Great staff with excellent wine recommendations and fast service. Very nice environment inside with areas for private dining or large groups. The sauce on the steak was very unique and delicious. I asked for medium rare (typically at least a little pink inside) and it came out closer to well-done. Maybe it was a translation issue, so i didn't send it back - the sauce luckily was good enough to make it still delicious. Stopped in for lunch while visiting the village. Service was fantastic and the food was great! We started with the cheese and meat board that came with pumpkin jam. This paired wonderful with red wine (they have lots of options)! I ordered the grilled sirloin with vegetables which was cooked slightly more medium than medium rare but that's ok because the flavor was good. read more

We went for the namesake, getting three different types of Bacalhau: one with shrimp and clams, one with a cream sauce and caramelized onions, and one with tomatoes onions and cheese. The portions were generous, and the bacalhau was flaky and lightly fishy. Not dry at all! It was great to see all the varieties of bacalhau. There were a ton of bones in our dishes, but I guess that's expected. Our server was really welcoming and helped us figure out which dishes to order. read more

Must try if you are visiting Coimbra. The portion is really good, and it's not expensive. If you are traveling alone or a group of two just go with the 2nd recommendation (cod with some side dishes). We ordered a bunch of other appetizers and pork and enjoyed them all. Service was excellent. It's near the Fado show. read more

A short stroll from the downtown train station, at the base of the walk up the big hill, in the center of town. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated. We were offered a menu in English to facilitate our ordering preferences. Our waiter was cheerful and eagerly described the differences in the dishes so we had a wonderful experience. Our salad was super fresh, the cod was phenomenal, and the mustard sauce over the veal was just outstanding. You're welcome to roam the restaurant and observe where they rehydrate the cod. There's specialty items for sale, and the restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy your preferred surroundings. read more

It's a pretty restaurant and there are no reservations required. I would've thought with a Michelin nod their food and service would be top notch, however, they were both lacking. Despite disclosing that I don't eat meat before I ordered I still got sausage on my fish skewers (recommended by server). We tried the traditional highly recommended dishes and sadly both seafood dishes lacked flavor and didn't deliver. The appetizer was decent but I'd skip this place and try somewhere else. read more

The restaurant itself is lovely and large, with many different seat options and areas. They also have a nice outdoor seating area as well. The wait staff was what I'd call more American and attentive, which I know some people prefer (I'm not one of those Americans). So we shared the meat and cheese plate, which was very good, with a nice bottle of wine. My husband and I then shared one of their sharing plates. We loved the steak, but everything else was just okay. The presentation was beautiful, and the plates for two could feed more, especially with the pasta. Our friends share a cod dish that they are known for and thought it was just okay. So nothing will knock your socks off unless maybe you genuinely are a cod lover. So they have a whole section of their menu dedicated to the beloved Cod! So nothing remarkable but an all-around pleasant experience, I would not go back if ever here as there were too many other off-the-beaten-path places to try! read more

Nice restaurant off the main path in a busy area in Coimbra. Waitstaff is friendly and attentive. Cod fish is its speciality and they prepare it at least a dozen different ways. They do have other fish as well as meat and kids options. Most of the seating is indoors but there is a lot of room, which includes a second floor. The food was good and well prepared. My only issue with the place was the pressure to tip when we went to pay the bill. It's not a typical thing in Portugal, or Europe for that matter, but some of the major city restaurants are now taking advantage of tourists and asking for a tip when it's time to pay the bill. This restaurant seems to going that route so just a heads up if you plan to try it out. read more

Set in the center of town at the base of the hill, we very much enjoyed Solar do Bacalhau. The service was excellent, but not overwhelming and the English menu was appreciated. My wife had a pork and shrimp dish. I enjoyed the pork as much as any I've tasted. My grilled octopus on rice was absolutely superb. We also enjoyed a tasty salad and a cod fish cake. As with many eateries in Portugal, the value was excellent, and I would not hesitate to recommend this establishment! read more

Chosen because of a Michelin recommendation for 'good value' and we were staying just down the street - enjoyed the evening and experience of 'traditional' Coimbra food but it felt jaded and touristy, as in made to be a mimicry of, from recipes old, by cooks disconnected, servers unconcerned with menu fashioned by rote for checkbox presentation and monetary exchange rather than any real concern for the sensory experience of eating. Tastes and textures were uniform and mealy; service was very slow and a tad oppositional. We ordered one cod dish which had generous portions, though disappointingly inconsistent. Some parts soft and fresh tasting, some parts dry and a little spoilt, which we left. The pink sausage mash atop provided some salted balance to the blandness of the fish but was both not enough and undercooked; meant to have a crispy crunch, the mealiness made some bites feel like week old recycled cafeteria food. The salad and veal were unsurprising and solid, the taste uniform. The chocolate cake was decent with good texture if less chocolate taste than desired, and the tiramisu creamy without the taste of coffee and liquor I tend to associate with 'tiramisu.' The vanilla and strawberry ice creams had resiliency and taste, if over colored. Prices were definitely reasonable compared to the equivalent in the US, definitely go for an echo of a taste of what Coimbra / Portugal might have been (like a gigantic cheesecake in NYC that NYers don't eat but tourists do) - not unpleasant if you don't mind feeling and smelling a bit like fish on the way out. read more

For an American in Portugal, this restaurant was an amazing find. We started with a Porto Tonic followed by a mixed salad and a beef carpaccio with razor thin beef topped with Parmesan cheese and mushrooms. The waiter suggested an excellent red wine for under 15 euros that complemented our Don Giovanni pizza topped with a think mozzarella cheese, ham, and mushrooms. Stopped in Coimbra on the way down to Fatima from Aveiro. Excellent spot for traditional Portuguese cod fish (Bacalhau). I had the oven roasted cod, my wife the cod fish cakes (similar in construction to a crab cake). One daughter had grilled whole fish which she though was excellent as well. One daughter had plain pizza that was well done given it's not a specialty of the house. Prices are on the high end for Portugal but very reasonable for the value. read more

This is a bit of a tourist trap. The Maitre D. Was charming when we entered and turned to stone when it was clear that we thought the food was awful. Where to start? The house wine was poor. The Bacalhau was very poor. Tasteless and delivery within minutes (microwave?) Possibly the worst meal we have had in Portugal - which is a shame, because there is so much good food here. read more

Great choice when in Coimbra. We ordered the cod (of course, it makes up a big portion of the menu). It was grilled, with potatoes and olive oil. It was a tad salty but delicious (my husband may have added salt actually). My daughter and I got the margarita pizza and they were huge portions and delicious. My other daughter got the chicken salad (wasn't expecting the mayo as a part of the dressing so u may want to tell them to leave that off). We got cod cookies and veggie soup as appetizers, very delicious. We also got fruit "salad".. not really a salad but sliced fruit.. still delicious. The service was friendly and they were very speedy without rushing us. I highly recommend if u go to this sleepy (aka boring) town. read more

We were actually looking for another restaurant, but that one turned out to be closed on Mondays. So we accidentally ended up here. But what a pleasant coincidence! Great food, very friendly, professional and helpful staff and a nice atmosphere. We had a traditional Portuguese dish (Bacalhau stew), a bottle of green wine and baked apples for desert.
