The Prune Packers are part of the California Collegiate Baseball League, with teams all around the state. All players are enrolled in colleges and universities. The competition is at a very high level and the games are always competitive. The best example of the high quality of players is that a total of 9 Prune Packers that played in 2016 and 2017 have been drafted by major league teams!! Friday night was a typical game, had a Shoboyghan sausage from The Wurst who caters food for the games and watched the Prune Packers beat the Walnut Creek Crawdads 5-4. The nickname Prune Packers is from when the team was first organized in 1921, only groves of prunes existed. If you are looking for a fun night out with quality baseball, get to a game!

Mike is very friendly. Each day at pick up, he made it a point to catch me & tell me what a great job my son did. Mike & his staff of coaches very quickly pin pointed the one problem my son was having w/his swing which was causing him to either strike out or not hit well. They phrased in easy to understand terms for my son so that at bat, he'll be able to remember what to do. I liked that there was a small group of boys, maybe 40 at the most, making it possible for each player to get more personal time & attention w/the coaches. The kids start the day at Lefty Gomez Field & end it at the Triple crown facility for batting. Triple Crown is just a couple blocks walk away for the kids. The day was 9-1:30 which was the perfect amount of time. My son has done 9-4 baseball camps but that's just too long. The price was right, too: just $125 for the week! It was M-TH. I kind of wish it went thru Friday but my son felt 4 days was just right. His only complaint: he wishes they'd have more time on the field in live batting. If you're close to Rodeo, I highly recommend this camp!

The dugouts are sunk-in the ground like in the Major League Baseball parks and have a bull-pen and batting cage that can be used during a game without any interruption to the game in progress. They also have a concession stand facility with lots of treats for the kiddo's...especially the Big League Chew gum...lol The concession stand serves, hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos and even does Sno-Cones the best thing during warm weather baseball games. We recently used the Duarte field area for track and field practice with my daughter's school, and it ended up being exactly what we needed. The grass is fairly even, which makes a big difference when kids are running drills, and there's a nice amount of shade around the field. Parking was also easy, which is always a bonus when you're arriving with a group after school. We went on a Monday right after school, and it was pretty quiet when we first arrived. By the time we were leaving around 5:00 PM, the baseball fields around the park were definitely filling up with teams starting their practices, so it's clearly a popular spot for youth sports. One of the things I really like about this area of the park is that there's a running path that loops around the whole park, so it's a great place to run or walk while practices are going on. And because you're right next to the Sacramento Zoo, every once in a while you can actually hear the animals. It's a pretty fun and unexpected little background soundtrack while you're out there. Helpful tip: If you want a quieter experience, earlier in the afternoon is best. By late afternoon the baseball fields start filling up with team practices. Between the open field space, shade, easy parking, and the path around the park, it's a really great place for practices or just getting outside for a run. And the occasional zoo sounds definitely make it memorable.

Watching my son play on this well-maintained field in a massive, one-of-a-kind park is just one of the many reasons why I love Sacramento. There are a number of fields in this complex, so I suppose this review goes for most of them. They all have dugouts and backstops and clearly marked fields with a combination of dirt and grass. I won't say they are the best maintained, but they do the job when it comes to youth sports. Another plus is that most of the area is well-shaded by massive old trees during the summer months. So as a fan, you can enjoy your little person as they enjoy the game and do so from the comfort of bleachers in a nice shaded area.
