BUYER BEWARE My husband and I wanted to move to the area to be closer to work. We set up a tour of a 1 bedroom apartment and were showed a different unit than the one we would be living in. When we asked if we could see the apartment we applied for there was always some excuse given such as we're cleaning it or were adding new carpets. I find it disturbing that over the course of 2 weeks they're comfortable taking my money but not showing me where I'm going to live. What are you trying to hide? Yesterday we decided to cancel our application but they refuse to reimburse us even though they were never willing to show us our apartment. After paying the deposit, we were told we'd be called back the next day. We proceeded to have to call them back after a few days because nobody ever got back to us about our application. When we decided to pull out of the application process they told us they would not be refunding our deposit because it had been conveniently over 72 hours. Not only was there no progress, the background check wasn't finished in the time they quoted, and they refused to let us see the apartment. Later that day we went to tour a separate apartment where they were actively working on the kitchen and they were more than happy to show off their apartment for us. Very unprofessional would not recommend. Don't rent from them unless you're 100% certain you want to live somewhere you don't get to see before signing a lease. read more

This used to be the premier rental community in the area, and there really was a great sense of community. I've been a resident for several years and have seen ownership and then management change hands. There used to be a dynamic, professional and energetic management team in our leasing office. I knew every person there by name, because they made a point of introducing themselves and engaging with residents at every opportunity. There used to be financial rewards for renewing leases early to the small select group who decided and acted quickly and it was a fun challenge. This past summer when it came time for me to have to renew, it took ME to place several calls to request the documents necessary, and even then I received them well beyond my anniversary date. Currently, I don't know a single person's name working in our leasing office and I visit that office every bit as often as I have since the day I moved in because they act as the concierge for the property by accepting and holding package deliveries and the like. Okay, I admit this is far less important to many, but it all adds to my growing disappointment. And I was unable to make the necessary arrangements to find alternate housing, so my only recourse was to renew my lease. As for the more important stuff. The property has fallen into considerable disarray and is not well kept. During the summer there is an outside landscaping company, so that much is fine, as it is with the snow removal contractors. The entire building is carpeted and the carpeting in the corridors are always dirty with debris, spills (including pet waste) as they are rarely vacuumed anymore. I can't even remember the last time they were shampooed and they used to get shampooed twice a year at a minimum. The corridor walls aren't maintained either and there are small holes and scuffs everywhere, not to mention a long wooden handrail was ripped from the wall of the east C Wing stairwell last spring and that handrail has now been propped against the wall un-repaired ever since (so, like 8+ months and that's ridiculous). There are a much greater number of residents in my building now who have visiting home healthcare aids and these healthcare aids routinely place twigs and rocks in exterior doors so they can smoke cigars and cigarettes and not get locked out. This allows smoke inside the building, it has caused the doors to be knocked out of alignments by tweaking the hinges so they don't open or close property and thereby adversely affecting security, and the cigar and cigarette filter waste just accumulates because nobody cleans or removes it. Not to mention a number of these aids are incredibly rude when me or any other resident kicks the rock or twig away so the building can be secured. Then there's the change in pet policy, which now allows dogs. I'm a pet lover, but because of my schedule, I'm simply not around enough to have one. That said, there are A LOT of dogs now, including a number of Pitbulls, which are supposedly not allowed by policy (but it obviously isn't enforced). I have no problem with any breed and don't even care that there are Pitbulls (except for one in particular is is always muzzled because of its aggressiveness). My point is management doesn't care except for the occasional notice posted up or text message reminding pet owners to pick up dog waste. And waste bags are provided. Yet still you can't walk anywhere that isn't paved or cement because the amount of dog feces and waste is absolutely disgusting. This is made all the worse because outdoor staircases are built of pressure treated wood, which a number of dogs routinely urinate on. So now all of that urine is absorbed into the wood and the stench is unbearable. And Since I didn't move here with the existing policy that allows dogs in place, I believe I have a right to voice my displeasure without being labeled a whiner simply because if I wanted to live in that type of environment, I would have moved into one. Instead I was was made to simply deal with all of this it or leave. There is a pool in the summer that is well maintained, there is package concierge services, there is a microbrewery literally right across the street and this property is very conveniently located to the highway and other local restaurants and shopping, so I won't give just 1 star as a rating because it isn't all bad. Regardless, until these people get their act together, I would recommend you look for another property... I know I will be. read more

I have lived at the Lofts for about three years now. Originally when I moved in, I took a HUGE (really amazing) unit which was just too big for two people. We downsized last week and are very happy in our new place. The office and maintenance people are extremely helpful and do their best to make tenants feel at home. It is a little noisy depending on where your apt. is located, but in the end the pros definitely outweigh any cons. read more

Worst place I've ever rented from ever. We got charged 2000 bucks for s rug that was "damaged" by our pet. On top of the deposit for the pet and monthly charge on top of it . We are in the process of sueing them back and the chances look great . Fuck lofts at the mills the worst place and I don't recommend to anyone. The apartment was nice, but the neighbors were intolerable. I had to walk on eggshells in my own space that I was paying way too much for. Children consistently running through hallways, while neighbor pins the blame on my children. Protip: If you can't handle noise above you, live on the top floor. Management was helpful in the noise complaint situation, especially when they're aware of how "that neighbor can be". The kitchens could really use a remodel. read more

I have been living here for a little over a year and I have had a great experience. Jen from the leasing office is super helpful and would do her best to help you out. I moved here in a hurry and they worked quickly to make the apt move in ready. Snow removal is very timely and they always come around early to put down salt when its icy. Maintenance is great(not your creepy plumber) they are super friendly and reply to problems very quickly and actually tell you what they are doing. The building is always clean, the laundry room is never crowded and I usually don't have to wait for a machine. I have used the gym and the pool and they are also pretty clean. The walls are a little thin so you will get some of the neighbors noise but its not that bad (typical for an apt) I am glad that I chose to live here, its a great community! read more

They lured us in with a unit on sale. $ per sq ft was phenomenal! But first night should have been a sign: I was cooking and the CO/smoke detector continued to go off. 10PM and we couldn't figure it out. Lo and behold, later on we had to call the fire department because it refused to shut off. They told us it was a faulty detector. that was the least of our worries. The 2nd week we lived there, our roof started leaking. Management's answer? An apology and a garbage can. One year later that garbage can is in the same spot collecting water every time it rains or snows. Leaks are everywhere! Both floors, leaks spring in different places each time, some fading then coming back later on. Leaks that dripped on electrical outlets! So the roof needed fixing. For the past month there is a huge tractor taking up parking spaces and disgusting and messy caution tape all over the parking lot. During this roof repair, we came home to wood shavings all over our office. When I reported to the management staff the woman condescendingly asked if I wanted someone sent over to vacuum it up. No thank you, I'll take care of it myself, since the management for this building is extremely incompetent, disrespectful, and condescending, it makes me cringe whenever I have to talk to them. Which is often. Also, custodians have walked into our apartment without knocking multiple times and once left the door open... We came home to our 12 week old kitten missing and luckily found it roaming the hallway. There's more. The window drafts are ridiculous. Good luck using heat and a/c cause it all goes out the window and out of your pocket. Also, walls are paper thin. We can hear our neighbors talking, having sex, you name it and can smell cigarette smoke THROUGH THE WALLS. there has been a door in the building that has not worked correctly FOR HALF A YEAR and it hasn't been fixed yet. We had a person walking on the third floor and THE LIGHT FIXTURE IN OUR KITCHEN BROKE AND FELL. I honestly cannot make this stuff up. I can keep going but it'll take a novel before I'm finished. The only time I received help was when my fiancé one month forgot to click submit when paying rent, and instead of noticing we always paid on time and instead of giving us a courtesy call, we instead get a notice to vacate in the middle of the month. They urgently helped me contact their law office so they could receive their extra $250. While panicking and making sure it goes through, the staff made sure to let me know "their policy is really strict" and joked around by saying "I bet you won't be making that mistake again!" If you just scrolled to the end of this review, here's a summary: Don't live here. Save yourself a headache. I wouldn't spend a half hour writing this at 1 AM if I wasn't speaking the truth. I've been a tenant since 11/1/2013. I was thrilled with my apt; it's unique look, the area, the staff. I had read reviews about noise but know that's part of apt living. My first 4 months, the noise issues were awful. I was ultimately allowed to move to a new unit (the $500 trnsfr fee was waived by mgmnt). New unit is great; quieter and with a unique floor plan. I did some research and without major renovations, it is what it is on the noise. The area isn't a bad one. If you take a right out of the lot of the main bldg, the area declines, but if you take a left, you are just feet from stately and well maintained homes. Snow removal the first two winters was awesome! Winter '15 was not even close. There were times when the lot was an ice rink. People weren't moving their cars for snow removal and weren't towed as they had been previous yrs. There is ample parking but there's been a lot of issues with theft/vandals. The lights in the lot are dim. Potholes left after winter months aren't fixed timely. People park in spots that are not parking spots, before; you would be towed. Initially, there was a fairly regular police presence driving through the lot, the Office should be working with the police to maintain that presence. The exterior locks stink and there have been several times where door locks have remained broken for up to 3 weeks. In June 2015, 7-8 unruly teens entered the bldg and ran around vandalizing the common areas. Keys can be copied and who knows how many are floating about. I wonder when the last time the common doors were rekeyed. The access code for the one door with key fob access has been the same since 2013. Smoking is permitted in apts but not in interior common areas, people do anyway. Hard to police but it shows you the quality of the people in the bldg. I live in the front of the bldg and can't leave my windows open because of the smokers in the front of the bldg. The smoke wafts up into open windows, you can hear conversations at all hours of the night and there's the butts all over the front of the bldg. They accept Section 8 despite telling perspective tenants they don't and at the risk of being stereotypical, they are not always the nicest type of people. I wonder if the % of Section 8 tenants has risen at the same rate that tenant satisfaction has declined. People leave trash in the common areas/outside the dumpsters. The dumpster issue has been partially resolved with a second weekly pick up. Supervising move-ins/outs and/or having move-in/out windows could curb some of the trash left inside the bldg. Improvements have been made. All units received new efficient toilets that need multiple flushes to finish your business. They are also a different size than the originals and the bathrooms should have been repainted but were not. The exterior windows were washed and a poor job was done. Meanwhile the interior needs painting. The laundry rooms received new energy efficient washers. The pool area received new pool furniture. The Office staff has high turnover. When I first moved in, the staff was awesome. Today I have no faith in the Property Mgr/Asst. Property Mgr; that they care about the issues & that issues will be resolved timely. There is a lack of communication from the office. Sporadic newsletters at best. There's an online work order system which is great and apparently the only way to ensure accountability with the office staff. The Office also offers a pkg delivery service for an annual fee. Several tenants have mentioned that they paid the fee but pkgs weren't delivered timely, yet pkgs can be returned to sender by the office if not picked up within 3 business days. The office is only open later than 5:30 two nights/week and for those who work till 5 or later, outside of the city, that can make it difficult to pick up pkgs on time. There have also been multiple times where arriving at 6:45, I've found the office dark and closed with no note on the door saying they've closed early. The Maintenance Manager is super nice but I wonder if he's not overwhelmed/understaffed as there are often times where issues go 3,4, 5 weeks before being resolved. The actual Maintenance staff is incredible; polite and efficient. I get that for the sq. footage, the units are well priced for the area. Most units haven't been updated in 15+ yrs with the exception of as needed updates. They do have a select upgrade program through the office if you pay a monthly fee but I pay rent and don't feel I should have to pay more to ensure that the units are maintained/updated as necessary. I would be willing to pay an extra $100-150/month if the bldg was in fact secure and updated for the times. As is, it is not luxury living. If you're going to bill as luxury living and as a secure building, it needs to be both of those things. read more

Do yourself a favor and do not live here! I moved in about 4 months ago and have regretted it ever since. True the units are super cute and on paper they seem really nice but they really are not. You can hear everything that is going on in the apartments next to you, no raised voices necessary. If you are excited about the fact that it is "smoke-free" forget it. The hallway smells like stale cigarette smoke, like the home of a long-term pack-a-day smoker. One of my neighbors smokes weed, often enough and strong enough that the smell has permeated my apartment, when I complained to the office about it they told me that I needed to pinpoint which apartment it was coming from before they would do anything. Aside from being the weirdo sniff at people's doorways, how do they expect me to pinpoint the smell? They had everyone sign a specific document about marijuana, if they aren't going to investigate or do anything about it, what the hell was the point? Moving on to the maintenance issues. In the four months I have lived here, I have had a blown fuse, stuck window, and a broken dishwasher. The floor transition piece between the kitchen tiles and the living room carpet has continuously popped up causing a serious tripping hazard and exposing nails. They advertise valet dry clean service but no they canceled that and didn't bother to update their website. Their so-called "interactive" laundry center is full of small machines that cost $1.75 each load and the text message alert system doesn't work. The "state of the art" fitness center only has like 5 machines. They also advertise package acceptance, what they don't tell you is that they only accept small packages. I had a bed comforter set delivered while I was at work and they rejected it and sent it back to UPS so now I have to go pick it up some day I have off work. Ultimately I cannot wait until my lease is up so I can move out. Honestly, I am so upset and disappointed that I am tempted to try and break my lease early and buy a house just so I don't have to deal with landlords anymore. read more

the good: the maintenance is top-notch, responsive, and generally expert. the cleaning staff are really nice and pleasant. i like my apartment. the bad: outrageously expensive, bad service from the office staff. the place doesn't recycle next to bottles and cans, and cardboard boxes. let me explain. lofts at the mills is owned and managed by a monster-like corporation. after a series of not-so-great experiences with mom-and-pop owned properties, i opted for a managed apartment situation while i finish my doctoral degree in the area. a huge mistake. the staff members in the leasing office sit pretty and wait for their shifts to end. they look like they count the minutes until they get to leave every time i go in there with an inquiry. then why are there five of them at a time in the office with nothing to do? it gets better the higher up you go. realizing that my rent goes to the salaries of the complex's manager (sarah) and regional office manager (tracy) sickens me. and then there are the fees. EVERYTHING has a fee. next to your typical managed housing late fees, pet fees, key deposit, etc., the only job that the staff members do sometimes is calculating interest on your late fees, and at the end of the month you get a piece of paper tagged to your door with a balance on your account. welcome home. no wonder they need an office full of staffing at the complex--they need that many people to get every illegitimate cent they can take from the tenants. when you visit, they make sure you see a nice-looking place. then you sit down to sign the lease, which is a book, and because you've already decided to move there, you sign it. then you move in, and you realize that they've got you with every misuse of housing law there is. and there's no winning given one of you and a whole corporation whose full-time job is to show apartments, sign leases, then garner as much money from you while you're bound by lease as they can. they've got it down to an ugly science. read more

It's good bang for your buck. That's the best I can say. It's close to major highways, ten minutes from the mall, fifteen from Hartford, twenty from the airport, twenty-five to UConn. You get more square footage for the price than you could get anywhere else. Our electric and gas bill are beautifully reasonable. But. All that being said, everything's just a little bit...not great. They seem incredibly understaffed, so if someone leaves trash or spills something in the hallways, it will live there forever. If something breaks, it will take weeks and weeks for them to fix it. The appliances are so old, we've stopped using our dishwasher out of mistrust that it's actually washing anything. When we moved in, there was dirt caked into the cabinets. And oh lord, the other reviews aren't kidding about thin walls. It all comes down to luck of the draw. If you have decent neighbors and aren't too bothered by hearing murmurings through the wall, great, no problem. But if you get people who like to play the tv rather loudly and have loud voices (I'm not even talking insane levels here, just above-average loudness) then you will hear their every conversation at all hours of the day. Having been a renter here for the last 1.8 years, I warn anyone who rents here that contrary to what the office staff will lead you to think the area is not a good one. In the time we've been here it has resembled more and more every week a tenement, not the 'luxury apartments' they advertise. There have been times when we'd come home to blood spatters on walls in the main halls, graffiti on the elevators and hallway ceilings, people in the building that don't live or belong there roaming the halls, knocking on doors or sleeping in the hallways, and not all the vandals are from the neighborhood either, a good number reside in the complex. Walls are paper thin, so don't expect privacy. At all. When it comes to noise, you can expect teens running up and down the halls, at least in the A section, all the time. Police also are a fairly common fixture responding there several times a week for 'issues'. If you have damage done to your belongings due to an act or act of commission or omission of the leasing staff, don't expect them to step up and rectify or pay for those damages they were a cause of, they have no sense of responsibility or how to accept it for their own actions. The units are old, most in need of actual updating instead of just adding a 15th layer of paint on the issue. You also are led to believe the building is a locked secure building, and non-smoking, neither of which are true as many times you will find said locked doors propped or left wide open, and there are many times in multiple hallways the halls are thick with the smell of cigarette smoke which does filter into the apartments which is completely gross. They did finally pave parts of the parking lot last year so we weren't driving into ditches and ruining our tires and front ends anymore. Staff is nice, but actively pursues deniability when caught on an issue or a complaint is raised. Note on staff: VERY high turnover rate for a small office, says something. Overall, building is OLD and worn and shows it badly, new carpets are now needed throughout as I don't think they ever actually cleaned them and they are just disgusting now, and stairs are 'squishy' in main exits inside. It is not a quiet complex, with cars in the parking lot all hours of the night with loud music or car alarms going off and loud people in the halls. Sometimes its more like a spring break hotel atmosphere than someplace working people live. Note on this: There also appears to be an increasing amount of section 8 and subsidy rentals moving in over the last year and the quality of people moving in has gone down. They tell you there is an application process and checks to pass but honestly I don't think they've been doing them just in order to get apartments filled, if they were then there would be better oversight on who they were renting to. Like I said, it's not a good area in the first place, and the triple homicide in the complex one building over did nothing but prove that. End result is I will be very glad to be moving out of here soon. read more
