I can personally guarantee that this practice can shift your perspectives and change your life for the better. I hope that in coming here you discover what you've been looking for. Sending positive vibes, always ~

I'm hooked--this studio feels like home!…read more I took my first class at Living Yoga in May 2025 and haven't stopped coming since! From day one, I was completely drawn in by the positive energy, welcoming community, and incredible variety of classes. Whether you're looking for a powerful Hot Yoga session, a gentle restorative class, or something in between, they truly offer something for everyone. The teachers are phenomenal--each brings their own unique style, passion, and heart to their teaching. I also love the workshops and special events they host. This past New Year's Eve, I had the amazing experience of welcoming 2026 with a midnight yoga and meditation class. It was the perfect way to set the tone for the year--centered, peaceful, and intentional. On January 1st, I took Merlin's class and was blown away. She greeted us with flowers, a note that read "I am love," and the most uplifting energy. Every class since has been a profound journey inward, helping me connect to myself in ways I can hardly put into words. I am so grateful to all the teachers at Living Yoga for sharing their gifts with such dedication. If you're looking for a studio that nourishes your body, mind, and spirit--this is it. Highly recommend!

It's a perfect blend of breathwork, stretches along with spirituality and Yoga foundations. Merlin is amazing. Great energy and she has a very healing, relaxed vibe to her. HIGHLY recommend this class, as well as any other class this studio offers. The other instructors I have taken classes with are also amazing. Denise, Mi Han and Sabrina to name a few. All of them are very welcoming and loving. Go check it out!

I personally find the walk longer when coming from the J train and getting off at Myrtle Avenue. The L train is about the same distance, though if you are not familiar with the area it can be a little confusing to find the L train. I visited both Kala Yoga locations during my intro week, which I purchased for forty dollars. One location is in Williamsburg and the other is in Bushwick. The Williamsburg studio is more convenient for me personally. It is smaller but cozy and easy to get to. You can take the J train, get off at Marcy Avenue, and walk over to Driggs Avenue without much trouble. The staff at both locations are lovely. Very nice to talk to. Unfortunately, I was not able to fully enjoy my intro week due to my schedule, but I did manage to take two heated vinyasa classes. Both instructors were great. I especially enjoyed Jake's Sunday class at twelve fifteen at the Williamsburg location. I really wanted to take other classes to try different instructors. Definitely next time I will. There is a clear difference between warm, heated, and hot classes. The heated classes felt good and comfortable. They were not humid like most hot yoga studios. I doubt the room reaches ninety degrees. It felt closer to eighty. That said, the heat was comfortable, though I personally would not mind it being slightly warmer. The Bushwick location has a wider layout. There is one yoga room and it is long and spacious. The natural lighting is more on the mild side. The Williamsburg location is smaller and more cozy, with better natural lighting. The yoga room there is wide but not overly large like the one in Bushwick. Both studios are very clean. Mats are hung instead of folded, which I appreciated. Props are available, and if you do not bring a mat or towel, you can request one. The Bushwick location has small lockers, while Williamsburg uses cubbies. They also sell merchandise, and I ended up purchasing a few items. Overall, whether you are closer to Bushwick or Williamsburg, Kala Yoga was a great experience. I appreciate studios that prioritize cleanliness, community, and good energy. The pricing is also very reasonable compared to many other yoga studios. I will definitely be going back.

But more recently, I came upon the Meetup meditation group that is run by Genesis Tree of Life. I fell in love with that group. They have had the potlucks I was looking for and a great attitude around enjoying life, food and kirtan. They are now pioneering a Laughter Yoga program in the area. Later, I tried out the style of yoga that their studio offers. This is a mild, but ever-changing hatha practice. This yoga is derived from the old school--highly contemplative and mellow, and yet physically challenging. It features small, intimate studio spaces and lots of personal attention. Edita can be teaching in a mixed level format, wherein absolute beginners could practice with experienced intermediate level practitioners. Brigitte is alignment-oriented and you will wind up finding your edge in the most fundamental of poses!! There is no room here for the before-class intimidating, competitive, show-offy vibe like I see elsewhere ... There are no rococo dharma talks ... and there are no teachers paying attention to just the future yoga rock stars ... The expiration date on the class pack may not work all the time with how often I could get to this studio, but they are home-practitioner-friendly. This is yoga just like yoga class used to be ... classes unlike other yoga studios in the area with their trendy-wannabe yogis.
