We were on a day tour to the Highlands, and Loch Ness was our third -- and main -- stop. We had…read morearound 2-2.5 hours there and were free to explore and grab lunch wherever we liked. After roaming around the town and a tiring day out, being South Asian, we were craving some rice. We spotted this place and decided to give it a try. We walked in and were greeted with warm, smiley faces. The restaurant was almost empty, which made us a little unsure at first -- but we decided to settle down and order: * Chicken Szechuan * House Special Fried Rice And wow... what a meal it turned out to be! The Chicken Szechuan was absolute gold -- perfectly cooked, loaded with veggies, and coated in flavorful sauces. The House Special Fried Rice was good too -- though I personally would have loved it a bit spicier or with more veggies. The pricing was reasonable (thankfully not £17 for a single basic meal ). Service was very good -- simple, polite, and efficient. The décor was typical Chinese style, nothing fancy, just a couple of servers managing the place Overall: simple place, tasty food, good service. 4/5

Considering their reputation is on the music, it was perhaps better than I expected. Several good local beer choices on draft, though I wish they had something on cask. And of course many whisky choices, with good navigation. Service was friendly and not rushed, perfectly timed with the 1.5-hour table max.

We spent one of our 4 nights in town at Hootananny...It's a lively spot with a full restaurant and bar and good whiskey recommendations from the bartender. On this night, it was a jam, as opposed to a frontal performance...these jams you'll find throughout Scotland are really not performances, but musicians who gather together in the front of the venue, sitting in a circle, typically with a group of them with their backs to the audience, who play for each other, for the sheer and obvious love of the collaborative music. They ran through all kinds of traditional Scottish tunes, occasionally with instruments put aside to let a couple of them sing a cappella. It was a beautiful experience to watch "performers" immersing themselves in each other's music, with us, the audience, grateful, if not incidental, receivers of it. They've got a decent whisky selection too, and, as I found throughout Scotland, every bartender seemed knowledgeable in what was offered and willing to have a conversation to help guide you to what you might want to drink that night. (I had a Bunnahabain dram.) If you've got a few nights in town, this is one of the main 3 venues you should check out...the other two we experienced were more direct performances, also good, but to experience a musician's jam circle like this, is truly a wonderful and unique experience to have when in town.

Well, in my mind, we had to stop for such a thing. It took a minute to get back to the spot, and another to wander around the lock on the river there to figure out where it was. It turns out it's a large boat anchored above the lock, tied off to the moorings. We walked on board, and ducked our heads and went below. Here there was a surprisingly small but well stocked bar. All around the bar were about a dozen fellas jawing it up and laughing, in what I would guess to be a Gaelic speak(I understood none of the banter). We used the facilities(yes they had a good bathroom), and saw down on some large leather couches like we were in a den in someones house. We ended up with a couple glasses of wine and relaxed. There was a dog wandering around by us, relaxed to the odd juxtaposition of a bar under water. To the side of the couches was actually a lizard fish tank, just to add some quirky ambiance I suppose. we only stayed for a couple drinks, we had to be on our way. But not before thanking the gal working that day,for a great spot to stop and relax for a moment on the road.

Re: Delicious Sticky Toffee Pudding…read more To the Greek couple we met in Inverness, with great apologies, we suffered confusion of which delicious desserts we had at various restaurants around the city, inadvertently directing you towards a place that did not serve sticky toffee pudding. We should have pointed you towards MacGregor's as having the most delicious sticky toffee pudding, now verified after having several others that did not perfectly balance sweet with salt as that of the sticky toffee pudding at MacGregor's. If the pub is full, please find your way to the end of the bar and the small door to the left that takes you to the cosy table service room where Jess and other wait staff, including little Nala, will take the best care of you. We also highly recommend the steak & ale pie and fish & chips, should you require something a bit more than the sticky toffee pudding. Again, apologies, and we are certain you will have a fantastic experience at MacGregor's!
