Must try if you are visiting Coimbra. The portion is really good, and it's not expensive. If you are traveling alone or a group of two just go with the 2nd recommendation (cod with some side dishes). We ordered a bunch of other appetizers and pork and enjoyed them all. Service was excellent. It's near the Fado show.

It's a pretty restaurant and there are no reservations required. I would've thought with a Michelin nod their food and service would be top notch, however, they were both lacking. Despite disclosing that I don't eat meat before I ordered I still got sausage on my fish skewers (recommended by server). We tried the traditional highly recommended dishes and sadly both seafood dishes lacked flavor and didn't deliver. The appetizer was decent but I'd skip this place and try somewhere else.

A short stroll from the downtown train station, at the base of the walk up the big hill, in the center of town. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated. We were offered a menu in English to facilitate our ordering preferences. Our waiter was cheerful and eagerly described the differences in the dishes so we had a wonderful experience. Our salad was super fresh, the cod was phenomenal, and the mustard sauce over the veal was just outstanding. You're welcome to roam the restaurant and observe where they rehydrate the cod. There's specialty items for sale, and the restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy your preferred surroundings.

The restaurant itself is lovely and large, with many different seat options and areas. They also have a nice outdoor seating area as well. The wait staff was what I'd call more American and attentive, which I know some people prefer (I'm not one of those Americans). So we shared the meat and cheese plate, which was very good, with a nice bottle of wine. My husband and I then shared one of their sharing plates. We loved the steak, but everything else was just okay. The presentation was beautiful, and the plates for two could feed more, especially with the pasta. Our friends share a cod dish that they are known for and thought it was just okay. So nothing will knock your socks off unless maybe you genuinely are a cod lover. So they have a whole section of their menu dedicated to the beloved Cod! So nothing remarkable but an all-around pleasant experience, I would not go back if ever here as there were too many other off-the-beaten-path places to try!

The pork with mushrooms was good...

So... this isn't a terrible place, but for our US viewers - it's a lot like the Cheese Cake Factory! Not a lot of ambiance... the menu was decent, but not spectacular... I'd call it a safe play... I ordered the pork with mushrooms and it was solid. The wine selection was also decent...

Outstanding service and well prepared and presented dishes. Almond pie was a special treat. Great selection of wines and beers. Recommended.

Hearty red wine at a reasonable price

For an American in Portugal, this restaurant was an amazing find. We started with a Porto Tonic followed by a mixed salad and a beef carpaccio with razor thin beef topped with Parmesan cheese and mushrooms. The waiter suggested an excellent red wine for under 15 euros that complemented our Don Giovanni pizza topped with a think mozzarella cheese, ham, and mushrooms. We had excellent service in a cozy bricked room for a very reasonable price.

Stopped in Coimbra on the way down to Fatima from Aveiro. Excellent spot for traditional Portuguese cod fish (Bacalhau). I had the oven roasted cod, my wife the cod fish cakes (similar in construction to a crab cake). One daughter had grilled whole fish which she though was excellent as well. One daughter had plain pizza that was well done given it's not a specialty of the house. Prices are on the high end for Portugal but very reasonable for the value.

Had a nice, if unremarkable meal here with the family. Very comfortable setting. I enjoyed the black pork.

Excited to try this local 7 table gem while in Coimbra. Lisa E. (always right) suggested lunch…read moresince dinner cues start an hour before opening and waits can be another hour or more. We arrived at 12:05 pm, second in line behind a group of 8. Seated 20 minutes later in cozy quarters. Fresh rustic bread on the table. Menu difficult to decipher but we had a translated copy on our phones. We ordered a jug of house tinto, and half orders of aporcolhados mushrooms, roasted wild boar and grilled ribs with special sauce. The kind waiter said we ordered too much, we didn't agree until a huge crock of rice and beans hit the table with the 2 meat dishes. The mushrooms were cooked with bits of meat and bone as well as slices of traditional and blood sausage. Fabulous! I loved the tender boar slices accompanied by roasted cabbage and potatoes. Lisa favored the slightly charred ribs in a spicy vinegary sauce. Oh, and that rice, I promised her I wouldn't post the photo of her devouring the last bits from the serving ladle. So, too much food? Nothing a outdoor rooftop nap at our hotel wouldn't cure. Breakfast today was the leftover boar with the hotel's scrambled eggs.

This is a Top hole in the wall Gem in Coimbra and probably one of the best in Portugal overall…read more Quality- the pork ribs were my personal favorite. This is the type you spend a lot of time nibbling on and trying to get every last piece of meat out. It was incredibly flavorful with hints of bone broth, truffle oil, and various spices. I think I spent like 5 minutes on each piece trying to get every piece of meat out. It came out piping hot, the fresh aroma smelled like a mix of beans, thyme, garlic, and truffle and I smelled like it afterwards. The lamb stew was also delicious. I am allergic to lamb but had to try it this time and was not disappointed. This is the only time I've actually liked a lamb dish because the gamey flavor was not there. It was cooked very well. The vomit dessert was not too sweet and unique. It cut through the savory food I just had here. Quantity- all of this for 25 euros. Totally worth it. This would have easily gone for 70-80 dollars back in the states. We get a lot in each dish. Atmosphere- loved the college town vibe here. The place was cozy but had enough space so we weren't cramped. Service- awesome waiter. He was funny and gave great suggestions on what to get. Tipped him a lot for the fantastic service.
