Come for the views and stay for the food! This is a hidden gem (really, it is hard to find!!) in Coimbra close to the university. I had to walk around the building a couple times before I found it. I actually thought it was closed at first since I didn't see anyone inside, but I am glad I went in anyway. The indoor space was indeed empty but the patio with the view was bustling and it's easy to see why! I tried the 5 tapas. Some were really good and others not so much. I also tried their "world's best sponge cake", which was definitely good but very sweet! I honestly don't know how many sponge cakes I have tried before so I can't compare. It had a very interesting texture and part of it was more liquidy than I expected, almost like it had been frozen and thawed. Regardless, it was a good experience. The servers were friendly. You order at your table and then pay at the front. Overall it was a relaxing break from a long day of walking around the city. read more

Sandwich - ham & cheese, on really good bread. What's with the sliced boiled egg? Surprise, no mention of bonus egg in the sandwich on the menu. I thought it was cheese. At least call it the ham, egg and cheese sandwich. Chips were okay. read more

A nice setting to view the city after viewing the University and Museum. We stopped in for lunch and ordered sandwiches. The salmon sandwich was good, served on grilled toasted bread with lettuce, tomato and sliced hard boiled egg. I found myself dreaming of lox and bagels with cream cheese, as this was the same type of lox that I get at home. The buffet lunch looked OK, but for 15 € each, decided on just a sandwich. Not many choices at the top of the hill, so it was a good place to stop. read more

While we were walking through Coimbra we stumbled upon this restaurant. From the distant we saw people eating on the balcony. So we went inside to check it out. Apparently there's a special menu from 12:00 - 15:00. A soup, main dish, dessert, glass of wine, water and a espresso all together for €9,50. I call that a great deal! On top of that you will have a great view over the city. Also friendly staff and clean restaurant. Worth a visit. read more

This seemed like a really good idea and decent spread, but got food poisoning here. Either the octopus salad or seafood in their version of paella. The view was lovely, and the price was stellar, but after the food poisoning... I suppose you'd fair alright if you just stick to the veggies. They had nice salad fixings and a bunch of desserts and the staff was nice. But after the harrowing experience that followed, I'd suggest just getting a coffee. read more

Lunch buffet here was the perfect rest stop while walking around the university, as recommended by Rick Steves' book. Lunch buffet ends at 2:30; we showed up right at 2:30 but they were kind enough to let us sit and enjoy a very long, leisurely lunch. It's a fixed price lunch menu - €9.50 for soup, bread, salad, entree, drink, dessert and coffee/tea. Great value!! Gorgeous views over the city, great service, and very relaxing atmosphere. Cheap lunchtime buffet with an amazing view! They offer the buffet (unlimited salad,soup and main dishes plus 1 dessert) plus a glass of house wine or beer for $9.90! Definitely come during normal lunch hours 12-2pm to guarantee they'll be serving. The buffet is on the small side but had a variety of fresh salads and several options for main dishes (fish, meat, rice, veggies, fried potatoes). Sufficient service and I can't emphasize enough how gorgeous the view is. We came even on a rainy day and were thoroughly impressed. read more
