I was transferred to Callahan West and was quickly given an appointment for the next day at the University location. Very good customer service Callahan West. Upon arrival, I was able to drop my mother off in her wheelchair in the drop off lane while I parked. The check in experience was pleasant. The waiting room was comfortable on the 4th floor. There was a 45 minute wait time, probably because of last minute scheduling. The entire process was about 2.5 hours. Overall the service was good. I would go back.

Marie, the contact lens fitter, is a nice lady who is patient, willing to explain everything and often just starts explaining things without you asking, and is dedicated to putting you in the best possible lenses. She also doesn't push you to buy contacts from them which is something I always worry about. I think Marie is part of the optical shop side of AOA (Optiks), but I'll just include her here. Minus one star because of the unpredictable doctor wait times. I always get an early morning appointment, and I've waited anywhere from -5 minutes to 70 minutes past my appointment time to be shown back.

I did not see the signs, and yes, I understand that I probably shouldn't have pulled into the lot. I can admit that. But what happened afterward was completely unnecessary. When I realized the chain was up and I was stuck, I called the after-hours number. The first woman I spoke to was helpful and made sure I was able to get out, then transferred me to another woman. Instead of helping me, this woman immediately started accusing me of lying. She told me, "I'm not getting the story straight. Our maintenance closes the entrance at 6, so it sounds to me like you parked your car to go get a couple drinks down the street." Excuse me?? I am a 19-year-old girl, alone, in the dark, trying to find my way somewhere safely. I was NOT drinking, and I was NOT lying. I was so confused by the accusation that I told her to pull up the cameras because I could see them from where I was standing. I even told her I could see on my Life360 that I arrived at 7:38 PM and that she would clearly be able to see that. She continued telling me that her cameras didn't have access to where I was. So your cameras can't see who is pulling into or leaving your parking deck, but I'm standing right in front of them and can literally see them pointed toward the area I was parked in? That makes absolutely no sense. The first woman was able to help me, but the second woman made it very clear she was NOT coming down there, while continuing to interrogate me and accuse me of lying. She even told me, "I ain't coming back down there,, I got family in town." I understand I shouldn't have pulled into the lot. So here is the deal.... If you want a good eye exam but don't mind it taking longer than most…read moreplaces then UAB eye care is the place to go. You can see optometry students or residents or attending physicians. If you opt for a student be prepared for the exam to take about 2 hours. The students are very thorough but have to clear things with the resident or attending. If you opt for the resident be prepared for the exam to take 1-1 1/2 hours. The resident has more experience but depends on their speed and thoroughness as to how long it will take. The attending is most experienced so tends to take the shortest amount of time but that also depends on their schedule. This past week I saw this years resident and he was not the fastest. He was super laid back and didn't seem to be in a rush to get anything done. He also had 2 other patients he was working on so this visit was longer than usual. I like that they are thorough here as an optometry school so I tend to come yearly to see someone. This may not be for everyone - especially those in a hurry. But with all my eye issues, I will take the extra time.

He showed me very little consideration, compassion or benevolence. At one point, I tried to describe my symptoms to him and he literally interrupted me and said he would discuss my concerns at later point in the exam; at a time when he was ready and then he stood up and left me sitting in the chair. There is a big difference between a physician with credentials and a doctor who can establish rapport and optimize communication. I would not refer anyone to him. I researched Physician Read and his Bio looked so promising. I was looking so forward to meeting him and building a Dr./Pt. relationship.
