The almighty London tube system has really got it figured out, and it is truly easy for locals and tourists like me to get around.
London transportation was designed knowing the area was population dense and they really prioritized the design of their tube system.
As a traveler I really enjoyed and appreciated their public transportation system because I did not have to purchase a physical card. They have the Oyster card you can load and travel, for instance if you have kids and they need their own fare, but I just used Apple Pay my whole trip with their contactless payment. If you use contactless payment, remember to use the same card the whole time because London has a daily cap.
2025 Daily Cap:
Zones 1-2 £8.50
Zones 1-4 £11.60
Zones 1-6 £13.90
We used it immediately as we landed at the London Gatwick Airport and trained into central London. We definitely got our moneys worth out of their tube system and used it to get around every day. The trains generally come every 2-5 minutes in the central areas, and the waits are not too bad. Except one line where they had some operator issue and we experienced delays or alternative routes because of it for a few of the days on our trip.
Some of the trains were on the dated and worn side, and the tunnels can use major cleaning. That would be the only minor downside, but there's no easier way to get around the city.
If you are planning to travel to London, I highly recommend looking for hotels that are near a station so you can easily get around to all the attractions you wish to see. Cheers! read more
