I've lived in Rutherford for 4yrs now and my biggest regret was not coming to Shiva Shanti sooner…read more In the last year or so I've had severe back pain due to a herniated disc and four degenerative discs with arthritis. To say it's been stressful mentally is an understatement. Along with corrective chiropractic therapy, I decided to take up Yoga to strengthen not only my body but my mind as well. It's now been two months or so and Shiva Shanti has changed my life. The peace, strength, and positive energy I find in each class is amazing. Each teacher is unique in their own way and I've yet to have a negative experience with any of them. I've had class (please note I've only taken beginner and restorative classes) with Niomi, Mary, Sarah, Jordan, Rob, Kristy and Theresa and they are all phenomenal! All of them are knowledgeable, and caring; paying close attention to their students to ensure they are flowing properly. Each ask about injuries to ensure they can assist you in modifying poses so you don't injure yourself further. The space is not big but its never been so overcrowded that I felt uncomfortable. Both, Mary and Felise have dogs - Pipa and Buddha. The dogs are very small and extremely friendly. I personally enjoy their company and haven't had any negative experiences with them. They are adorable and I feel they bring a healing vibe to the class. Finally, I would suggest you take the negative reviews with a grain of salt and come to Shiva Shanti and experience it for yourself. If you don't like it, then you don't have to come back, but if your experience is anything like mine, you won't ever want to leave! Namaste ‍

I haven't done yoga in over a year and Iwona gave me the best pointers. I was looking for a studio that would be physically challenging but a studio that left me feeling mentally clear was of the utmost importance. Shiva shanti is just that! Most NJ yoga studios I have visited tend to be very commercial but Shiva Shanti is authentic and has a community feel. The studio is small and quaint, I personally prefer more intimate classes. Tons of street parking outside the studio as well. I'm hoping to stick to my daily practice and hope all of the other instructors are as great as Iwona!

I had tried other forms of meditation but they never really worked for me. After coming here, I felt immediately that something was different and hopeful about this place. I was right! There is a really easy to follow and well structured method. I love that you can work with a guide 1 on 1 to address your individual needs, but also that there's a community of wonderful people meditating together in group classes. I was actually amazed at how logical and powerful the method is, and noticed improvement in my mental health right away after starting. It has now been 4 years and I can really say I'm night and day a different person than I was before. I feel so much lighter and freer. My mind is so much clearer than before. I'm much healthier than before. I am free from anxiety and depression. I have a newfound appreciation and love for life, and it really just gets better and better every day. I'm so grateful for this place! I always recommend meditation to my family and friends because I know it will help them with their struggles. My mom and cousin both started meditating recently and they love it! It feels really good to see them happy, and I feel this meditation has brought us closer together. Even if you aren't in a bad place mentally, I still totally recommend this meditation because it helped me in so many aspects of life, for example my work ethic and focus is so much better now since my mind is so much clearer. 100% recommend!

Tues night consisted of a guided mediation for noobs (like me), a general quiet space mediation for pros and it ended with a moving lecture by an invited guest speaker. Tonight's lecturer was wonderful and her stories and topic were universal and relatable. My visit to the Shambhala Medication Center was powerful and moving. I want to cultivate and hone this new practice; perhaps make it a weekly thing. I'm also interested in their workshops and possibly even a weekend retreat. If you are new to meditation and looking for a warm, friendly environment to start, Shambhala is definitely it. It's a relaxing mental escape from the buzzing city below and a good starting point for self-exploration. I highly recommend it.

She hasn't been and wanted to attend with a friend. I read about it on their website. It sounded great! I personally am looking for a community of young adults who are friendly, open to newcomers, and share a dedication to meditation. So, I arrived a little bit after 7. There were a few people in the lounge area, drinking tea and chatting with others. Everyone seemed warm, friendly, happy. I took this time to walk around. I found the kitchen and bathroom, both of which were clean. The meditation was in their expansive meditation room. The event had a traditional meditation session. The facilitator was great during this part of the event. His voice was at a smooth low tone that encouraged him to meditate deeper. Unfortunately, not everyone was on the same meditative pace. Someone's phone rang twice during meditation. SMH. That was when things went down hill. After this session, the instructor led us to sit in a circle for a social meditation session. I've never done a social meditation session, and I was looking forward to it. But instantly the instructor's low self esteem surfaced as he stumbled on his words and hesitated with the activities. He asked questions and some individuals voiced their concerns, trials, and tribulations with their daily lives. It honestly seemed like a group therapy session and people only focused on the problems with urban life. SMH. So I zoned out and I tried to meditate. Then next thing I know I hear my name called. The instructor called me to say something. I had no idea what to say. I said something so I could leave the spotlight ASAP. Overall, the attendees seemed nice. But I would not return. I do not like being called on the spot like I was a third grader. I do not like the whole group therapy session going on.

Both teachers are kind, thoughtful, and radiate peace - all the things you want in Gentle/Restorative classes. In the gentle flow class, the asana sequence was both slow and mindful while also giving the opportunity to address one's typical areas of tension - hips, hamstrings, shoulders. The classes were a refuge of quiet peace during a long stressful work week and allowed me to shift into my parasympathetic nervous system. I'm also grateful that the studio only charges $22 for a drop in class (which includes a mat rental if needed) - this is considerably less than other studios in town. I can't recommend this studio more emphatically.
